Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Readings: Jeremiah 23:1-6 — Ephesians 2:13-18 — Mark 6:30-34) Moved with Pity — The word “shepherd” in Church usage refers to priests, and Jeremiah’s “Woe to the

shepherds” text may well make us think of the scandals continuing to rock the Church. But in the Old Testament, it was the rulers who were called shepherds, and it is they whom Jeremiah condemns. God

promises his sheep that he will “appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them,” and give them a king “who will reign and govern wisely.” We can easily see this prophecy fulfilled in Jesus, whose “heart was

moved with pity for the crowd.” Many centuries later, a Beautiful Lady’s heart was moved with pity for her people. And, like Jesus, she “taught them many things.” St. Paul writes, “In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.” Our Lady of La Salette sorrowfully reverses this saying in her message. Her people, who once had become near, were now far off from her Son. Simply by speaking of

her Son, who “is our peace,” she “preached peace” as he did. Just as St. Paul cannot seem to find enough ways to say how Jesus brought reconciliation to Jewish and Gentile Christians alike, so Mary finds abundant

ways to describe how her people need that reconciliation. She also shows how they might encounter it, namely by honoring the Lord’s Name, respecting the Lord’s Day, turning to him in prayer, participating in the

Eucharist. All of these, and more, are expressions of the trust expressed in today’s Psalm. The God who spreads a table before us is the same God who saw Maximin’s anxious father give him a piece of bread. This is the compassionate God whose goodness and kindness follow us all the days of our life. Those who respond

to Mary’s message, Instead of suffering famine, shall not want. Instead of being like sheep without a shepherd, they will walk in right paths, their souls will be refreshed, they will fear no evil. This is not a

dream. It is a prophetic vision. Pity is not just a feeling. It leads to action. Jesus taught the people looking to him for hope. Mary came to renew that hope. Look around you. Whom do you pity? How will you act?

Participa en la Misa por la solemnidad de la Asunción de la

Santísima Virgen María, 15 de agosto

El Obispo Noonan invita a todos los fieles a la celebración de la Misa por

la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, miércoles 15

de agosto a partir de las 12:10 p.m. en St. James Cathedral (215 N. Orange Ave. en Or-

Movidos por la Compasión 16to Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Jer 23:1-6; Efesios 2:13-18; Marcos 6:30-34

La palabra “pastor” en el lenguaje de la Iglesia se refiere

a los sacerdotes, y el texto de Jeremías, ¡Ay de los pastores” podría bien hacernos pensar en los escándalos que continua-mente golpean a la Iglesia. Pero en el Antiguo Testamento, era a los que regían a quienes se les llamaba pastores, y es a ellos a quien Jeremías condena.

Dios promete a sus ovejas que, “Les pondrá pastores para que las pastoreen” y les dará un rey “que reinará y gober-nara con sabiduría”. Podemos fácilmente ver esta profecía cumplirse en Jesús, de quien “su corazón se llenó de com-pasión al ver a la multitud”

Muchos siglos más tarde, el corazón de una Bella Seño-ra fue movido por la compasión por su pueblo. Y como Jesús, ella “les enseñó muchas cosas”

San Pablo escribe, “Ahora, por la sangre de Cristo, están cerca los que antes estaban lejos”. Nuestra Señora de La Salette con mucha tristeza revierte esta afirmación en su mensaje. Su pueb-lo, que antes estaba cerca, está ahora alejado de su Hijo.

Simplemente al hablar de su Hijo, el que “es nuestra paz”, ella “predicó la paz” como él lo hizo. Igual que San Pablo parece no poder encontrar suficientes maneras para decir cómo Jesús trajo la reconciliación tanto a los judíos como a los cristianos gentiles, lo mismo María, encuentra abundantes modos para describir cómo su pueblo necesita aquella reconciliación. Ella también muestra la manera en que su pueblo puede encontrarla, es decir por medio de honrar el nombre del Señor, respetas el Santo Día del Señor, volver a él en oración, participar de la Eucaristía.

Todo esto y más, son expresiones de una confianza que se expresa en el Salmo de hoy. El Dios que pone su mesa delante de nosotros es el mismo Dios que vio la ansiedad del padre de Maximino cuando le daba un pedazo de pan. Este es el Dios compasivo, su bondad y su ternura están con nosotros todos los días de nuestra vida.

Aquellos que responden al mensaje de María, en lugar de pasar hambre, no tendrán caren-cias. En lugar de andar como ovejas sin un pastor, caminarán por la senda del bien, sus almas tendrán alivio, no temerán al mal. Esto no es un sueño. Es una visión profética.

La compasión no es solo un sentimiento. Nos lleva a la acción. Jesús enseñó a su pueblo a buscarlo con esperanza. María vino a renovar esa esperanza. Mira a tu alrededor. ¿De quién de apiadas? ¿Cómo vas a actuar?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Desde el Concilio Vaticano II la Iglesia, como Pueblo de Dios, ha tomado la imagen de una peregrinación para definir su presencia en este mundo. Para los hispanos la peregrinación más antigua es la de Santiago de Compostela en España cuya fiesta celebramos esta semana. Según la tradición, Santiago Apóstol evangelizó España y después de su muerte su cadáver fue llevado a Galicia por acontecimientos milagrosos. En el siglo VII seña-les de estrellas llevaron al descubrimiento del lugar de su entierro y se construyó un santuario con el nombre de Campo de Estrellas. Eventualmente, a finales del primer milenio cristiano, empezaron las famosas peregrinaciones a Santiago. Después de muchos siglos la mejor manera de llegar a Santiago todavía es a pie. Recorrer el camino de Santiago es caminar sobre las huellas de innumerables pere-grinos que durante más de mil años han ido trazando el sendero. Peregrinar es caminar
