Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4
Pastor’s Column Fr. Thomas Keller
Changing of the Guard When I became a pastor for the first time at St. Angela Merici in Florissant, I realized how important the Knights of Columbus are to a parish. The Knights of Columbus is an international men’s organization organized into local councils that perform good works and provide Catholic men an experience of fraternity. Sometimes the Knights are characterized by the flamboyant Fourth Degree uniforms with their feathered hats, colored capes and ceremonial swords, or they are stereotyped as the guys who run the beer booth at the parish picnic (for the record, here at Assumption it’s the Athletic Association guys who run the beer booth). But in reality, the Knights of Columbus are Catholic men of any age who meet regularly to pray, quietly raise money and distribute it to a multitude of educational and charitable organizations, and to provide support to each other. The Knights were founded by Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney so Catholic men could support each other and the Church, as well as support the families of deceased members. At the time, widows and orphans needed support, so the Knights developed into a world-class insurance organization. The Fr. Griffin Council is made up of Assumption, Seven Holy Founders and Our Lady of Providence parishes. Men from all three parishes form the leadership and ranks of the council. All three parishes and the school that serve them benefit from the charitable work of the council. This week the Grand Knight (that’s the chairperson) and other newly elected officers of the council were invested in their new roles. Stepping down as Grand Knight is Assumption parishioner, Tim Hessel. Tim attends daily Mass at 6:30 a.m., he is also involved in Assumption’s ProLife activities, ACTS Retreats and is a ready volunteer when we have maintenance projects. During Tim’s time as Grand Knight, many new members from Assumption and the other parishes joined the Knights of Columbus council and they expanded their support to the three parishes and other charitable organizations. The new Grand Knight is also an Assumption parishioner, Stan Buncher. Stan is also a daily Mass goer, usually at 8 a.m. Mass, and he is involved in ACTS Retreats, helps with our maintenance projects and participates in other Assumption activities. Our prayers are with Stan and all the Knights as they continue their good works. I highly recommend Assumption men of any age to consider the Knights of Columbus. The benefits for the men and their families makes membership worthwhile, but also because of all the good that they do beyond the family, in our parishes and the larger Church.
God bless, Fr. Keller

Let’s Get Together - Gathering in the Courtyard: Our next ASM gathering will take place this Thursday, July 23, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Courtyard behind the School Building, which is completely shaded by the building at that time of day. Bring your lawn chair, bug spray, and a beverage in your own personal container. The Parish Center will be open for use of the restrooms. If you need to access the restroom, you must wear a facemask in order to enter the building. Assumption Rummage Sale Collection Days: If you have material donations for the Rummage Sale, please bring your items to the Parish Center where a dedicated volunteer will offer contactless unloading of your vehicle at the entrance. Drop Off days and times are: Wednesday, August 5, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 6, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon Safe Environment Program - Prevent and Protect: Some of you may know that the Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new system for safe environ- ment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone volunteering with Assumption Senior Ministry is required to register in the new system. This includes all volunteers who are currently in compliance and those new to service. We are getting our list updated anticipating future events. Only new registrants will need to attend a Protecting God’s Children workshop in person or watch a live-streamed workshop. For those who have already attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system. In addition, everyone will register for an updated background screening, view two online training modules on abuse reporting and agree to the updated Code of Ethical Conduct. All information and links can be found at www.assumptionstl.org/safe-environment. If you have any questions, please contact Diane Higgins at [email protected]. Thank you for helping us get this compliance updated for when we do resume activities!

Help Save Our Beloved Statue of St. Louis
The statue of Saint Louis IX on Art Hill in Forest Park is under threat of being taken down. Radical activists are
circulating a petition to Mayor Lyda Krewson to take down the historic statue and change the name of our city.
In response to this, many Catholics are gathering daily at 6:30 p.m. to pray the rosary at the foot of the statue in
Forest Park (on Art Hill). All are welcome to come and pray with this group! Also, you can write or call the mayor’s of-
fice (314-622-3201) and request that the statue not be taken down and that the name of our city not be changed. We also
have a link posted at www.assumptionstl.org of an online petition that petitions our mayor to keep the statue and
name of our city. If you have any questions, contact Tim Hessel at 314-807-0510.
