Week 5: This week, we are going to explore the story book:

Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson

We have provided one daily activity linked to this story for you to try

at home this week.

Please re-read the book or watch the video clip every day so that your

child becomes familiar with the story. The link for the video clip is on

the next page.

On our home learning page, there are a few PDF resources available

for you to download at home if you wish. These resources consist of

Sharing a Shell story sequencing cards, stick puppets to support story

telling, counting sea creatures and pencil control activities.

Monday:

Read the story with your grown up using the YouTube link below:

(YouTube: Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson, read along)

Talk about the story together. Here are some discussion ideas:

What is the title of the story?

What is the story about?

What does sharing mean?

Can you think of a time you shared something?

What sea creatures does the crab meet along the way?

Tuesday:

Re-watch and listen to the story again.

What can you remember from the story?

Try your hardest to join in with the story.

Today we would like you to create your own shell that you could wear/

place on your back

You could use anything that you may have at home, for example, recycled

cardboard, pieces of material or an empty box.

Additional activity:

Is your shell big enough for more than one person?

Share your shell with your family.

How many members of your family can you fit inside your shell?

Wednesday:

This story has the message of friendship.

Have a discussion with your grown up about friendship.

Who are your friends?

What do you like doing with your friends?

What makes a good friend?

Activity: Please draw or paint a picture of

you and your friends.

Extension: Write the first sound of each of

your friend’s names on your picture.

There are lots of friendship songs available on YouTube if you would like

to listen to them with your grown up. Here are a few links:

Thursday:

Paper Crab Plates

Today we would like you to create your

own crab for the story!

You could use any materials you have at

home. The examples to the right have

been created using a paper plate. If you

have a paper plate at home, you could use

the whole plate or ask a grown up to help

you cut the plate in half to create your

crab.

You can make your crab any colour that

you like!

You could even give your crab a name.

What is the first letter sound of your crab’s name? Write it on the shell.

Extension:

Read Sharing a Shell again with your grownup, but this time, use your

crab to help you retell the story!

Friday:

Rock pool Art:

Yesterday you created your very own crab for the story.

Today we would like you to create a piece of rock pool art for your crab

to live in!

Look back at the rock pool in the story.

What shape is the rock pool?

What colours can you see?

What creatures can you see living in this rock pool?

You could draw, paint or

create your own rock pool

using any resources you

have at home.

Extension:

Count how many rocks you put in your rock pool. Now count how many

colours you used. Write your answers on your piece of artwork.
