Genesis r.8:zo-32 / Colossians z:az-L4l Luke t 1:1-13

Jesus mustn't ha,ve been thinking about ten-month-olds when he

suggested children would ask for safe items like eggs or fish. My daughter'sinterests include electrical outlets, fan blades, and knives, so I think she'd be

happy if we gave her a scorpion or a snake. We spend a good amount of timetelling her no, much to her chagrin. Sometimes she listens, sometimes she

dse,s#t; and it doesn't seern to stop-her-from rA/anting to touch the same

unsafe objects in an hour.

Our daughter can't see the big picture as we, her parents, do. We can see

that allowing her to stick her hand in a fan or outlet would lead to dreadfulconsequences; she sees only that we're denying her curiosity and fun.

And so it is with prayer and God. God can see the big picture-what is

ultimately an egg for us versus a scorpion, what will bring us most abundantlife. We, with our limited human minds, cannot. And so deep trust is

required-we can pray for what we want and need, but we mustfundamentally trust that God knows best what we need.

Jesus says that all who seek will find and all who ask will receive. But he

doesn't say "all who seek will find exactly what they are seeking" or "all whoask will receive specifically what they requested." Jesus isn't Santa Claus

working from our list of requests.

He simply says they will "find" and they will "receive." There will be an

answer-but it's God's answer, not ours. Can we trust that God has the bigpicture in mind when he answers?

W$RLD YCUTH DAY-,*.ngeius Message by Pope Francls (-.luiy 26]

". . .today, as Brazil and the Church around the world celebrate this feast of SaintsJoachim and Anne, Grandparents Day is also being celebrated. How importantgrandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritagewhich is so essential for each and every societyl How important it is to haveintergenerationalexchanges and dialogue, especially within the context of the family.. "Children and the elderly build the future of peoples: children because they leadhistory forward, the elderly because they transmit the experience and wisdom of theirlives". This relationship and this dialogue between generations is a treasure to be

preserved and strengthenedl In this World Youth Day, young people wish toacknowledge and honour their grandparents. They salute them with great affectionand they thank them for the ongoing witness of their wisdom. And now, in this Square, in all the surrounding streets, and in those homes that areexperiencing this moment of prayer with us, we feel like one big family, and we turnto Mary, that she may protect ourfamilies and make them places of faith and love inwhich the presence of Jesus her Son is felt."

de ar PAD Rf,

O Mony people consider themselues Catholic euen tlnugfu they miss

Mass regularly and practice artifuial birth control. Shouldn't those

. people be nld tu leaue the Church? Wouldn't we be better of ifthere werefewer but better Catholics?

- You're asking a very good question: What does it

A mean to call yo=urself Ro-rn Catholic? The word cathalic

(lowercase c) means "universal," which in turn means theCatholic Church is inclusive. But we do have limits.Certain things define us as Roman Catholic, like ourbelief in the sacraments and the Trinity.'We need those tocall ourselves Roman Catholic. But before we startexcluding people for other reasons, we need to look at

Scripture. John 4:742 tells the story of the Samaritanwoman at the well. Matthew 9:10 tells us, 'TVhile [Jesus]was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinnerscame and sat with Jesus and his disciples." In Matthew2L:31, Jesus says, "Tax collectors and prostitutes are

entering the kingdom of God before you."

As I reread these passages, I thought, Jesus wanted toinclude too many people in the kingdom of God. That'sprobably what got him in trouble with the authorities.'We must be very careful when we start drawing up lists ofwho shouldn't be part of the Catholic Church. Someonemight thinkyou need to be left out too.
