SHRIMP SCHOOL, the first of its kind organized by BL Trade Links is headed by Sanghamitra Nayak. Sanghamitra hasmore than 10 years of research related experience in aqua industry with focus in Biotechnology and Probiotics and latelyfinished Ph.D in Kassetsart University, under Dr Chalor Limsuwan.

Shrimp School concept was planned and designed for the shrimp industry and to keep this industry sustainable over theperiod of time to come in future. Shrimp Industry inception in India was in late 80s with few MNCs coming to the industrydue to the high export value of the shrimp.

Since then and now Shrimp Industry has undergone several ups and downs and revolutionary changes with PL pricessoaring as high as TWO rupees and lack of proper infrastructure but still great crop in early 90s until the industry was hitby the dreaded white spot disease.

Revolution and education for better and healthy crop introduction of chemicals, antibiotics and use of pesticides for controllingpathogens and carriers led the industry to grow with demand of shrimp in western countries increasing and the hub of theshrimp industry confined to South East Asia.

Diseases in any livestock industry have been the biggest challenge for continued and sustainable crop. The same hasbeen the biggest challenge for shrimp industrys growth but farmers started living with the problems and how to survive andhave a successful crop.

Economic slowdown in west had a great impact on the shrimp industry where people in the west decided to eat less andreduce their debts, exports slowed down and India became non-competitive as black tiger shrimp production prices ishigher as compared to white shrimps and other SEAsia countries shifting to white shrimps in early to mid-2000.

India seeing the threat of losing the business completely and a high foreign income started to re-evaluate bringing the whiteshrimps and a pilot project started with only two hatcheries and later has been introduced in Indian waters commercially in2009 with lot of regulations and controlling agency looking into over expansion and killing the natural black tiger industry.

Intensification and over production from the same water spread area with concepts of multiple harvesting led to over

stocking and similar model was followed in India where few farmers started even reaping almost 20.0mts/ha. SPF broodstock import regulations led to use of farm reared brood stock by few people in many countries as well as India as the needof PLs increased with high stocking and multiple crops and harvest. Inbreeding leading to exposure and challenginggenetics of broodstock and PL quality issues leading to new diseases.

High harvest and again the hike in price with now lack of new concepts and technologies started taking short cuts in shrimpfarming and this has led to land in a scenario with dreaded diseases which are to a large extent on poor management.

Early Mortality Syndrome(EMS) the dreaded diseases which started in China and has travelled to all countries in the regionhas parked its base now in India which has been officially confirmed. Majority of the deaths in early months when have beenanalyzed has seen only less than 20% impacted by the so-called bug Vibrio parahaemolyticusbut the bigger problem hasbeen the white spot virus which has been seen in more than 50% of the mortalities and the remaining can be co-related topoor management of shrimp pond .

Understanding, the above facts and without having a solution for EMS and WSSV, at least 50% of the mortalities can beavoided by proper Shrimp Pond Management Practices.

Shrimp School intends and has brought in speakers for the first time under one platform who from their varied long experiencewill share on making the management practices more robust and take BACK TO BASICS which we by the evolution of timehas been sidelined or forgotten.

Shrimp School will continue this in each year with new concepts and need of the industry and already has got the attentionof people of other nations requesting to host similar event in other countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia.
