D ebbie Maijala knows how important it is to be by your loved one’s side to support them when they are in a care facility. “You want to spend as

much time as you can with them, but sometimes that can mean spending many hours at a bedside. Being comfortable is so important for everyone’s well-being.” says Debbie.

This sentiment inspired Debbie to ensure that other family members could be comfortable at their loved one’s bedside. In 2016 Debbie lead a fundraising appeal with her family and friends and asked that donations be made in her husband’s name, Bert, to purchase a comfortable chair for St. Joseph’s Care Group. While at the time Debbie had never heard of a sleep chair, she knew that she wanted to have something available to families so that they can remain close.

“It’s the peace of mind knowing you can be there with them through the night. If you could just curl up in the bed beside them—think about how much easier that would be.” Debbie says.

When the new sleep chair arrived, others within the organization immediately saw the benefits of having this simple, yet very essential, piece of furniture available. There was a growing demand to ensure that all of the families, throughout various sites, had access to these chairs as there are many families who would like to be able to remain close to their loved one while they are in care.

“Sometimes just being there is the greatest comfort, both for people receiving care and for their loved ones,” says Tracy Buckler, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Care Group. “Tbaytel saw a way to bring comfort to the community, and we are grateful for their generosity in bringing us half way to our goal of 14 sleeper chairs.” Tracy adds.

I n partnership with Tbaytel, St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay is pleased to launch their

“Sleeper Chair-ity Campaign”.

This special campaign aims to raise $25,000 to purchase 7 sleep chairs. This will be in addition to the 7 sleep chairs pledged by Tbaytel.

For any fundraising campaign to be a success, you need for others to believe in the importance of what you want to accomplish. When Tbaytel enthusiastically offered their support to the campaign, it signaled that it was an idea that the community could embrace as well.

W hen a loved one is in care there can be many reasons, and times, a family member will want to remain by the bedside. The availability of these sleep chairs ensures that families are

comfortable and supported. Being just an arms length away can make all the difference to family members.

These chairs are extraordinary pieces of equipment, made by renowned company LaZboy.

A sleep chair is more than just an ordinary chair. These specially built chairs are made of hospital grade materials, designed for comfort and durability for daily use. It is essential that they are made with materials that resist stains and germs, and are easy to clean to ensure they are hygienic. They are easy to use, as just a pull on the base handle has the entire chair unfold to a bed.

Any family member who requires to stay overnight can have the chair brought into the room, they will be provided with a pillow and linens so they can have a restful evening beside their loved one.

As these are sturdy pieces, it isn’t always easy to have them moved from floor to floor or unit to unit. That is why having so many available throughout St. Joseph’s Care Group ensures that a sleep chair will always be near by when required.

St. Joseph’s Care Group requires 14 sleep chairs.

Each of these sleep chairs costs approximately $3,500 each. The Sleeper Chair-ity Campaign hopes to raise $25,000 to purchase 7 of these sleep chairs to match the 7 chairs pledged by Tbaytel.
