It is an occasion in the life of our church where we set aside a special time to come before the presence of the Lord guided by music, praise, thanksgiving, prayer and quiet reflection to renew our commitment to Him individually and corporately. It will be geared around the theme of “Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs.”

We had a fantastic start to our new school year! The classrooms are at full capacity with
excited students and more students waiting for an opportunity to come join us. Thank
you to all our parents, teachers and church staff for their wonderful support. We would
like to welcome two new teachers to our staff. Susan Calderazzo and Amy Ward will be

English as a Second Language Ministry
Dot Taylor, Director ESL
Welcome Back! ESL welcomes our teachers and staff and friends from El Shaddai and the community who want to learn English. The first class day is September 6th with classes starting at 9:30am and 6:30pm. We are scheduling seven classes with our enthusiastic staff of about 30. New students will register at the first class. Although we don't know how many will attend we are expecting about 60 students. All of our teachers and volunteers are returning and we have several more - enough to expand our programs and add three new classes. We have been busy this summer with recruiting volunteers and meeting to discuss text materials and new classrooms. Eight of our teachers have committed to attend the English Language Missions State Conference for training for ESL on September 8th - 10th. We are so excited with our dedicated and excellent teachers and staff. We have posters to advertise our classes. If you have a place, business or organization where these could or should be displayed please let me know. Please keep our ESL ministry in your prayers. Dot Taylor, Director

The Night of Worship theme, “Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs,” is taken from the following passage: “Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:16-17, ESV). Worship is
expressing with both our LIPS and our LIVES that God is more important than anything or anyone else. Worship is
not a spectator sport—it requires participation. It must engage the heart. Idle worship is just as dangerous as idol
worship. This is what the prophet Isaiah had in mind when he says, “These people come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules
they have been taught” (Isaiah 29:13, NIV). Jesus echoes this in the Gospels when speaking of the Pharisees (see
Matthew 15:8-9). We can become so familiar with our method of worship that we are not engaged. A night of
worship seeks a time of renewal and commitment to worship and love God with all our whole heart, soul, mind and
strength. Worship renewal is a key component to revival.
In our summer small group Bible study on worship, we discussed and defined these terms. I would like to share
them.
PSALMS – Songs taken directly from the Word of God, also called Scripture songs. God composed the words;
people compose the music. It could even refer to modern songs, which use words from the Scriptures (in
whole or part). Some examples of this would be: “As the Deer” (Martin J. Nystrom from Psalm 42), “Whom
Shall I Fear” (Chris Tomlin from Psalm 27 and Romans 8) and “How Good It Is” (Tommy Walker from
Psalm 147).
HYMNS – Songs sung to God or about God and involve more detailed statements about theology. Although
many refer this term narrowly to hymns composed within the last two hundred years, it actually goes back
much further to first century Greek usage and also incorporates more modern hymns, such as composed by
the Getty family. The Greek term hymnos refers to celebrating God in a song of praise. Some examples of
this would be: “A Great a Mighty Wonder” (7th Century Greek Hymn, trans. by John Mason Neal in 19th
Century), “How Great Thou Art” (written by Stuart K. Hine in 1953) and “In Christ Alone” (written by Keith
Getty and Stuart Townend shortly after the events of 9/11 in 2001).
SPIRITUAL SONGS – Songs sung to the Lord or about the Lord that often include a word of testimony. These
songs are very personal and are experience-oriented. It is also referred to as a Spirit-led song intended to
elevate Christ and edify the saints (see 1 Corinthians 14:15). Some examples of this would be: “My
Story” (Jason Ingram and Mike Weaver), “Mended” (Matthew West) and “I Will Trust in You” (Lauren
Daigle, Michael Farren and Paul Mabury).
Many songs overlap one or more of these categories with different verses or choruses. A great example is the song
“10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)” by Jonas Myrin and Matt Redman. Verses 1 and 3 would align with the
SPIRITUAL SONG category. Verse 2 would be classified in the HYMN category, while the Chorus is taken straight
from Psalm 103 fitting it into the PSALM category.
Notice the Bible is silent on musical style. It is all about the message or content of the song. A musical style or
preference is not something mentioned in Scripture. That is something we bring to the text. Sadly, musical
style preferences have been the very thing that divides many churches, but spiritually mature believers know
better. God is not confined to our boxes.
Please join us for this wonderful time in the life of our church. Pray for all who are preparing, planning and
participating in it, specifically that it draws us closer to the Lord and one another. ...Pastor Scooter
MUSIC MINISTRY
“A Tempo” is a musical term instructing the musician to return to the
original tempo or beat. I think this certainly applies to our lives as
Christians. Sometimes we get out of sync with God’s redemptive
rhythm for our lives. Each day provides an opportunity for us to
return to walk in tempo with Him. ...Scooter Ward
