Now this is what you shall oGer upon the altar: two yearling lambs each day, regularly. You shall oGer the one lamb in the morning, and you shall oGer the other lamb at twilight. (Shemot 29:38-39)

We are obligated to do four special things on Purim: to read the megillah, to send gifts to two poor people, to have a feast, and to send two gifts to at least one friend. Of these four obligations, the last three apply on Purim day, only. However, the first obligation, the reading of the megillah, must be performed during both Purim night and day. Whether it’s shofar on Rosh Hashana or eating matzah at the Seder, most mitzvot apply either during the night or the day – but not both. Why is megillah diMerent from all other mitzvot?

Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein (1829-1908) explains that the reading of the megillah is like a blessing of thanksgiving (OH 587:2). We thank and praise God for the miracle of our deliverance, similar to commandments like prayer and the twice-daily Shema. Our Torah portion describes the daily sacrifice in the mishkan, which would also take place twice a day. Some commandments must be regularized in our lives, as they reflect more than a singular experience. They reflect an ongoing relationship with God’s presence.

As we celebrate Purim, we should all (men and women) make sure to hear the megillah at night and during the day. As we listen, we should feel in our hearts a feeling of ongoing gratitude. We experience life with God’s blessing, as individuals and as part of the Jewish people. We are surrounded by miracles. As we face a world with so much legitimate worry and risk, may Purim inspire us to take a step back and recognize God’s unending presence and love.
