September 21 - 23, 2015 COEX, Seoul, Korea

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am delighted to welcome all the

participants to the International Conference of the Korean Society for Molecular and

Cellular Biology (KSMCB) that will take place at Seoul, South Korea from September

21 to 23, 2015. The conference will give you a platform to broaden your knowledge,

exchange ideas and technologies on topics in cellular and molecular biology, and serve

the opportunities for networking among participants. The conference will be held at

the COEX convention center, which is located in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul's

business, entertainment, shopping, or culture district. d

The scientific program includes the Nobel Laureate lecture, three Plenary Lectures, Presidential Lecture, and 25

symposia focusing on the latest research breakthroughs. In addition, a poster session will be arranged for young

scientists to present their research progress. This year, we are pleased to have Dr. Michael Levitt (Stanford

University, USA), Dr. Chrispohe Benoist (Harvard Medical School, USA), Dr. David J. Anderson (California

Institute of Technology, USA), and Dr. Douglas E. Soltis (University of Florida, USA) as plenary lecturers and

Dr. Hee-Sup Shin (Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Korea) as the inaugural Presidential lecturer. In

addition, more than 150 world-class scientists from domestic and foreign institutions will introduce cutting-edge

studies in the symposia. A symposium on research ethics will also be held.

There will be a series of ceremonies for the Academic Research Awards, such as the KSMCB Life Science

Award, the Molecules & Cells Award, the Macrogen Scientist Award, the Ilchun Memorial Lecture, the

AMOREPACIFIC Great Global Next Generation Research Award, the Excellent Doctoral Thesis Award

supported from the Seoulin Company and outstanding oral presentation awards to young international participants.

In addition, many companies and industries in the field of bioscience will participate at this conference for the

exhibition of research materials, biotools, and equipment.

We are confident that this conference will provide to all the participants with the most updated information on the

latest scientific advancements and valuable opportunities to exchange the ideas and launch future collaborations.

I look forward to meeting you at the International Conference of the KSMCB in Seoul, Korea this September.

Sincerely yours,

Sang Yeol Lee, Ph.D.

President, KSMCB

Dr. Hee-Sup Shin's group has been studying neural mechanisms underlying various behaviors through analysis of a group of genes involved in control of intracellular calcium in neurons. Those include voltage gated calcium channels, sodium/calcium exchangers, and phospholipase C-beta enzymes. Especially, he has elucidated the physiological role in vivo of T-type Ca2+ channels in control of the thalamocortical circuit. Recently his group has revealed the critical role of the mediodorsal thalamus in control of fear memory extinction, and the thalamus-ACC circuit controlling empathy fear in the mouse. They continue to study the role of the thalamus in cognition and sociality.

Born in South Africa 1947, MichaeI visited London aged 16 to be profoundly influenced by John Kendrew's 1944 BBC TV series "The Thread of Life". After a BSc in at King’s College London and a year with Prof. Shneior Lifson and a PhD student Arieh Warshelt the Weizmann Institute in Israel, MichaeI joined the Laboratory of Molecular (LMB), Cambridge, in 1968 . His PhD thesis on Protein Conformation Analysis described use of classical force-fields and introduced energy refinement.

Michael went back to Israel as an EMBO postdoc with Lifson. Collaboration then with Warshel resulted in new multi-scale approaches to molecular modeling: Coarse-grained models that merge atoms to allow folding simulation and hybrid models that combine classical and quantum mechanics to explain how enzymes works by electrostatic strain. In 1974, MichaeI returned to LMB for three years, spent two years with Francis Crick at Salk and seven years at Weizmann, before moving to Structural Biology at Stanford from 1987. His diverse interests have included RNA & DNA modeling, protein folding simulation, classification of protein folds & protein geometry, antibody

modeling, x-ray refinement, antibody humanization, side-chain geometry, torsional normal mode, molecular dynamics in solution, secondary structure prediction, aromatic hydrogen bonds, structure databases, and mass spectrometry. Current postdocs work on protein evolution, the crystallographic phase problem and Cryo-EM refinement. While enjoying membership of the Royal Society and the National Academy, MichaeI remains an active programmer, a craft skill of which he is particularly proud. His post-prize ambitions are two fold and likely inconsistent: (1) Work single-mindedly as he did in the mid-1970’s on hard problems and (2) Help today’s young scientists gain the recognition and independence that his generation enjoyed. Married in 1968 to Rina, an active artist, they have three children and a rapidly increasing number of grandchildren, all of whom help him stay more-or-less normal.

Dr. Shin was appointed as the first National Honor Scientist by the Korean government in 2006. Prof. Shin is a member of the National Academy of Science, Republic of Korea since 2010, and is a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Science, USA since 2019.
