Buttonhead • Low profile head diameter is twice the rivet body diameter, providing adequate bearing surface for nearly all applications • Open-end buttonhead rivets offer the broadest selection of sizes available. Large Flange • Provide greater bearing surface for fastening soft and brittle facing materials and oversize facing holes • Work well with soft materials, where the increased flange diameter protects the integrity of the application Countersunk • 120° countersunk rivets for applications where flush appearance is required • Moisture-resistant Closed-End • Up to 45% greater shear and tensile strength over equivalent open end rivets • 100% mandrel retention • Ideal for electric or electronics applications NUTS Coil Nuts: Provides temporary clamping around concert. Designed to be paired with Coil Bolts. Finished Hex Nuts: Hexagonal shaped nuts with internal screw threads. Finished hex nuts are one of the most common nuts used. Hex Jam Nuts: Low-Profile nuts that are normally half of the height of a standard nut. They are tightened against the work surface and used in situations where a standard nut would not fit. Hex Machine Nuts: Machine screw nuts are commonly used with machine screws and feature a flat top and chamfered corners. They usually have a smaller wrench size than a regular finished hex nut. Heavy Hex Nuts: Slightly larger and thicker than a standard hex nut. Because of their secure hold and durability they are usually used for large diameter and high strength bolt applications. Top Lock Nuts: Uniquely shaped threads provide a vibration resistant friction fit, so the nut stays put. These all metal locknuts withstand higher temperatures than nylon insert locknuts. Top thread section is deformed to create two or three locking zones; they start easily by hand, then must be wrenched into final position. Grade C is equivalent to Grade 8. Nylon Insert Locknuts (Nylocks): A nylon insert locknut is most frequently used to resist unwanted loosening and vibration within its application. Nylon Insert Jam Locknuts: A nylon insert jam locknut is very similar to the standard nylon insert locknut in the fact that it is most frequently used to resist unwanted loosening and vibration within its application, but is shorter than a standard nylon insert locknut. Two Way Lock (Reverse Lock) Nuts: Uniquely shaped threads provide a vibration resistant friction fit keeping the nut in place. These all metal locknuts withstand higher temperatures than nylon insert locknuts. With Reversible lock nuts, the deformed threads are in the center of the nut. Not reusable. Flange Top Lock Nuts: Same as a top lock nut but with an enlarged circular base that distributes heavy pressures equally in order to assure a secure hold. Often eliminates the need for an additional washer. Large base requires a greater amount of torque to loosen and will cover an oversized or poorly aligned hole. Serrated Flange Nuts: Enlarged circular base distributes heavy pressures equally in order to assure a secure hold. Large base requires a greater amount of torque to loosen and will cover an oversized or poorly aligned hole. Castle Nuts: Great for both general purpose fastening and for locking. Just insert a cotter pin or safety wire through the slots and the drilled hole in the fastener. Slotted Nuts: Opposing slots are cut into the end opposite the bearing surface through the centers of the flats. The slots are used for the insertion of a cotter pin or safety wire and through a drilled hole in the mating fastener. This creates a secure hold that prevents loosening or unscrewing. Hex Coupling Nuts: Designed to join two externally threaded objects, usually threaded rod, together. Cap/Acorn Nuts: Used to cover exposed threaded stud, rod, and bolt ends with a dome-like cap. This provides safety and a finished look to the exposed threaded end. K-Lock Nuts: Commonly referred to as “Keps Nuts”, these are used as a general purpose nut for moderate load assemblies. They consist of a nut assembled with a free spinning washer. The teeth pattern of the washer bite into both the nut and the base material to prevent loosening caused by vibration. Self-Clinching Nuts: Made of heat-treated steel, stainless steel, or aluminum and are designed to be installed into a pre-drilled or punched hole so the nut is flush on the back side. Generally installed in sheet metal or other thin material that is too thin for tapping threads. Spring Nuts: Available in Flat, J, U and Rectangular styles, these one-piece, self-locking nuts prevent screws from loosening during vibration. These nuts allow for fast, easy assembly and reduce the need for additional fasteners. Hex Panel (Pipe) Nuts: Panel nut is a general purpose nut used in tight areas where a thin nut is necessary. Zinc plating, retards the corrosion rate in a normal atmosphere. Cage Nuts: A square nut with a spring steel cage around it. Two wings on the spring steel cage can be compressed and released, allowing for easy installation and minor alignment adjustments during application. Tee Nuts: Internally threaded fasteners used to fasten wood, particle board, or plastic, leaving a flush surface. They have a long, thin body with a flange at one end that often have prongs or serrations. Wing Nuts: Permits frequent and rapid assembly and disassembly without the need of a tool. The wings enable the nut to be turned by hand with just finger pressure. Available in Cold Forged, Stamped, and Nylon Insert Styles. Palnuts: Featured with a large washer base that allows them to span a large or odd shaped hole. They are able to distort under load and return to their original shape because of their spring-like steel. When properly tightened, the steel can be flexible enough to provide a self-locking action. HOW TO SPECIFY LOCKBOLT RIVETS RIVET HEAD STYLES FEATURES/BENEFITS How do I measure the length of the fastener? THREAD FORMING FASTENERS - THREAD AND POINT STYLES Type A screws feature spaced threads with a gimlet point. They are typically used in thin sheet metals and wood. Type AB is similar to Type A, but with more threads per inch. This type of screw is recommended for sheet metals and wood. Type B screws feature the same threads per inch as the Type AB, but have a blunt point and incomplete starting threads. They are intended for sheet metals and wood. Self-piercing screws are used in thin sheet metals in order to avoid pre-drilling. Wood screws feature single lead threads with sharp crests, and a gimlet point. The threads can be rolled or cut at the manufacturer’s option. A self-drilling wood screw with a cutting slot in the screw tip. For use in wood when pre-drilling isn’t practical. Type F screws have machine screw diameter-pitch combinations approximating Unified Form. These have a blunt point and tapered starting threads having multiple cutting edges and chip cavities. BT or Type 25 thread cutting screws have spaced threads with a blunt point and tapererd entering threads like Type B, but with multiple cutting edges and chip cavities. They are intended for softer materials or thin sheet metals. Type T or Type 23 thread cutting screws have machine screw diameter-pitch combinations approximating Unified Form. These have a blunt point and tapered starting threads having a single cutting edge and flute for chip removal. Type 1 or Type D thread cutting screws have machine screw diameter-pitch combinations approximating Unified Form. These have a blunt point and tapered starting threads having a single cutting edge with chip cavity. Thread rolling screws have a tri-round cross section to provide relief areas when rolling internal threads. Used in metals to eliminate tapping. Metallic drive screws with multiple start threads with a large helix angle and a pilot point. Used for permanent connections in metals and plastics, installed by hammering the screw in place as opposed to threading. Self-drilling screws are used to avoid pilot hole drilling. The screw will drill its own hole and tap its own threads. The drill point must penetrate the material completely before it begins tapping threads. Typically used in sheet metal and thin steel plate. A General Point Appearance Type Description AB B Self-piercing Wood Screw 17 F BT or 25 T or 23 1 or D Tri-lobular U CSD or BSD SOCKET SET SCREW POINTS The most widely used style of set screw. It is designed for fast, permanent and semi-permanent location of parts on shafts on up to 10 to 15 HRC points of the screw hardness, where high tightening torques are impractical. Intended for permanent settings. The point should fit closely to the diameter of the drilled hole or against the flat. Often replaces dowel pins. Works well against hardened members or hollow tubing. It is the preferred style where frequent adjustments are required or where excessive indentation of the shaft is not desirable. Also used when seating against angular surface. Designed for frequent resetting or relocating on hard steel shafts and where minimal damage to shafts is necessary. Sometimes used as adjusting screw. Designed for quick and permanent location of gears, collars, pulleys or knobs on shafts. Counterclockwise locking knurls resist screw loosening. Resists most severe vibration. A set screw with a sharp conical point used for permanent setting of a machine part on hardened or soft shafts. The deep penetration it offers give this style the highest torsional and axial holding power. Cup Point General Point Appearance Type Description Half-Dog Point Oval Point Flat Point Knurled Point Cone Point Note Alloy steel socket set screws are intended for compression applications only and are not normally subjected to embrittlement tests. Their use in tensile applications would require further consideration of the alloy used and the heat treatment. Rivet Code Explanation Example: A - First Letter ........... Hex Bolt Similar to hex cap screw, hex bolts do not require a washer face or a pointed end and have a greater tolerance range in the body. Socket Head Cap Screw Socket heads feature an internal hexagonal drive socket and close tolerances for precision assembly. Button Head Socket Cap Screw Button heads feature a dome shaped head, though this feature reduces the tensile capacity. Flat Head Socket Cap Screw Flat heads feature an 82° countersunk head for flush connections. Like the button heads, this feature reduces the tensile capacity. Low Head Socket Cap Screw Low heads are similar to standard socket heads, but with a shorter head for applications where clearance is an issue. This head configuration also reduces the strength capacity. Carriage Bolt A round head bolt with a square neck under the head. These must be tightened with a nut. Plow Bolt Similar to a carriage bolt, these have a flat head to maintain a smooth surface. Typically used on plows, road graders, and similar equipment. Dome Head Plow Bolt Similar to plow bolts, but with a domed head which takes the brunt of the wear when used in plow applications. Elevator Bolt Elevator bolts feature a wide countersunk head with a shallow bearing surface and square neck. Typically used in conveyor systems. 12 Point Flange Screw Also known as a ferry cap screw, the points on the head make tightening easier on this high strength flange screw. WASHERS & TYPE A PLAIN LOW CARBON FLAT WASHER SPECIFICATION & DIMENSIONS Schnorr ® Safety Washer: These safety washers are in the form of a disc spring which is serrated on both sides and of trapezoidal cross section. Their diameters are matched to screw dimensions. The outer diameter of the washer is matched to the head diameter of pan-head and hexagon socket head cap screws. Flat Washer: Intended for the general use under the head of a bolt or nut in order to provide a smooth bearing surface and distribute the fastener load over a wider surface area. Internal/External Tooth Washer: Teeth are featured on the inner and outer diameter of the washer for maximum holding power. Fender Washer: A flat washer with a large outer diameter. These are commonly used in auto-body repair, sheet metal, plumbing, and electrical applications. External Tooth Washer: Features teeth on the outer diameter of the washer to provide additional holding power. Use them with fasteners that have heads large enough to make contacts with the washer teeth. Internal Tooth Washer: Features teeth on the inner diameter of the washer. Internal Tooth Washers work best with small screw heads. They are used to prevent snagging or scratching and where appearance warrants that the teeth be hidden. The teeth lock into the screw head or nut to prevent loosening. Split Lock Washer: Also known as spring lock washers, these split lock washers provide a positive locking action. Spring-Like take up compensates for loosening caused by slight material wear. Nord-Lock ® Washer: These washers consist of a pair of washers with a wedge-locking action, which is a unique method that uses tension instead of friction. The key is the difference in angles. Since the angle “a” is larger than the angle “b”, the pair of washers expands more than the corresponding pitch of the thread. Nord-Lock ® washers positively lock the fastener in a joint which is subjected to extreme vibration or dynamic loads. This unique bolt securing system uses tension to make the bolt- self-locking. Belleville Washer: Also known as conical washers, Belleville washers are designed to maintain tension in bolted assemblies with spring-like action. This creates a tight hold and uniform pressure that remains constant through heat and vibration that might shake standard washers loose.
