STEWARDSHIP - Off and Running; (Continued from last week) She heard the call and her thoughts (and steps) immediately were directed toward the church. Maybe that's one reason why pancake races are still held today. Of course, they're fun to watch and to participate in. But the underlying message is that we must respond to God's call at once, despite our other activities. (To be continued next week)

PRAYER FOR THOSE SUFFERING RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION

Good and Gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered violence and death for the salvation of the world, listen graciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for their faith. In Your great mercy, comfort them with the Holy Spirit. Give them strength in the face of hostility and courage in the face of trial. Open the eyes of those who raise their hands in violence to see others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father of all. By Your grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love. Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of Peace, may justice and peace prevail so that all may have the freedom to worship you, the one true God, and Him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS 2015 - If you would like to receive a statement of your 2015 contributions to our parish, please call Susan at the parish ctr. (201-845-9566 x 113) and leave your name, phone number, and address, and one will be sent to you. Thank you.

There will be no Mother of Perpetual Help Novena on Wednesday, February 10th

Deacon Joseph L. Mantineo

WHEN I WAS A CHILD (Part 2) My brothers and sisters, I would like to make some

suggestions we might all consider not only during Lent but for the rest of our lives so that we are not criticized by Jesus as He did in the Temple in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago. “My house shall be a house of prayer…” (Mathew 21:13) “…stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” (John 2:16)

By not talking to our friends around us or behind us, not only can we focus on praying to God in thanksgiving; we also create a silence which allows others to pray as well, instead of being distracted.

During the Mass we are always focused on God, listening to Him speak to our minds, hearts and souls in the Scripture readings.

Turning our attention from the Liturgy of the Word to the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we approach the altar knowing that we are going to receive, in the form of a Consecrated Host and Consecrated wine, the very Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

It was at the Last Supper, it has been for over 2,000 years, it is today and will always be the living Jesus, who will strengthen us because Jesus Himself, the Word made Flesh, forgives our sins and gives us the strength to resist mortal sin. It is the very channel of eternal life: Jesus Himself.

Remember that it is Jesus who tells us: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in Me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will have life because of me.” (John 6:53–58).

It is very beautiful to see so many come to Jesus. However, please know that if we have committed mortal sins, we are not in a state of grace. We must be in a state of grace! This is an absolute requirement which can never be dispensed. To receive the Eucharist without sanctifying grace in our soul profanes the Eucharist in the most grievous manner.

“Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the Body and Blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself…. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Cor. 11:27–29).

A mortal sin is any whose matter is grave and which has been committed willfully and with knowledge of its seriousness. Scripture contains lists of mortal sins (Gal. 5:19–21). The only way to remove mortal sin is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. For further information on what constitutes a mortal sin, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

(Part 3, Article 8 SIN pp 505-511, paragraphs: 1849-1876; text or online at: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catechism/catechism-of-the-catholic-church/epub/index.cfm#)

After receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus take the time to pray, to talk to Him as He becomes one with us. It certainly is not a time to talk to our friends on the way back to the pew, or leave before the final Blessing!!

Finally, consider staying after the Mass to continue to thank Jesus for coming to us in the Holy Eucharist. It is a time to be thankful. After receiving Jesus into one’s own Body and being drawn more closely into His, how could one do any less?

So, my brothers and sisters, I share this as a way of life not for 40 days, but rather for as long as we live. I share it out of human love, which is like a grain of sand in a desert in comparison to God’s love for each of us which is like all the grains of sand in the world. I gratefully thank Fr. Larry for allowing me to speak to all of you through this column. In His Holy Name, Dcn. Joe

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES – OPERATION RICE BOWL HUNGERING FOR THE JOURNEY

Join our parish community in CRS Operation Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that will help you experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. As we, the global Church, continue our prayerful walk through this Holy Year of Mercy, it is especially appropriate to come together in prayer as a parish family and domestic family this Lent, reflecting on how we can live this call to mercy more abundantly. Beginning today, the CRS Lenten Rice Bowl boxes will be available at the entrances of our church for you to take and place your monetary sacrifices throughout the season of Lent. The students in the Religious Education program will receive a Rice Bowl as well. Use your cardboard CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Be sure to visit crsricebowl.org to watch videos of the people and communities whose lives your Lenten gifts are changing through CRS Rice Bowl. REMEMBER, WHAT YOU GIVE UP FOR LENT CHANGES LIVES!

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK - 2016 LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence "substantially", or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14, 2016 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22, 2016.

*Canon 920, § 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

Bishop Robert Barron’s PRIEST, PROPHET, KING

The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King, you’ll discover Jesus as the Anointed One–the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Bishop Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. Through this deeply biblical program, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission, received when you are baptized “into Christ.”
