Surprise Announcement From the Carsello Family

St. John Neumann Catholic High School

Dear Friends,

It is my great pleasure to greet you as the “new” principal of St. John Neumann Catholic High School. I am anxious to meet you, to learn about your community, your history, and the Celtic traditions. On behalf of the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, I wish to thank Bishop Dewane, the Diocese of Venice, and the St. John Neumann family for welcoming us to Naples.

As I read your handbook, I was thrilled to see that the legacy of the Christian Brothers has continued to impact the spirit and philosophy of St. John Neumann throughout the years, for the Salesians of St. John Bosco and the Christian Brothers of Edmund Rice both look to St. Francis de Sales for inspiration. I pray that we continue the legacy of these three great saints as “We strive to develop the uniqueness of each student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially,” in fullfillment of the SJN mission statement.

I wish to thank Dr. Denison for his years of committed service to the students and teachers of St. John Neumann. It is a consolation to know he is only a phone call away.

I am coming to you from Immaculata-La Salle High School in Miami, where I have spent the last 10 years as principal. Prior to that, I was principal in our Salesian Schools in Tampa and New Jersey. I have also taught on the junior high and high school levels. I come with the experience to know that the strength of any school abides in the contribution of all its members – parents, students, alumni, teachers, administration, and community stakeholders. As we, together, embark on this new chapter in the great history of St. John Neumann, I count on all of your help, prayers, and support. God bless you,Sr. Patricia Roche, FMA

In a surprise announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Justin Holecek Student Life Center, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carsello made a very

generous and significant gift toward the building of a new Chapel that is among the largest financial gifts ever received in St. John Neumann Catholic High School’s history. The chapel will be named the “Our Lady of the Angels Chapel” in honor of the Carsello family. The Carsello’s generous gift is a major piece of the funding needed to build the chapel, which will become Phase 3 of the successful Capital Campaign. We are humbled by their generosity to the “Reaching the Dream” Capital Campaign.“The leadership of Bishop Dewane along with the kindness and benevolence shown by the Carsello family, the Holecek Family Charitable Fund and at the start of the campaign, the Donahue Family Foundation, will transform the campus of St. John Neumann Catholic High School,” said Donna C. Heiser, Director of Development.Numerous memorial opportunities are still available for those who wish to be a part of the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel and new campus buildings. As we move into the final stage of the Capital Campaign we invite you to pledge a gift and help us to reach our goal so we can begin construction on the Chapel. Your gift, no matter what size, will make a difference. Help us to complete God’s plan for St. John Neumann.

Our Lady of the Angels Chapel

“The Chapel will be dedicated to our Blessed Lady and

the angels who walk the halls of

St. John Neumann. While they have always

had a presence here, now they

will have a permanent home.”

ACHIEVEMENT IN ACADEMICS/LEADERSHIP/CHRISTIAN SERVICE

The class of 2011, a wonderfully diverse group of young men and women, formed a special bond over their four years

together as Celtics. Their unique personalities, strong sense of individuality, and abundance of humor, was evident as they left with the confidence to succeed beyond their dreams. We celebrate each graduate and were honored to have been a part of their lives. We look forward to welcoming them back to campus as alumni as they continue on their path to success.

ST. JOHN NEUMANN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES $4 MILLION GIFT IN MEMORY OF JUSTIN HOLECEK, A 1997 GRADUATE

What began four years ago as a dream by a group of St. John Neumann parents to build a new campus is now

becoming a reality. On February 15, 2011, before a crowd of more than 300 clergy, students, faculty, parents and alumni, Bishop Frank Dewane led a prayer service that was followed by a special surprise announcement. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Holecek made a $4 million donation to St. John Neumann in memory of their son, Justin Holecek, a 1997 graduate. As trustees of the Holecek Family Trust, the couple decided to make the challenge gift pledge to the “Reaching the Dream” Capital Campaign for the creation of the Justin Holecek Student Life Center. “Justin loved St. John Neumann and he loved the very good friends that he made here,” said Bruce Holecek “It is our hope and prayer that the Justin

Holecek Student Life Center will be a living memorial to our son, Justin, and that it will live and serve long into the future. There is no greater legacy, there is no more appropriate legacy that

Justin can leave behind at St. John Neumann than this.” “The Holecek Family Charitable Fund donation is the single largest gift in Neumann’s history and will be used as part of a matching gift program to encourage others to contribute to the campaign,” said Donna Heiser, Director of Development. For more information, or to pledge a gift to the “Reaching the Dream” Capital Campaign for St. John Neumann, contact Mrs. Heiser

at 239-455-3044, ext. 225, or e-mail her at [email protected].

We’re Reaching the Dream...

Consider a Legacy Gift to St. John Neumann in Your WillAdding a gift to St. John Neumann in your will or retirement plan is a simple act with impressive results. Bequests to your will or retirement plan afford you the opportunity to give a gift to St. John Neumann Catholic High School that will fund what is important to you. Perhaps an Endowed Fund in your name for Scholar-

ships or Tuition Assistance? Or an Endowed Fund to benefit the Arts or Science program at St. John Neumann. It is easy to add a charitable gift to St. John Neumann in your will with just a phone call to your lawyer. We welcome gifts of any size. You can name a specific dollar amount in your will or also arrange to leave a percentage of your estate’s

value, or the residual of your estate after oth-er gifts are made. In addition, gifts need not be cash. Life insurance policies, retirement plans, stocks, bonds or certificates of deposit are a few of many options available. For more information, contact Donna Heiser, Director of Development at (239) 455-3044 ext. 225.

On April 15, 2011, a large crowd again gathered at St. John Neumann Catholic High School for a groundbreaking

ceremony to officially begin the Justin Holecek Student Life Center. The groundbreaking event celebrated the success of the “Reaching the Dream” Capital Campaign that has raised more than $9 million toward the school’s master campus plan and will double the campus footprint. In addition to statements made by Bishop Dewane and contributors to the Capital Campaign, a time capsule created by the students was placed at the building site. Scheduled for completion in the fall of 2012, the Justin Holecek Student Life Center will be a 20,000 -square -foot multi-purpose dining, state-of-the-art assembly and performing arts facility. ST. JOHN NEUMANN HONORS YOUFor the second year, the school has inducted a new member into the St. John Neumann Catholic High School Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is our way of honoring educators, athletes, teams, coaches, and individu-als who made significant contributions to the school and the Neumann tradition of excellence.

This year we are honored to name Mr. Jeff Alty, as our second inductee into the St. John Neumann Catholic High School Hall of Fame. Last year’s inductee was Mr. Tony Grasso.

St. John Neumann has a long-standing tradition of presenting the “Blessed Edmund Rice Distinguished Educator Award” to a worthy teacher each year. Its purpose is to recognize a Neumann teacher who typifies the qualities and virtues of Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers. Among these virtues are a display of love for students; a model to students in their moral and spiritual life; one who builds community among the faculty and staff.

This year, the school was honored to award the Blessed Edmund Rice Award to Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett.

This year at the graduation ceremony for the class of 2011, the school was pleased to recognize the Ocana Family for their years of dedication and service to Catholic education. All four of their children are proud graduates of St. John Neumann Catholic High School.

Andrew Gingras ‘10: I just finished my freshman year at Florida State University. It was a difficult year to say the least. The transition from high school to college was a lot tougher than I had anticipated. However, my St. John Neumann education allowed me to adapt quickly to my new environment. I am currently studying business and marketing, as well as working on getting a graduate certificate in entrepreneurship. I am a member of the Seminole Booster Club as well as part of the Civitan Community Service Organization.

Frankie Gannon ‘10: After finishing my freshman year at Flagler College, I have decided to transfer to Florida State University in the fall. I am excited to be attending a larger school with hopefully more opportunities, and to continue my major in psychology.

Natasha Lai ‘10: After graduating from SJN in 2010, I started college in the fall at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Transitioning from a school size of approximately 200, to a school of over 50,000 students seemed intimidating, but it surprisingly took only a couple weeks to adjust. I admit, academically, my first semester of college was rough. If there’s one thing that first semester taught me, however, it was that if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it because there’s surprisingly a lot of people willing to help you. In terms of extracurricular activities, I was a little shy the first semester and didn’t get as involved as I wanted to. Fortunately, I learned and made some changes second semester. I got recruited for soccer intramurals by girls I met in my dorm, and also started basketball intramurals with a friend from high school; both were tons of fun. I also joined a student organization, After School Gators, which is a mentoring program for elementary school children, and recently became the secretary for the organization in addition to being a mentor. Second semester was also when I started having fun: I went to basketball games, baseball games, track meets, went out with friends, etc. More importantly, I started taking advantage of all the opportunities for free entertainment offered to me as a student: watching movies for free, hearing Kal Penn speak at the student union, seeing Pretty Lights and Dane Cook perform, and much more. Overall, my first year of college was great. I met a lot of new people, many of which I still keep in touch with, and ended up being really close with my roommate who I ended up with by random selection. What I loved the most, however, is that even with the distance I stayed close with my best friends from high school. We all got our own set of new friends, but high school memories keep us together. I dreaded leaving the home I’ve lived in for all of my life this time last summer; now, I can’t wait to go back to Gainesville to see all of my new friends again, but never forgetting about the old.

Sarah McFee ‘10: After graduating from St. John Neumann, I began college at Florida State University where I am studying nursing. My first year was great, although living with a new roommate was a huge transition! I am really looking forward to next year when I will be living off campus with my cousin Frankie Gannon.

Madison Philbrick ‘10: After graduating from SJN in 2010 I went to the University of South Florida. I never thought that I would be so comfortable with such a big school, but I had the time of my life. I went to football games, basketball games, and several school events. We even had free concerts. It was not always fun and games. While going to class, I had my first job working at the Campus Recreation (a.k.a. the gym). I met some amazing people and made such good friendships with the people on my floor and building. Though I had a great year, it was also very rough. Early in my first semester, I was in a car accident where my car was flipped. I am so very thankful my passenger and I were wearing our seatbelts because they saved our lives. I also got sick a lot. I usually never get sick but living in a dorm with different people and in a new environment my body went crazy! With all the ups and downs, I would not trade my first year in college for anything. It was a learning experience and I loved every minute of it!

Garrett Braun ‘10: After completing his freshman year at the University of Florida, Garrett just received his Congressional Appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Way to go Garrett!
