Crianza Rioja Bodegas Luis Cañas 2011, Spain£13.99

A Crianza which has spent 12 months ageing in wooden barrels, which are used to give a really smooth mouthfeel. The aroma is gorgeous and enticing which leads to ripe cherry fruit, sweetly spiced dried fruits and chocolate flavours. Very well put together!

Ideal with meat paellas, roasted poultry or Spanish cured meat.

Rioja is Spain’s most famous region. With a worldwide reputation and years of winemaking history, it produces some of the best traditionally aged wines in the world, often made by wonderful family producers such as Luis Cañas.

The Cañas family have devoted their lives to winemaking for over two centuries. Current owner Juan Luis is using a combination of modern technology and traditional know-how to craft classic, honest Riojas with a modern twist.

Luis Cañas believe that the best wines are made only from the best possible grapes. With 350 hectares of outstanding vineyards split across 870 different plots, there’s plenty to choose from! Each plot has its own personality and is used for different wines according to its characteristics.

Food is a big influence into the style of wines crafted by Luis Cañas too. Juan Luis says, ‘If I only ate salads, I would not make the wines I do.’ So the wines lend themselves to many culinary delights found in and outside of Spain today.

RIOJA ROCKS!

Rioja Reserva Bodegas Luis Cañas 2009, Spain£17.99

A very typical Reserva Rioja. As it has been aged for 18 months in wooden barrels, it takes a more grown up approach than the Crianza. It’s more serious with incredible concentration of mellow ripe fruit.

Perfect to complement steak, soft casseroles and cheese.

Rioja Reserva ‘Seleccion de la Familia’ Bodegas Luis Cañas 2006, Spain

Year in, year out, this wine consistently nails it. It’s downright

delicious, not to mention rich, smooth and elegant. You couldn’t possibly squeeze more fruit flavour in if you tried!

Best served with pasta dishes, roasted lamb and beef, stews and poultry.

Burgundy has always set the benchmark for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It has become the Holy Grail for winemakers to compete with this quality and produce wines that make you think of Meursault, Montrachet and Vosne Romanée, whilst remaining loyal to their roots. Well we have two fantastic family run estates

who are doing just that. Let us introduce you to Neudorf Wines from Nelson in New Zealand, and Hamilton Russell from Hemel-en-Aarde in South Africa. You will be able to taste these wines from our tasting machine from 25th September - 2nd October.

It’s time to challenge Burgundy!

HAMILTON RUSSELLHamilton Russell was established in the 1970s in Hemel-en-Aarde, a cool climate region close to the sea. Tim Hamilton Russell bought the land before any winemaking had happened in the area and decided to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, for which many people thought he was crazy! Tim is now regarded as pioneer of the area which is seen as one of the Cape’s most exciting wine producing regions. The estate was taken over by Tim’s son Antony in 1991, who is producing wines that are amongst the most iconic in the world.

Chardonnay Hamilton Russell 2014, South AfricaNow £20

Hamilton Russell craft wines with length and complexity – this is no exception. Ripe pear and lime fruit aromas lead to a textured, creamy mouthfeel that has intensity and minerality.

Pinot Noir Hamilton Russell 2014, South Africa£31.50

Dark, spicy and complex perfumes lead to sheer richness on the palate. Not overtly fruity but it’s soft with wild sweet strawberry flavours and hints of alluring savoury characters.

The finest leg of lamb you can buy!

Pinot Noir ‘Tom’s Block’ Neudorf 2012, Nelson£25.95

This has to be New Zealand’s finest Chardonnay. Truly seductive with a complex medley of flavours including rich stone fruits, fresh baked bread and cashew nuts. You’ll also find depth, structure, balance and length which will enable this wine to live happily in your cellar, until you want to crack it open.

Seabass or creamy dishes.

It’s time to challenge Burgundy!

NEUDORF WINES, NEW ZEALANDWe were fortunate to meet Tim and Judy Finn recently, owners of the Neudorf wine estate in Nelson, on New Zealand’s South Island. Tim and Judy were pioneers in Nelson, the sunniest region in New Zealand, where they are now producing beautiful wines. The story began in 1978, when Tim and Judy decided that they wanted to make wine, despite their limited experience and the New Zealand fine wine industry being fairly non-existent at the time. Tim trained in animal behaviour and Judy came from a journalism background, so it was a new adventure to say the least! But as they say - ‘We did have youth (temporary), self-belief (unwarranted) and friends!’Their determination paid off and now over 30 years on, they have a set of wines that are amongst the most highly regarded throughout the world.

1. Dourosa Tinto Quinta de la Rosa 2012, Portugal£11.99*

A really good introduction to the Douro, as it’s a lighter style that shows the kind of lively red cherry fruit flavours that this region is capable of producing.

Italian food or white meats.

2. La Rosa Reserva Douro Branco Quinta de la Rosa 2014, Portugal £15.75

A delicious white packed with rich tropical and citrus fruit. Intense yet fresh with a slightly spicy finish.

Enjoy with fish, pasta and salads.

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of Portugal’s Douro Valley, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family along with the aid of the talented winemaker Jorge Moreira.

La Rosa is blessed with vineyards of spectacular quality, which begin at the bank of the Douro River and rise 450m to the towering top of the mountain. From the river’s edge to the top, there are many different microclimates – this makes grape growing incredibly hard work but adds variety and complexity to the wines.

La Rosa and the Bergqvist family are special. In many ways they represent what the Douro is all about... pride, courage, tradition and the determination to produce the

finest wines in one of nature’s most difficult climatic

conditions.

3. Douro Tinto Quinta de la Rosa 2012, Portugal£15.50

Full bodied and elegant with bright fruit and a wild herby character. Plus, as its aged for 5 months in old French barrels it has a really silky feel.

Holden Manz was founded in 2011 by Englishman Gerard Holden from Lancashire and his partner Migo Manz.

Gerard’s love affair with wine began at the mere age of 13, when he went on a French exchange trip to Champagne working in the vineyards and cellars, whilst Migo is an artist but loves fine wines. One visit to Franschhoek was all it took for the couple to fulfil their lifelong dream of purchasing a wine estate – a 17 hectare property overlooked by magnificent mountains, which stand guard over the beautiful valley below.

The couple are lovers of the French way of life, so the wines have a distinct French influence but are still true to their South African roots.

Hello, Holden Manz!

A Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is packed full of fruit flavour. Soft cassis, tobacco and spice flavours with a dollop of plum fruit on the finish. The French name Vernissage was chosen out of their love of art, as it means a preview of a new art exhibition.
