Danville Senior Citizens Provide the Town with Valuable Input Through Survey

This past summer, the Town surveyed Danville senior citizens to gauge interest and priorities related to the opening of the new Veterans Memorial Building and Senior Center. The Town mailed approximately 7,000 surveys and 670 were returned by the June deadline. Survey questions focused on likely participation, parking demands, preferred communication methods, barriers to participation and potential membership fees. Results of the survey were compiled and presented at the Senior Issues Sub-committee in July.

The responses to this survey were similar to that of the 2007 Senior Needs Assessment with the highest rated activities being entertainment, fitness activities, educational classes, organized day trips and arts and crafts. In addition, over 50% of respondents plan on utilizing the new Senior Center up to three days per week.

Respondents overwhelmingly identified cost and parking as a barrier. Approximately 90% of participants drive themselves to Town senior programs and 87.5% of participants are typically parked for less than 4 hours. At the October 26 meeting of the Senior Issues Sub-committee, the Town will discuss options to deal with the parking demand of senior programs at the new Veterans Memorial Building.

While it is often assumed that Danville senior citizens are members of neighboring Senior Centers, according to the input received only 12% are members of a neighboring Senior Center. The Town appreciates the effort of many to return their surveys and provide valuable input into the future programming of the Town’s Senior Center. Information gleaned from the survey respondents will be utilized to plan and schedule programs at the new Senior Center. Buzz Sessions & Local Spotlight

Local Spotlight: Lou and Sandra Biancaniello

Lou and Sandra Biancaniello, also known by their friends as “the sidewalk inspectors” because of their suggestions for further beautification of Danville, can be spotted almost daily walking to their favorite haunts in town.

Lou is a retired civil engineer from New York City. Among his many accomplishments is his work on the construction of the World Trade Center. Sandra, from Pasadena, his bride of 33 years, has traveled the world as a flight attendant and in-flight supervisor during her employment of 28 years with Pan Am. One of her career highlights was training flight attendants in Africa. Among her famous passengers were Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe, Charles Lindbergh and Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, all of whom were kind enough to provide their autographs.

Sandra and Lou bought their house on Valentine’s Day, 1988. “We chose Danville because it is a safe community, has great restaurants, a charming downtown and the weather is wonderful. We chose our house because of the spectacular views. We call this the cheap house with the million dollar views.”

Sandra and Lou truly enjoy volunteering their time in the community. One of their most cherished causes is the Museum of the San Ramon Valley.

They are both frequent Senior Sneaker trip attendees and enjoy all of the trips, some more than others. The Columbia State Park/California Caverns remains one of their most favorite trips. “For those who braved the deepest caverns, we are now known as “True Spelunkers,” an elite group.”

OLLI-Osher Lifelong Learning Institute PresentationWilliam Carlos WilliamsThursday, November 17, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m.Location: Town Meeting HallInstructor: Professor MarkosProfessor Markos introduces us to the poetry of William Carlos Williams, who resisted the siren call of Europe to put down roots in his hometown, Rutherford, New Jersey. The choice cemented his commitment to a poetry embedded in particulars---that famous red wheelbarrow, for example---but which showed great sophistication and complexity. While living the life of husband, father, doctor, and citizen in Rutherford, he made excursions to Manhattan to meet avant garde painters, writers, and intellectuals. The result is a body of memorable poems offering both vivid immediacy and deep meaning. FREE

No OLLI presentation is scheduled for December.

NOVEMBER BOOK

Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff

Her palace shimmered with onyx and gold but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. She had children by Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, two of the most prominent Romans of the day. With Antony she would attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled both their ends. Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Her supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order.

DECEMBER BOOK

Life by Keith Richards

With The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the songs that roused the world, and he lived the original rock and roll life. Now, at last, the man himself tells his story of life in the crossfire hurricane. Read about The Rolling Stones’ first fame and the notorious drug busts that led to his enduring image as an outlaw folk hero, creating immortal riffs like the ones in Jumping Jack Flash and Honky Tonk Women. This memoir discusses his relationship with Anita Pallenberg, the death of Brian Jones, his wildfire tours of the U.S., and his battles with isolation and addiction.

Hiking ClubThe Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults

ages 55 and up. The group will set out from the Danville Park-n-Ride (next to the 680 Northbound-Sycamore Valley freeway on-ramp) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:45 a.m. and return about 1:00 p.m. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually 4-5 miles, and the pace is moderate. Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/mile to the driver. Hikes scheduled for November and December will be held on: 11/9, 11/23, 12/14, and 12/28. If you think that you are physically active and want to join us for a hike, contact Jenn Overmoe, Program Coordinator, (925) 314-3491 or email [email protected].
