    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Success of any organization depends largely on its competent employees and the

extent to which the knowledge is shared in that organization. Competency Mapping

is a process through which one assesses and determines ones strengths as an

individual worker ad in some cases as a part of an organization where as Knowledge

acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, learning,

communication, association and reasoning. Hence, competency mapping and

management of knowledge and its resources play a significant role in growth and

    development of the organization.

Knowledge Management ('KM') comprises a range of practices

used by organizations to identify, create, represent, and distribute knowledge. It isdivided into stages like acquiring knowledge, sharing, storing and leveraging the

    knowledge both at personal

level as well as professional level.

Competency mapping examines two areas: emotional intelligence

quotient(EQ),and strengths of the individual in Areas like team structure,

leadership, and decision-making. Knowledge management refers to all systematic

activities for creation and sharing of knowledge so that knowledge can be used for

the success of the organization. KM processes provide a framework for connecting

people to people and people to information, to develop and share distilled learning

    and best practices.

This report is an attempt to check the competency level and study the status of

the Knowledge management in this organization. The report starts with

Introduction of the Company, its achievements and then elaborates the concept of

competency mapping and Knowledge Management; in KRIBHCO, and data analysis

and interpretation on the basis of

    perception of employees.

    PURPOSE OF STUDY

Being student of B.COM (h) it is very essential for is to have a

practical knowledge in an organization. Only theoretical knowledge is not

essential for us. Only to study business administration course is not the

solution of the problem, which arises in a practical filed. There is no certain

formula for achieving practical knowledge but the problem is overcome by

training method. The aim of this is to develop the ability of decision making.

A right decision at right time at right place itself helps an organization to run

    in smooth & satisfactory manner.

    INTRODUCTION OF KRIBHCO

A fertilizer is any material, organic, inorganic, natural or

systematic, that is placed on or incorporated into the soil to supply

plants with one or more of the chemicals elements necessary for normal

growth. Fertilizer is the material, which supplies the chemicals elements

required for plant growth. Primary nutrients like nitrogen, phosphates

and potassium are supplied through chemical fertilizer. Fertilizer

response studies have proved that 1 kg. Of fertilizer can increase the

food grain production by 8-10 kg. Fertilizer production is of permanent

importance for this country because Fertilizer increases agriculture

    productivity.

Krishak Bharati Co-operative Limited (KRIBHCO), a premier Co-

operative Society for manufacture of fertilizer, registered under Multi-

State Cooperative Societies Act 1985, was promoted by the Govt. of

India, KRIBHCO, NCDC and other agricultural cooperative societies

spread all over the country. 5 Oil & Gas findings in Bombay High and

South Basin triggered off the birth of eight new generations fertilizer

plants to fulfill ever-growing food needs of the country.

KRIBHCO was amongst the first two projects in the first phase.

KRIBHCO has setup a Fertilizer Complex to manufacture Urea, Ammonia

& Bio- fertilizers at Hazira, in the State of Gujarat, on the bank of riverTapti, near Kawas village,15 Kms from Surat city and 20 Kms from Surat

Railway Station on Surat Hazira State Highway.

Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India laid the

Foundation Stone on February 5, 1982.

The trial production of Urea commenced from November 26, 1985

and within a very short time of 3 months, the commercial production

commenced from March 01, 1986. Since then, it has excelled in

performance in all areas of its operations. The total Project cost was Rs.

890 crores as against the estimated cost of Rs. 957 crores. This shows a

saving of Rs. 67 crores (approximately 7%) in Capital Cost of the

Project, which is a rare feature in the history of a Public Sector Unit.

Subsequently, a Bio-fertilizer plant of 100 MT per year capacity

was commissioned at Hazira on August 15, 1995. KRIBHCO has also

completed the installation of an expansion of the Bio-Fertilizer plantwith an additional capacity of 150 MT and the same was commissioned

in December 1, 1998. KRIBHCO multiunit co-operative societies were

promoted jointly by KRIBHCO and the agricultural co-operative all over

    the country. KRIBHCO.

    KRIBHCO PERFORMANCE

During the year 2010-11, the production performance of the

Shahjahanpur Plant of your Company was exemplary. The Company

surpassed all its previous records in terms of production and energy

efficiency. The Company achieved an all-time record for the highest ever

Urea production of 10.28 Lac MT with capacity utilization of 118.90%,and Ammonia production of 6.07 Lac MT with capacity utilization of

121.03%. This year also saw the lowest ever energy consumption in the

history of the Plant with 5.585 Gcal/MT for Urea and 7.981 Gcal/MT for

    Ammonia production.

Another milestone achieved by the Company was that the Company

has met the cut-off point fixed by Department of Fertilizer, Government

of India, thus making it eligible for Import Parity Price (IPP) Scheme.

The Company had crossed the qualifying production level of 9,55,301

MT and thus the entire production beyond the cut-off level of9,09,810MT amounting to 1,18,190 MT qualified for pricing under the IPPScheme.

A planned shutdown of plant was taken from the evening of 26th

March, 2011 to carry-out the remaining jobs of PhaseI of RevampProject and also for planned maintenance activities. Some of the major

jobs undertaken were replacement of the damaged RG Boiler, extensive

repairs to the CO2 compressors, replacement of major electronic

controls, replacement of packings of 2 beds of CO2 absorber, changing

line size of process gas line, replacing 2 rows of burners etc. The jobs

undertaken during the shutdown were major and some were done for

the first time in the industry.

The original estimated duration of shutdown was 25 days but because

of very meticulous planning andtight monitoring, all the jobs were well

completed before the schedule and one stream of urea plant was started

on 12th April, 2011 i.e. after 17 days only. The second stream of urea

plant was started on 15th April, 2011. The Company had also

undertaken major revamp of electronics in the Offsite, Ammonia as well

as Urea plants and after start-up there were some teething problems

    which were later on stabilized.

During the year, your Company achieved unparalleled performance in

its dispatch and sales operations and closed the year with zero

inventory of urea. The opening stock of 985.40 MT urea as well as the

full production of 10.28 Lac MT urea was dispatched and sold with zero

closing stock of urea. The Company has received all payments for sale of

urea and there were no pending receivables from the sales channel at

    the end of year.

    Handling Of Imported Fertilizers

Handling of imported fertilizer is a very dynamic and time bound

activity and involves lot of documentation. This is more so in the case of

KRIBHCO, as the manpower required for supervision at various ports is

taken from State Officer/ Field Officer on rotation basis. The Vessel has to

berthed on allowed time to avoid demurrage. The material is stored in theport warehouse for standardization, bagging etc and dispatched to different

States by Rail/Road at the earliest with a view to make these available to

formers. In case of imported Urea and DAP, lots of dues are receivable from

GOL and all these activities have to be completed in time.

During the year 200708, KRIBHCO handled 57 vessels carrying 17.3 lakh

MT imported Urea and DAP at Kandla, Pipavav, Vizag, New Mangalore,

    Chennai and Kakinada Ports.

    Opening Stocks Of Fertilizers

  • 8/2/2019 Shailesh`s Project

    25/61

    25

The opening stocks of KRIBHCO fertilizers in the field warehouse

including stock in transit as on 1 April, 2008 was 2.57 lakh MT as against

10.03 lakh on the same date last year.

    Product Movement

The volume of fertilizer dispatched in the year 1999 2000 was only

52.7 lakh tones and it has increased to a level of 86.0 lakh tones in 200708

lakh tones in 200708, which is inclusive of 15.1 lakh OMIFCO/ Imported

urea and 2.2 lakh MT DAP. This is, no doubt, a stupendous task which

involves meticulous planning and execution. During the year 2007 08,

about 3100 rakes were sent to different destination in different State i.c.

about 8.5 rakes per are on an average. Besides, movement by Rail, Road

movements are resorted to for servicing area within 250 Kms, from plants

and ports. In order to circumvent the constraints in conventional mode,

alternate mode by sea route has been taken up for dispatches of NP/DAP

    MEANIG OF TRANSPORTATION

Transport or transportation is the movement of people, animals and

goods from one location to another. Modes of transport include air, rail,

road, water, cable, pipeline, and space. The field can be divided into

infrastructure, vehicles, and operations. Transport is important since it

enables trade between peoples, which in turn establishes civilizations.

Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations necessary for

transport, and may be roads, railways, airways, waterways, canals and

pipelines, and terminals such as airports, railway stations, bus stations,

warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling

docks and fuel stations), and seaports. Terminals may be used both forinterchange of passengers and cargo and for maintenance.

Vehicles traveling on these networks may include automobiles, bicycles,

buses, trains, trucks, people, helicopters, and aircraft. Operations deal

with the way the vehicles are operated, and the procedures set for this

purpose including financing, legalities and policies. In the transport

industry, operations and ownership of infrastructure can be either

public or private, depending on the country and mode.

Passenger transport may be public, where operators provide scheduled

services, or private. Freight transport has become focused oncontainerization, although bulk transport is used for large volumes of

durable items. Transport plays an important part in economic growth

and globalization, but most types cause air pollution and use large

amounts of land. While it is heavily subsidized by governments, good

planning of transport is essential to make traffic flow, and restrain

    urban sprawl.

Transport refers to the activity that facilitates physical movement of

goods as well as individuals from one place to another. In business, it is

considered as an auxiliary to trade, that means, it supports trade and

industry in carrying raw materials to the place of production and

distributing finished products for consumption. Individuals or business

  • 8/2/2019 Shailesh`s Project

    42/61

    42

firms that engage themselves in such activities are called transporters.

    Generally, transporters carry raw material,

finished products, passangers, etc. from one place to another. So it

removes the distance barrier. Now-a-days goods produced at one place

are readily available at distant places. People move freely throughoutthe world because of transport. It is associated with every step of our

life. Without transport, we, as well as business units cannot move a

    singe step.

    Importance of Transport

Followings are the points of importance of transport.

    a. Makes available raw materials to manufacturers or producers:

Transport makes it possible to carry raw materials from places wherethey are available, to places where they can be processed and assembled

    into finished goods.

    b. Makes available goods to customers: Transport makes possible

movement of goods from one place to another with great ease and

speed. Thus, consumers spread in different parts of the country have the

benefit of consuming goods produced at distant places.

    c. Enhances standard of living: Easy means of transport facilitates

large-scale production at low costs. It gives consumers the choice to

make use of different quantities of goods at different prices. So it raisesthe standard of living of the people.

    d. Helps during emergencies and natural calamities: In times of

national crisis, due to war or internal disturbance, transport helps in

quick movement of troops and the supplies needed in the operation.

    e. Helps in creation of employment: Transport provides employment

opportunity to individuals as drivers, conductors, pilots, cabin crew,

captain of the ship, etc. who are directly engaged in transport business.

It also provides employment to people indirectly in the industries

producing various means of transport and other transport equipments.

People can also provide repairing and maintenance services by openingservice centres

    at convenient locations.

    f. Helps in labour mobility: Transport helps a lot in providing mobility

to workers. You may be aware that people from our country go to

foreign countries to work in different industries and factories.

  • 8/2/2019 Shailesh`s Project

    43/61

    43

Foreigners also come India to work. In India, people also move from one

part to another in search of work. Similarly, it is not always possible to

have workers near the factory. Most industries have their own transport

system to bring the workers from where they reside to the place of

work.g. Helps in bringing nations together: Transport facilitates movement

of people from one country to another. It helps in exchange of cultures,

views and practices between the people of different countries. This

brings about greater understanding among people and awareness about

different countries. Thus, it helps to promote a feeling of international

    brotherhood.

    Mode of transport

Mode of transport (or means of transport or transport mode or

transport modality or form of transport) is a term used to distinguish

substantially different ways to perform transport. The most dominantmodes of transport are aviation, land transport, which includes rail,

road and off-road transport, and ship transport. Other modes also exist,

including pipelines, cable transport, and space transport. Human-

powered transport and animal-powered transport are sometimes

regarded as their own mode, but these normally also fall into the other

    categories.

    (i) Seasonal Production- You know that agricultural commodities are

harvested during certain seasons, but their consumption or use takes

place throughout the year. Therefore, there is a need for proper storage

or warehousing for these commodities, from where they can be

    supplied as and when required.

(ii) Seasonal Demand- There are certain goods, which are demanded

seasonally, like woollen garments in winters or umbrellas in the rainy

season. The production of these goods takes place throughout the year

to meet the seasonal demand. So there is a need to store these goods in

a warehouse to make them available at the time of need.

(iii) Large-scale Production - In case of manufactured goods, now-a-

days production takes place to meet the existing as well as future

demand of the products. Manufacturersalso produce goods in huge

quantity to enjoy the benefits of large-scale production, which is more

economical. So the finished products, which are produced on a large

scale, need to be stored properly till they are cleared by sales.

(iv) Quick Supply - Both industrial as well as agricultural goods are

produced at some specific places but consumed throughout the country.

Therefore, it is essential to stock these goods near the place of

consumption, so that without making any delay these goods are made

available to the consumers at the time of their need.

    (v) Continuous Production- Continuous production of goods in

factories requires adequate supply of raw materials. So there is a need

to keep sufficient quantity of stock of raw material in the warehouse toensure continuous production.

(vi) Price Stabilization- To maintain a reasonable level of the price of

the goods in the market there is a need to keep sufficient stock in the

warehouses. Scarcity in supply of goods may increase their price in the

    52

market. Again, excess production and supply may also lead to fall in

prices of the product. By maintaining a balance of supply of

goods, warehousing leads to price stabilisation.

PRECAUTION DURING HANDLINGAND STORAGE OF FERTILIZERS

Always store fertilizers in leak proof godowns constructed with

scientific design and having adequate plinth.

Hygroscopic and Non-hygroscopic fertilizers should be stored

    separately.

No cut and torn and slacked bags should be stored in the stacks.

Cut and torn bags should be stored separately and standardised

    as quickly as possible.

No hooks should be used while loading/unloading and stacking of

    fertilizer bags.

All doors and windows of the godown should be kept closed

during rains when relative humidity is high. Selective aeration

should be provided on clear sunny days.

All loose spillage of fertilizers should be collected daily from the

godown floor and kept in the bags separately.

Labourers working in the fertilizer godown should wear gum-

boots. Nobody should enter the godown with bare feet.

Fertilizer should not be stored with foodgrains or other edible

    commodities.

Floor of the godown should be periodically repaired for damages

    caused due to corossion.

  • 8/2/2019 Shailesh`s Project

    61/61

All metallic parts like shutters, trusses should be periodically

    painted with anti-corrosive paint.

While opening the godowns for transactions, nobody should enter

the godown immediately and wait for some time to avoid ill effect

    of chemical gases.

Special care should be taken for hygroscopic commodities which

are likely to be damaged due to humidity in the atmosphere.

During rainy season stacks of hygroscopic fertilizer should be

preferably covered with black polythene covers or film.

Jumbo stacks are recommended for fertilizer storage as this helpsin minimising the exposure of fertilizers bags to the atmosphere.

No fertilizer bags should be stored without proper dunnage. It is

recommended to use wooden crate as ideal dunnage. However, in

the absence of wooden crates, two layers of bamboo mats with a

layer of black polythene film should be used as dunnage.

Special care needs to be taken during rainy season to prevent

damage to the fertilizer bags due to roof leakages. Leakage points

should be promptly repaired and plugged.

Hygroscopic fertilizer should not be stacked over 4 meters height

as this may cause lump formation in the bottom layers.

Timely turn over of fertilizer stock should be ensured to that their

    quality is maintained.

Non-standard fertilizers should be stored separately with proper
