designed to support individuals with IDD
to develop and maintain a high level of
well-being through the following:
(a) health education
(b) proper diet
(c) light exercises
(d) stress management
(e) disease prevention

• FIU Interns advised Batura’s parents of her
BMI and at-risk status and provided support
• Her parents’ adhered to the recommendations
• She along with many others have lost up to 20
pounds
• Up-to-date the program has expanded from
150 to 240 recipients in three counties

The planning Process
Data received from parents and community members via
surveys and family health forums were analyzed to determine
the health needs/priorities of the population
Aimed at creating awareness about healthy lifestyles,
improving health status and behavior change
Selected evidenced-based curricula that are tailored to
individuals with IDD
Implemented 10-Week Nutrition/Wellness Community-
Based programs with reliable pre/post tests to
measure health progress
Determined the effectiveness of the program by
capturing post data that showed an improvement
in the qualify of life of the participants

community and government levels
