Faculty Coordinator Speak Dear Alumnus, This year SJMSOM completes 15 years of its inception, bounded to the task of producing com-petent management graduates. We have

been admired by the public and corpo-rate as a Business School of repute, churning out professionals who are adept in their field of practice. This is reflected in SJMSOM being ranked as one of In-dia‘s most prestigious Business School, in various surveys consistently. The number of graduates has increased from 40 to 120 over the years. Many of our alumni have great achievements to their credit. The School has also considerably strengthened its faculty in various disci-plines. Alumni Connect is a platform for all of us to share our ideas and take up activi-ties to make SJMSOM Alumni a very vibrant community. Some of our recent initiatives have been the organization of an informal cricket match between our alumni and an informal meet at Delhi in December. We now look forward to more participa-tion from the Alumni in all our activities and in the events held at the School. This year we plan to invite our first batch of alumni for the National Alumni Meet 2012, which we intend to host in a grand scale as it coincides with our 15th year celebrations. Management, IIT Bombay is

on a progressive path in all

spheres, including the aca-

demic structure. Facilitated

by the increased faculty

strength, and in response to

the dynamic global environ-

ment, the curriculum was

revised again for the academic

year 2011–12, keeping in

mind the following factors:

Increasing importance of sus-

tainable development in eco-

nomic activities: to prepare

students for the changing

business focus on societal and

environmental aspects.

Balanced inputs to the stu-

dents: Facilitating experiential

learning through a judicious

mix of courses, projects, case

studies and collaborative prac-

ticum.

Alignment with the Institute

slot system: The revised pro-

gram structure mostly offers 3

and 6 credit courses to align

with the institute slot system.

For the first time, a weeklong

induction process was con-

ducted by the senior students

and faculty for the new stu-

The new batch was given

ample opportunity to interact

with the faculty and seniors.

Various team building exer-

Rohitash Gupta, Batch 1999

I obtained my B-Tech in Electrical engineer-

ing from Indian Institute of Technology,

Kanpur in 1995. After a stimulating two year

stint at Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) managing

order handling, sales and customer relation-

ship, I joined SOM and completed my mas-

ters in Operations and Marketing manage-

ment in 1999.

While at SOM, I was involved in several on

campus activities such as organizing Busi-

ness/Trivia quizzes. SOM gave me the fuel

and the ignition to embark on an exciting

professional journey where I continue to

learn something new at every turn I take.

I started my career in management at Tata

AutoComp Systems as Executive Assistant

to Managing Director and gained experience

in corporate planning, joint ventures and

corporate governance.

Armed with the learning at TAS, I joined

Siemens and offered management consulting

in the areas of operations, marketing, BPR

and organizational transformation. I was also

instrumental in designing the first national

Unique Identifier Number scheme for

EPFO (predecessor of Aadhar project).

After working with some of the industry

leaders in both India and abroad, I joined

eClerx in 2003. It has been an exciting jour-

ney so far and for the past one and a half

year as the CFO of the company, I got an

opportunity to look after cash and treasury

management, investor relations, business

planning and MIS, automation of financial

systems and controls implementation, devel-

opment of robust risk management systems

across the organization, identification of

opportunities for acquisitions and strategic

partnerships, ensuring legal secretarial and

contractual compliances, review and negotia-

tion of key client and vendor contracts

amongst other responsibilities.

Over the years, I have gained considerable

expertise in the realms of web analytics, pric-

ing analysis, revenue forecasting, risk assess-

ment, business process improvement, cost

management, organizational design, acquisi-

tions integration, customer engagement, cor-

porate development, management consulting,

corporate governance, etc.

I am passionate about my work but when I‘m

not working I have a plethora of activities

planned to keep me interested such as travel-

ling, feasting on exotic food and playing

cricket.

‗SAMinitiatives‘ – is a startup launched

by 3 students of SJMSOM, IIT Bombay

2012 batch, Sumit Sharma, Amit

Kumar, and Mahtab Masood. The name

‗SAM‘ is derived from the initials of the

founders. The startup aims to provide a

niche & innovative advertising platform

to companies/brands/advertisers target-

ing college going students.

SAMinitiatives was launched in July‘11,

with their flagship product ‗My notes‘

campus notebook & a website for mar-

ket research on their customer base. The

‗My notes‘ campus notebook was con-

ceptualized as a low cost, high quality,

multi-subject stationery notebook, that

was subsidized by advertisements.

SAM Initiatives - Learning by Doing

For implementing this idea, they con-

tacted numerous advertisers, and con-

ducted a careful selection of vendors for

outsourcing printing and binding of the

notebooks.

The advertisements were placed as ‗separators‘ in the notebook to act as a

functional utility, viewed multiple times

during the use of the notebook. The mul-

tiple views of ads in the notebook are

expected to increase brand recall & reten-

tion of the advertised products, and

through a post-launch market survey this

has been confirmed. The price of the

notebook is only Rs15, for a 60 page,

spiral bound notebook.

The product launched in the IIT Bombay

campus is available in most of the hostel

stores, and the entire stock of 1100+

notebooks was sold out within 5 days,

achieving financial break-even. They me-

ticulously planned the exact date of the

launch, internal publicity in IIT for pro-

moting the product, retailer education,

and also how to encourage customers

‗Alma Matters‘ – the annual

National Alumni Meet of

Shailesh J. Mehta School Of

Management, IIT Bombay for

the year 2011 was materialized

on 27th August . the program

took off with the much

awaited Panel Discussion

consisting of eminent person-

CEO of Loop Mobile; Mr.

Prabhat Paani, PhD Scholar

and CEO of Ginger Hotels

and Mr. Rakesh Pundir, Batch

of ‘97, VP of Idea Cellular

with Prof. Shishir Jha acting

as the moderator. The cultural

began with a brilliant, nostal-

gic rendition by Rajat Sharma

with Deepankar Boro han-

dling the strings. The group

dance by SOM ‘13 was total

non-stop fun. The activities at

the campus came to a close

with the showcasing of the

video created exclusively for

the event.

The scene then shifted to

Rodas, the extravagant ecotel

in Hiranandani Gardens

where dinner was waiting for

the guests. It was a very pleas-

ant sight to see students from

the 2012 & 2013 batch inter-

acting with the Alumni of the

1997 Batch and still having

common topics to talk and

smile about. It was even bet-

ter to see their families bond-

ing with each other. All in all,

Alumni, without which an

event on such a grand scale

would have been unimagin-

able.

National Alumni Meet 2011

The evening was made even

more special as it was at-

tended by alumni from seven

different batches, from the

1998 to the 2013 batch from

Delhi NCR.

Some of the most senior

alumni of SOM were also

present like Mr. Ashish Maha-

jan, SOM Batch of 1998, Mr.

Sanjay Yadav, Management

Development Program, Batch

of 2007 & Mr. Sumit Sahni,

Management Development

Program, Batch of 2008. For

us, it was a great experience to

interact with the senior

alumni of SJMSOM, some of

whom have about 20 years of

industry experience.

The evening was a grand suc-

Alumni Hangout 2011, Delhi

The SJMSOM Alumni Hang-

out Delhi on the 18th of De-

cember 2011 was the second

such event of a trend started

in 2010. A casual get together

over a cup of coffee was the

motto of the event, but it

turned out to be much more

than that.

From recent SOM activities,

admissions, academics to pro-

fessional & personal experi-

ences of all, much was dis-

cussed at length. Many sug-

gestions and ideas to grow &

improve the SJMSOM alumni

network were also explored.

We had a small introduction

round in which everyone

shared their most memorable

and not so memorable experi-

ences in SOM. This set the

pace for the rest of the eve-

ning and helped break the ice.
