Merrifield’s Very Own Bi-Weekly Newspaper 18 August 2017

From the Executive Head, Dr Guy Hartley

The highpoint of our twentieth year celebrations is upon us as we enter two weeks ahead of festivities.

The students have been applying themselves well in rehearsals as they gear up for three performances

of our “Unstoppable” production in the Guild Theatre as a showcase of music, arts and drama at

Merrifield. Each student in grades 1-9 gets the opportunity to appear on stage, and appreciate the

atmosphere and workings of a regional theatre. They are sure to acquit themselves well and are

looking forward to “wowing” our parent audiences.

Next weekend, the College and Prep then host St George’s from Port Elizabeth in our major derby

sports matches of the year. We have a healthy, long term rivalry with St George’s, as one of the leading

independent schools in the NMMU region, and can look forward to a weekend of good spirit,

comaraderie and competition. There are also prep and college socials on the Friday night as we build

friendships with our St George’s guests.

The following week we move to our Founders’ Day celebrations. This year we have invited former

headmaster, Tony Law, to be our guest-of-honour. We also honour our matric class of 2007, who have

now been ten years out of school. Former SRC Head of 2007, Vuyo Gabelana, will address the students

at the Founders’ Day assembly on behalf of the 2007 year group. Please be invited to join in the activi-

ties as we commemorate our twentieth year!

SHOWTIME! Rehearsals are underway for Unstoppable, Merrifield's 20th birthday celebration. The play will be staged at the Guild Theatre next week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (22, 23 and 24 August). Tickets are available from the school and Computicket. The cast includes students from Grade 1 to Matric, as well as staff members. It's a beautiful show! Synopsis: UNSTOPPABLE - A Merrifield School 20th Anniversary Celebration – tells the story of Lily, an inquisitive grade one student on the first day of school, who grows up in front of the audience’s eyes. The more she is antagonised by her older brother, Matt, the more frantic she becomes to find her talent – to find who she is and where she belongs. This show celebrates Merrifield’s rich cultural diversity with dancing, singing, acting, marimba bands and musical instruments. It showcases the talents of learners ranging from grade one to grade twelve, in a heart-warming story that is sure to appeal to audiences of all ages.

Minimising our single use plastic items: The Eco Club upcycled old t-shirts into shopping bags. In a few easy steps, old clothing became funky grocery bags! Don't forget about our Big 4 Challenge in becoming more waste wise. Say no to four main single use plastic items: Plastic bags; Plastic bottles; Coffee cups and lids; Straws. And keep taking three pieces of litter off the beach whenever you go. Small changes make a big difference!

BONES: The Grade 10 science students dissected large, long

bones in the lab this week.

CELEBRATE: A Schultüte is given to children

in Germany on their first day of school, and is

filled with all sorts of treats and yummy sweets.

The Merrifield moms got together on
