Not only did the waters of the Red Sea part to the right and to the left for her people as they walked on the sea floor. What is more, her family, her friends…not one life had been lost in all the camp. Even her feet, her clothes, were dry! So yes, she had a spring in her step and a smile on her face! But that smile reveals wrinkles and scars of a woman who had been through so much. Less than a day ago her people were pinned against the sea by the Egyptians. Perhaps in that moment she encouraged others: “Let us wait to see what will happen.” Already as a young woman she learned the value of waiting to see what would happen. Can you endure the day-to-day grind of people, culture, the world treating you as a good- for-nothing slave of your foolish Bible, cross, and Savior? When the going gets rough, can you still see the smiling face of God in his Word and sacrament promising that nothing can separate you from the love of Christ? What if you can’t do those things? What if it’s too much? Well, even then, the Lord will fight for you. That’s something we learn in the history of God’s people. They break; they’re weak; they grumble. Yet God remained faithful. God saved them, and God saves you, too. “God sent his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Miriam saw her baby brother rescued from the post-birth abortion mandate. Miriam survived slavery. Miriam lived to see the other side of the Red Sea. As your decades pile up, will you see that God has stepped up to deliver on his promises? Will you look each day at your hands and feet and see that they are not covered in guilt, but are washed clean of sin’s curse? Will you step into the day’s challenge knowing that Jesus crushed the devil’s head, and his army is toothless, caged, and left to drown in the waters of your baptism? Yes! Miriam’s song is...Moses’ song, is Israel’s song, is your song, and is my song! Much of a Christian’s life is waiting to see what will happen through the eyes of faith. But may our lives also be a life of singing Miriam’s song, and dancing her dance, and beating her drum. Our God is exalted. Our God is victorious. Our Jesus lives. OCTOBER 2018 — VOLUME 30, ISSUE 10

OUR MISSION IS TO GLORIFY GOD, GROW IN GOD’S WORD, AND GO WITH THE WORD INTO THE WORLD

Monthly News and Notes is the monthly newsletter of Eternal Love Lutheran Church, 1011 E. Midway Rd., Appleton, WI 54915.

She was no spring chicken, but this lady still had spring in her step. We find her dancing, singing and drumming out a

rhythm with other Israelite women in procession. They are echoing the beginning of Moses’ hymn. “Sing to the Lord, for he is

highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.” (Exodus 15:21) Not only had the Egyptian army been de-

feated. Not only had the LORD fought for them. Not only did the waters of the Red Sea part to the right and to the left for her

people as they walked on the sea floor. What is more, her family, her friends…not one life had been lost in all the camp. Even

her feet, her clothes, were dry! So yes, she had a spring in her step and a smile on her face!

But that smile reveals wrinkles and scars of a woman who had been through so much. Less than a day ago her people were

pinned against the sea by the Egyptians. Perhaps in that moment she encouraged others: “Let us wait to see what will happen.”

Already as a young woman she learned the value of waiting to see what would happen. That was just life as usual for a na-

tion of slaves within a nation of slave masters. What would each day bring? Moody, temperamental slave drivers? Perhaps a day

of rest soon? An impossible quota of demanded bricks raised yet again?

One such incident from her childhood must have stood out in her memory. It was the time her dad doctored up a piece of

scrap papyrus with a little tar and pitch and next thing you know, her little brother was given a picnic-basket life boat, custom-

designed for a 3 month old. In went the precious cargo. The Bible tells us Miriam would wait and see what would happen. Do

you know what happened? Miriam watched as the princess of Egypt rescued her brother, gave him a name and paid her mom to

nurse him! How the Lord provides!

Miriam sang this song of praise on the other side of the Red Sea with her many decades of life contributing to her joy. How

blessed are we to share in Miriam’s story?! How many decades have you been on this earth? 3? 4? 7? The wrinkles and scars

you are developing are the beginning of a complete chronicle of your waiting and God delivering.

But can you put your family, people and causes you most love, into a little boat called “prayer” and push them out into

God’s care, trusting him to provide? Can you endure the day-to-day grind of people, culture, the world treating you as a good-

for-nothing slave of your foolish Bible, cross, and Savior? When the going gets rough, can you still see the smiling face of God

in his Word and sacrament promising that nothing can separate you from the love of Christ? What if you can’t do those things?

What if it’s too much? Well, even then, the Lord will fight for you. That’s something we learn in the history of God’s people.

They break; they’re weak; they grumble. Yet God remained faithful. God kept his promises. God saved them, and God saves

you, too. “God sent his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Miriam saw her baby brother rescued from the post-birth abortion mandate. Miriam survived slavery. Miriam lived to see

the other side of the Red Sea. As your decades pile up, will you see that God has stepped up to deliver on his promises? Will you

look each day at your hands and feet and see that they are not covered in guilt, but are washed clean of sin’s curse? Will you step

into the day’s challenge knowing that Jesus crushed the devil’s head, and his army is toothless, caged, and left to drown in the

waters of your baptism? Yes! Miriam’s song is...Moses’ song, is Israel’s song, is your song, and is my song!

Much of a Christian’s life is waiting to see what will happen through the eyes of faith. But may our lives also be a life of

singing Miriam’s song, and dancing her dance, and beating her drum. Our God is exalted. Our God is victorious. Our Jesus

lives. Adapted from a chapel devotion delivered by Pastor Backus at FVL Sept. 27.

Fall Sermon Series:

Family Values Pastor Pries

Our Fall sermon series, called “Family Values”,

continues through October. We will close out the season of

Pentecost focusing in on the Gospel of Mark, seeing how

our family values line up with Jesus’ values. October 7 – Our family celebrates marriage as Christ

designed it.

October 14—Our family gets our priorities straight.

October 21—WELS Mission & Ministry—Our

family’s mission is to bring Salvation to the ends of the

Earth.

October 23—Our family follows Jesus.

Why Do We Need More Bible

Class Space? Pastor Balza, Funding Committee Chairman Our mission states that we exist to grow in God’s

Word. God’s holy Word, the Bible, is our precious gift from

God, and through it we learn the way of salvation. As Christians, learning the Bible is a lifetime task and privilege.

And since the very beginning, adult Bible classes have been a

critical part of our church’s ministry.

Before we had our first church building, we held

adult Bible classes every Sunday in a corner of the cafeteria at

Horizons school. Nearly all of our members attended those

classes.

We also had at least one midweek Bible study

offering every week, even during those early years. Since we

did not have a church building to hold midweek classes, we

met in the homes of our members and friends. A majority of

our members faithfully attended one of those small group

Bible studies.

This faithful use of God’s Word made a big

difference in our own lives, and in the spiritual growth of our

congregation members. There was a strong sense of unity and

family, and a strong desire to share the good news with our

community. God’s Word was blessing us.

Since our first building was constructed in 1993, we

have, by default, been holding Sunday Bible classes in the

chapel. This large room provides plenty of space for those

attending, and the presence of a digital projection system has

helped immensely. However, there are still some inadequacies

with using the chapel as our classroom.

It can be hard to hear each other. It’s a large room,

and we are spread out. It is hard to hear participants’

comments and responses to questions. It is difficult to arrange

chairs to sit in a circle for small group break-outs. Taking

notes is difficult because there is no writing surface other than

the back of a hymnal.

Midweek Bible classes are typically held in the

fellowship hall in the area near the digital projector. This is a

pleasant space and easy to control the temperature. However,

because this space is used for many different classes and

activities, we are constantly arranging and re-arranging tables

and chairs for the various classes and meetings in this room.

And because the folding chairs provide minimal seating

comfort, we often haul padded chairs in from the chapel to use

in the classroom. It’s strange that we have been using this

make-shift system for so many years for something so

important and critical to a Christian congregation as Bible

study. It is somewhat amazing that we have no dedicated

space for this activity. We clearly need more space to grow in

God’s Word, and we hope to address this long-term need with

this expansion.

And when we do have the new space, will we use it?

On our building dedication day, we must also re-dedicate

ourselves to one of the three reasons for our existence as a

congregation – to grow in God’s Word.

But there is no need to wait a year to do that. Check

out the current menu of adult Bible study offerings and take

advantage of them “so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good

work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened

with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful

thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of

light.” (Colossians 1:10–11)

To the Ends of the Earth Pastor Backus

Everyone has a story. Usually the topic of their story is

what they are most passionate about. It could be an event,

an achievement, or the direction their life has taken. On

Sunday mornings beginning Oct. 14, we will begin an

adult Bible study series about the stories of the people

portrayed in the movie To the Ends of the Earth, based on

the book of Acts.

We will look at the accounts of:

Paul – Oct. 14, 21

Lydia – Oct. 28

Slave girl – Nov. 4

Jailer – Nov. 11

Philippian Christians – Nov. 18

On October 7, we will be handing out copies of the

film as a gift for your family. We hope you’ll take the

opportunity to watch the film on your own. The aim of this

class will be to examine our own stories and be

rejuvenated in our mission to share Jesus.

New Wednesday Evening

Bible Study Pastor Pries

Our Wednesday Evening Bible Class will study

the topic of Angels. This study begins October 17 and will

continue through November 14. We will consider their

creation and appearance, their ranks, their position as

guardians, their purpose in death and judgment, and finally

we will spend time considering The Angel of the Lord.

Big, Free Christian Library Pastor Backus

Please think of the books in our church library as

yours. They are there to serve you in your walk of faith.

Some are practical resources for you to serve you

devotionally, others provide insights on social issues or

things we may wrestle with as individuals, parents, etc.

You are welcome to come check out a book during office

hours or on a Sunday morning.

Is there a solid resource that we’re missing and you

wish we could make available in our library? Bring your

suggestion to Pastor Backus. He’s looking to update our

resources, a few books at a time. Thank you for your

support of our big, free library and for making use of it as

it best suits you.

If you’ve borrowed a resource and are finished with

it, please remember to return it so that it can be shelved for

others to benefit from.

Property for Sale Pastor Dave Pries

Karen Jakubek is our neighbor on Plank Road who

owns the land just east of our property. She came to us

and initiated a conversation about selling her property to

us. She has 3.23 acres which stretches from Midway road

to Plank Road (The entire East boundary of our

property). See the screen shot of the Calumet County GIS

map and the property to our East (right).

Here are some details of her property:

The lot is in the City of Menasha.

Her home parcel is in the Village of Harrison, we are

in the city of Appleton – talk about confusing

boundary lines.

The north end of her lot along Midway Rd is full of

beautiful mature trees. She currently has some trails

cut through that part of her land.

The middle area also has some nice trees and opens up

a bit more.

Developers have been making offers for the land. One

wanted to develop it into lots for homes. Another

wants to put storage units on it.

Her parents originally owned

this land and the land our

church now sits on.

Karen expressed an interest to

see the land put to use for

ministry purposes as opposed

to storage units.

We have not talked about a

price at this point. We are doing

some research into the value of the

land. We know that for property

tax purposes, the land is valued in

the $60,000 area. It’s most likely

worth more than that to a

developer, maybe over $100,000.

The timing of her interest

in selling this land is interesting.

She came to us right after we made

our final approval for moving

forward with our building

expansion project. Eternal Love

has approached her in the past to

see if she would sell her land to us.

At those times, she was not in

agreement to do so. As we were

planning this project, we never considered owning more

land. But sometimes God does that. We make our plans

and he comes along with another idea.

Our council has no plans to stop the progress of

our building expansion as we research this property next to

us. But the possibility of owning this land has opened up

some new possibilities in future ministry. Some churches

have created assisted living facilities which allows them to

serve people in the later years of their life. Many churches

build day care facilities for reaching families who are just

starting to have children. Pastor Mark Henke from

Bethany—Our Shepherd Child Care (on Lynndale Dr in

Grand Chute) shared with us the blessings of having new

families connecting with his church for 5 to 10 years

depending on how many kids they have. When you only

have a preschool, then you connect with families for 2—5

years. Bethany continues to see blessings and growth with

Our Shepherd Child Care.

So what do we do now? Please give this land

some thought. As with everything we do, bring this topic

to the Lord in prayer. These opportunities only come up

once or twice in the life of a congregation. Once we are

landlocked, then we are landlocked. God is not making

any more land. Please talk to members of the council

about this. Share your

thoughts and ideas. If we

tell her that we are not

interested in buying this lot,

we will continue to do

gospel ministry on the

property we own. But what

if we had three more acres to

build on? Even if we sat on

it for now, maybe our Lord

will direct us in 10 years to

use it for something we

never even thought of now.

Fall Harvest Festival Chad Janke, Outreach Director & Pastor Backus

Our Outreach Ministry is hosting a Fall Harvest

Festival on Saturday, October 20, from 2-5pm at Eternal

Love.

This event is designed to welcome families from our

community as our guests, kind of like a block party. Last

year, we had over 200 attend our festival and are looking

forward to continued growth!

We have many fun volunteer opportunities, and would

love your help and smiles! Make sure to check the sign up

list in the entryway of church. Let’s share Eternal Love’s

joy and friendship with our neighbors and community!

If you are unable to volunteer, we still need your help!

Please continue to pray for this event. Our Outreach team

and all the volunteers will need your support as we plan

and execute all the fun areas of the event.

We also hope you can attend as a family and bring a

friend—maybe a friend who doesn’t have a church home.

Finally, for those of you who are here that day, it is a

day where we focus not so much on one another as on

meeting and getting to know any guests who might be here.

It’s the time of year for harvest; and we know that as a

church, Christ loves us doing the spiritual version of that

through kindness, friendship, and inviting more souls to

hear the gospel preached at this place.

For more information or if you have any questions,

please contact Chad Janke at [email protected].

CHAIN Reaction Day Chad Janke, Outreach Director & Pastor Backus

This year Outreach is looking to give back and

share our love through a community volunteer event. Our

Outreach board has chosen Outagamie County Volunteer

Service’s bi-annual CHAIN Reaction Day on Saturday,

October 27th.

CHAIN Reaction Day (Communities Helping

Adults In their Neighborhood) is a volunteer driven project

to assist older persons in Outagamie County with raking.

You can volunteer as a team group, family group or

individually. We will be putting volunteer teams together

of 4-6 people. Servicing each home usually takes 30-40

minutes, so we will ask for approximately 2-3 hours of

work to be assigned to our Eternal Love groups. For our

student members, this is a great way to get volunteer hours

to build up that impressive college resume. Please sign-up

on the list in the entryway by Sunday, September 30th!

Any questions, contact Chad Janke at

[email protected].

that many of the new costs associated with a home can be

covered by these member gifts!

Thank You! Pastor Backus

What a showering of God’s love you gave us! Greta and I

thank God that he has blessed us this summer with the

ability to close on a home. Our thanks to God recently

compounded as we received the generous tagboard full of

thoughtful, generous gifts from you, our church family!

What a practical, helpful showering of love. We thank

God for you.

Borrowing Church Property If you would like to borrow church equipment, please

check first with the church office to make sure the

equipment is available. The church staff will check the

events calendar and reply ASAP about availability. Please

allow as much time as possible prior to the date you would

like to borrow an item. We’d like to stress the importance

of not taking items without reserving them first. Not only

might this leave us short of equipment for a scheduled

function, it also might mean someone who has reserved the

equipment would not have it available when they need it.

At the moment, we are using most of our tables for

Sunday School and other classes. In order to make sure our

teachers have the opportunity to arrange their classrooms

before Sunday if they wish, we will only have a couple of

tables to loan out on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

With more and more activities in the church, it is

important that we all adhere to these guidelines. Thank you

for your cooperation.

Fall Clean-up Day Dave Huebner

Saturday, October 13, 8:00am-noon Our annual fall clean up/church work day is coming up

on Saturday, October 13, from 8:00am until 12:00pm.

Everyone in the congregation is encouraged to participate

in cleaning the church interior and taking care of seasonal

cleaning chores.

Weather permitting, we will try to take care of a

number of outdoor projects. It’s a lot to do in just a few

morning hours, but if we are well organized and have a

good turnout from many members, much will be

accomplished. Can we plan on you?

Can you bring the following: shovels, wheelbarrows,

pruning tools, pruning hedgers, rakes, leaf blowers, strong

muscles, and work gloves.

As we shoulder the work of upkeeping of the Lord’s

house and property together, we can be reminded of the

blessing it is as we aim to be a welcoming light to our

community here. It is good to work together. Let’s do it!

The plan is to work rain or shine to beautify the Lord’s

house.

In case of rain on October 13, we will still do the

indoor chores and will set a rain date for the outdoor work.

Book Club Steve Schultz

Join our Eternal Love Book Club on

Tuesday, October 9 at 6:30pm. We will be discussing a

book chosen by the city of Appleton for its annual book for

the community to read. It received great reviews from our

community! This will be the 99th book read by our

club. The book is Salt to the Sea by Ruta

Sepetys. Kirsten Krowas will lead the discussion and

Colleen Oldenburg will provide snacks.

Here is a brief review:

Sepetys describes an almost unknown maritime

disaster whose nearly 9,000 casualties dwarfed those of

both the Titanic and the Lusitania. Told alternately from

the perspective of each of the main characters, the novel

also highlights the struggle and sacrifices that ordinary

people—children—were forced to make. At once beautiful

and heart-wrenching, this title will remind readers that

there are far more casualties of war than are recorded in

history books.

Book Club Celebrates

Milestone! Steve Schultz

We are busy preparing for our December Book

Club. Why? It will be the 100th book that we will

read! Can you imagine when our book club started back in

2001 that we would reach this milestone? We are going to

invite our spinoff book club members to join us for this

special celebration. We have inspired 4 other

congregations to start similar book clubs in the Appleton

area and in Florida and Alaska. Do you have an idea for

what our 100th book should be? If so, send me an email

at [email protected]

Women’s Ministry Karen McVey

Many ideas were discussed at the planning meeting:

• First, mark your calendar for December 1st for Advent

by Candlelight. There will be a planning meeting on

Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30pm.

• We are also going to be asking for donations of $10

gift cards for the Sunday School teachers, plus gift

cards that we plan to send to our college kids later in

the year. And we will be collecting candy for the

Sunday School kid’s Christmas bags. If you are

interested in purchasing SCRIP to support FVL’s

Building Project, please reach out to Judy Hildeman.

• And this summer, Steve Schultz will offer our ladies a

class to make a cement leaf. The exact date will be

determined later, but it will be probably June or July

when the leaves are in their prime.

These are just some of the plans for things to share among

our sisters in Christ. We invite you to join in the fun.

Dartball Cassie Payne

month of play in September. You are welcome to join us

Sunday, October 14 at 7pm as we visit Mt. Olive on the

October 28 at 7pm versus Mt. Olive. Plan on arriving by

6:45pm, so we can set up the Fellowship Hall to welcome

the visiting team. Dartball questions? Contact Cassie Payne

(920-850-3910 call/text).
