Seeing my son return to the Chapel Hill campus and North Carolina Delta this fall, I couldn’t help but reflect on how different college is today than when I was in school 30 years ago. Courses are taught online, freshman dorms rival corporate housing in their amenities, and

the pressures and challenges students face in a hyper-connected, global community would have been completely foreign to any of my Indiana chapter brothers in 1984.

Yet, much has stayed the same. Students and their campuses still need leadership, and they still need SigEp … perhaps now more than ever. Your support ensures SigEp’s continued role as a critical and valued partner in higher education. Because of you, the 2014 fiscal year was one of significant progress and unprecedented success, and I’m excited to share with you our 2014 Annual Report.

By the end of the 2013-2014 school year, SigEp was supporting the growth and development of 15,286 men—making us the largest national fraternity. Our continued success and relevance among college males is driven by our brand-defining Balanced Man Program. Undergraduates spend 90 percent of college outside of a classroom, and the Balanced Man Program helps brothers use that time to develop skills and experiences they need to succeed in college and beyond. Our brothers are Rhodes and Marshall Scholars, varsity athletes, and student body presidents. Collectively, they achieved the highest GPA in our Fraternity’s history last year with a 3.14.

We have continued to invest in volunteers and university partnerships. Last year, 149 SigEp faculty fellows made academic support a central piece of the chapter experience, and a new property management service was developed to allow volunteers to shift their focus from addressing housing issues to mentoring our undergraduates. Last year also saw the accreditation of two new Residential Learning Communities, bringing our total to 48, and we expect to see further growth in the coming semesters.

Our nationally acclaimed series of leadership events continued to give brothers the chance to develop the leadership and life skills they need to make a difference in their chapters, campuses and communities. Enrollment in our leadership events reached an all-time high of 7,911 in the 2013-2014 school year, giving more students access to leadership programs than any other fraternity.

Preparing our brothers to succeed upon graduation has become a major focus for SigEp. Our newest leadership event, Life After College, has touched the lives of 658 men since it first launched in 2013, and career preparedness education was added to Carlson Leadership Academies, Conclave and EDGE last year.

None of this would have been possible without your support. Undergraduate success is the product of a better SigEp experience, and we’ve been able to make these strides because you stood with us last year. In our 2014 fiscal year, brothers and friends gave 2.5 million dollars in support of SigEp. 1,011,587 of those dollars came in the form of unrestricted gifts critical to supporting the chapter programs, leadership events and scholarships that give SigEp our competitive edge—an 8 percent growth in giving since last year. We also welcomed 496 new brothers and friends to our donor family.

Since Conclave, our Educational Foundation’s Board of Trustees has focused their efforts on providing outstanding fiduciary oversight of Foundation assets. Under the leadership of President Dr. Edward Hammond, Emporia State ‘66, our Trustees have worked tirelessly to ensure that Foundation practices exceed industry standards and your expectations as a donor. Hammond, President Emeritus of Fort Hays State University and the longest-serving college leader in the Kansas regents system, brings 48 years of experience to an already talented board. Under their guidance, our endowed funds grew by 15 percent in 2014 to reach 12.96 million by June 30, 2014.

This year has given us so much to celebrate. It has also reminded us that we have work ahead. Undergraduate fees still provide funding for 80 percent of the SigEp experience—a dependence that limits the reach of our programs, events and scholarships each year. I am confident that with your continued support we will soon be able to give every deserving brother access to the best SigEp experience.

Thank you for believing in SigEp. Your support makes our Fraternity the most empowering and transformative part of college for our brothers.

Fraternally,

Phillip A. CoxGrand President

T ODAY, 90 PERCENT OF THE COLLEGE ExPERIENCE TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE THE WALLS OF A CLASSROOM, AND

SIGEP HAS THE ABILITY TO FOREVER CHANGE THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO SPEND THAT 90 PERCENT WITH US.

With your support, we are able to do more each year, to innovate and to serve as a valued partner in higher education. Our brothers enjoy an experience defined by chapter programs that support their daily growth, leadership events that equip them with the skills they need to lead their chapters and communities, and scholarships that keep academic successat the forefront of their minds.

Throughout my years

in college, I know I have been

made better as a result of

the Balanced Man Program

and Sigma Phi Epsilon. At

first, I didn’t want to go Greek, but then I

realized that SigEp was different, and its core

values were essentially an extension of those

on which I was raised. The Balanced Man

It’s in this part of the college experience—the unplanned, unstructured hours—that students discover their passions and plan for their futures. For our brothers, much of this time is spent with their chapters—it’s where they learn how to communicate and work with others, to lead and speak in front of a crowd.

The Balanced Man Program is the centerpiece of their SigEp chapter experience. The program is designed to provide the structure, support and guidance that is typically lacking in college. Alumni-volunteers, faculty and mentors provide personal and professional guidance through a program focused on scholarship, leadership and life skills. The refinement of these crucial skills helps our brothers succeed upon graduation and prepares them to achieve balance in every aspect of their lives.

reSIDeNtIaL LearNING cOMMUNItIeSSIGep’S reSIDeNtIaL LearNING cOMMUNItY program expands upon traditional residential college models from Oxford and Cambridge to provide brothers with a living-learning environment where they are surrounded by high-achieving peers and university faculty. Faculty fellows and graduate students serving as resident scholars teach classes, host office hours and facilitate discussions, all within the chapter’s home. Brothers at RLC chapters have higher grades, are more engaged in campus activities, and are more likely to spend their time outside of the classroom developing life skills they need to succeedafter graduation.

Today, 48 chapters are accredited through a rigorous RLC application process, but the elements of this program can be found at any SigEp chapter. Gifts from alumni and friends support the four core areas of these living-learning communities: consistently productive Balanced Man Program experiences, university partnerships supported by faculty fellows, strong networks of volunteer support, and physical environments conducive to academic success.

While the house is the heart of our RLC

program, brothers have fostered an

environment of living and learning that extends

beyond the house. Being surrounded by positive

undergraduate and alumni role models has helped

me learn key lessons about time and stress

management, communication, decision-making

and other life skills.”—Sam Schroeder, cincinnati ‘17

VOLUNteerS SerVING at the LOcaL, reGIONaL aND NatIONaL LeVeLSare a huge part of SigEp’s success. Many of SigEp’s volunteers are alumni who stay involved to give back. Others are members of the university’s faculty and staff as well as parents and community leaders who volunteer because they believe in SigEp’s ideals and want to make an impact on the lives of undergraduate men. Their involvement means that our brothers are supported by strong mentors and role models.

Each year, volunteers have opportunities to hone their skills and connect with peers and mentors at SigEp’s leadership events. In our 2014 fiscal year, Carlson Leadership Academies and the Grand Chapter Conclave offered expanded opportunities for volunteer education.

Each summer, brothers walk in the footsteps of such giants as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle through this life-changing experience in Greece. Guided by alumni mentors and university faculty, these scholars study the role Greek philosophy, government, and the arts played in the founding of western democracy and the American college fraternity.

The 10-day program is named for and made possible by a generous gift from Past Grand President William G. Tragos, Washington in St. Louis ’56, and his wife, Lilli.

Each year the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation awards 20 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to SigEp undergraduates who have distinguished themselves through academic, campus, community and Fraternity accomplishments.

National Competition Scholarship recipients represent the best of SigEp’s commitment to be a valued partner in higher education. These scholarships are made possible by Annual Fund donors and endowed gifts.

MY SIGep eXperIeNce, more than anything, has taught me the great importance of

having a loyal group of brothers that will support you in any situation. I had the chance to

learn and grow with a very close-knit group of friends that I will cherish for the rest of my

life, and along the way I have seen how acting with Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love

can lead to success.” —ryan perry, Indiana ‘16

Each year, the Zollinger Senior Award is presented to an outstanding senior in each of SigEp’s 26 districts for scholastic and extracurricular excellence. In turn, their chapter is able to award a Zollinger Scholarship to a rising leader during his junior and senior years. Recipients of Zollinger Scholarships are sophomore brothers who possess special potential for future leadership roles in their chapter and on campus. Scholars receive a $500 scholarship in their junior year and another $500 scholarship in their senior year.

These awards are made possible by the generosity of Past Grand President J. Edward Zollinger, William & Mary ‘27, as well as generous gifts made by his wife Lucile, daughter Frances, and son John Zollinger, Lehigh ‘57.

I really tried to prevent financial burdens from

getting in the way of staying active at school.

During my last two years this became a challenge

as tuition increased and most of my high school

scholarships ended. The Zollinger Scholarship made

it possible for me to maintain balance in my life and

never have to consider leaving the organizations

I cared about to have more time to work. I am very

thankful that the incredible contributions of another

brother in my chapter could help me succeed.”—Seth koch, Michigan ‘14

As a sophomore in college, Thomas 0. Hicks, Texas-Austin ‘68 was motivated by the Texas Alpha Chapter to get serious about his grades, which had suffered during his freshman year. He improved his GPA significantly that year and kept it up, eventually obtaining a masters degree at Southern California. In funding this special scholarship program, Brother Hicks recognizes and rewards brothers who get on track with their grades after a poor start. These scholarships go to SigEp juniors who have significantly improved their GPA since their freshman year.

Brother Hicks is a Life Trustee of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, has been the owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars, and is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hicks Holdings LLC, a private investment firm based in Dallas, Texas.

HOOP OF STEEL

SOCIETY

Named after SigEp’s Hoop of Steel Senior Charge, the Hoop of Steel Society celebrates undergraduate brothers and the bonds they’ve formed through SigEp. Undergraduates make symbolic contributions to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, with many making their gifts in honor of mentors who have helped define their SigEp experience.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Board of Governors celebrates the generosity of alumni, spouses, parents, volunteers, staff and friends who contribute $1,200 or more each year in unrestricted gifts. Also recognized are undergraduates and donors under 30 who contribute $600 or more through the Beacon Society. The leadership these donors demonstrate with their gifts allows SigEp to expand the quality and reach of chapter programs, regional and national leadership events, and academic scholarships annually.

I DONate tO SIGMa phI epSILON aS a SMaLL tOkeN OF apprecIatION for everything this Fraternity did for me as an undergraduate, and everything it continues to do for me to this day. SigEp provided me with once in a lifetime opportunities like Ruck and the Tragos Quest to Greece,

and the experiences I’ve had, along with the knowledge I’ve gained along the way, could never be qualified with any amount of money. Even as a young professional with limited disposable income, I find a way to help give back to the Fraternity that has given me so much. With donations like mine, I hopethat SigEp can continue to provide opportunities to undergraduates for many generations to come.” —Daniel Mccaulley, arkansas tech ‘11

W. H. and Callie Anne Clark with the brothers of North Carolina State.

To learn more, visit sigep.org/legacy

Early in my college years at NC State University, SigEp

invited me to become a member. That occasion turned out

to be one of the most treasured steps of my life. I say one, since

the best was to pursue and capture that real love of my life,

Callie Anne.

Over the years we have been blessed to experience countless

personal and business experiences. Along the way we have been

blessed to share our fortune with various organizations such as

SigEp, colleges, churches, museums and other organizations.

Underlying all this, I frequently realize that SigEp and the things

it taught me have been invaluable. Qualities such as honesty,

integrity, ambition, loyalty, and fraternity have always been an

integral part of my life.” —W. h. clark, North carolina State ’56

The generosity of W. H. and Callie Anne Clark’s planned gift will allow them to pass on these values to young SigEps for generations to come.

Trustees are appointed by the National Board to provide financial and legal oversight of our Educational Foundation’s assets. Representing the fields of higher education, nonprofit, finance and law, Trustees volunteer their time to ensure that gifts made in support of SigEp’s mission have the greatest possible impact on the lives of our members.

As industry experts, SENH Directors administer the Fraternity’s housing loan program and support construction, operation, and management of SigEp’s housing initiatives. The guidance of these highly engaged volunteers is essential to the success of chapter-level capital campaigns and the growth of our Residential Learning Community program.

caSh Or checkYou can mail a check, cash or credit card gift to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundationat 310 South Boulevard, richmond, Va. 23220.

cOrpOrateMatchING GIFtSMany companies will match their employees’ contributions to nonprofits like the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. Some even match gifts made by retirees and spouses.Visit sigep.org/match to learn more and seeif your company will match your gift.

hONOr aNDMeMOrIaL GIFtSMaking a gift in honor or in memory of a brother, family member or friend is a great way to pay tribute to those who have made an impact in your life. Our Headquarters staff will inform honorees (or living relatives) of your generosity.

eNDOWMeNtS aND NaMeD GIFtSNamed gifts allow donors to make a leadership level impact on the lives of our brothers, while endowed funds ensure that impact continues in perpetuity. Donors can establish endowments and named gifts for specific use such as chapter programs, leadership events, scholarships, faculty fellows or study abroad. The Foundation works with each donor to prepare guidelines for the administration of endowed and named funds.

pLaNNeD GIFtSPlanned gifts allow you to leave a legacy by making a gift for the future that costs you nothing today. You can make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. Donors with documented planned gifts on file with our Educational Foundation are honored through the Legacy Society.

Our donors are united in their belief that a SigEp experience can be truly transformational. As a public charity and a 501(c)(3) corporation, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation provides brothers and friends with a variety of ways to impact the lives of our youngest brothers and support the programs, events and scholarships that define their undergraduate years.
