Ernest• Original area mining was conducted from 1903 to 1965. • Assessment of the pile estimated volume to be 11,500,000 tons

covering 94 acres. • Cambria Reclamation Company purchased the pile in 1995

– Reclamation began in October 1996

Lucerne• Original area mining was conducted from 1907 to 1967.• Original assessment of the pile estimated volume to be 8,700,000

tons covering 125 acres.• Cambria Reclamation Company purchased the pile in 1995

– Began to remove fuel in May 2012– Approximately 700,000 tons per year

Fuel Management

• Reclamation Begins with Beneficial Use Ash

• Beneficial Use Permit

– Quarterly Coal Ash Quality Assessment

– Fly Ash and Bottom Ash

– Over 30 constituents analyzed

• Heavy metals, nitrates, pH, CaCO3,etc

Fuel Management

• Fuel hauled to plant with ash haul back

• Ash placed in 2ft compacted lifts

• Water added for compaction and dust management

• At final grade elevation of ash placement– Clay and top soil added – Fertilizer – Grasses, trees, shrubs, etc.

• Reclamation – Goal is Wildlife Habitat– Types of grass and trees planted

• Annual rye grass• Perennial Rye• Birds foot Trefoil• Clover and Timothy• Bent grass and Oats• American Chestnut Hybrid

– Coordinated with the Office of Surface Mining

Environmental - Ernest

• Evaluating the Impact – Is this working?

• Water Quality Monitoring - Monthly

• 24 surface monitoring points

• 3 ground water wells.

• Monitor to ensure mining activity is not adversely affecting the groundwater or McKee Run
