Four Mexican World War II pilots stand in front of a P-47 Thunderbolt. At the Sept. 19 De Len Symposium in Jaguar Hall, Mario Longoria, an author and researcher, will talk about Mexican airmen who served with the U.S. Army Air Forces.. Contributed photo.

Symposium looks at Hispanic involvement in World War IIWhen the Mexican president

asked a group of pilots and airmen preparing to fight with the U.S. in World War II if they had anything to ask of him, one man had a spe-cial request for his hometown.

The airman requested a school be built in his village while he was

away. The president agreed, and the airman was able to bring edu-cation to his community because of his military service.

This is just one of the stories that will be shared at the 29th an-nual De Len Symposium at the University of Houston-Victoria.

The event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 in Jaguar Hall Commons, 2705 Houston Highway. It is free and open to the public.

The theme for this years sym-posium is The Latina/Latino Ex-perience in World War II, and

Musica de ayer, de hoy y para siempre. (Music from yesterday, today and forever.)

Joe El Chiquito Carreon of Port Lavaca started an online radio station in the spring after a decade in the industry.

Carreon began broadcast-ing MusicaLatina.com from his home studio March 20.

I have radio in my blood, said Carreon. Anyone who has been in radio 10 or more years has that dream of owning their own station.

Todays technology made starting a radio station a reality.

You have no records or al-bums. Everything is computer-ized. We used to have to look through the albums for the songs. You can program the mu-sic now, he said.

This is where everything is going in the future. I thought about what was the cost to main-tain a radio station then versus now. Our costs are minimal, he said.

With $4,500 Carreon purchased a mixer, computers, the connec-tions and a professional broadcast microphone in order to get started.

Carreon also had the support of his wife, Angie.I give her a lot of credit. She said, If this is what you want I am

there to support you, he said.At age 32, Carreon began working at KGUL in Port Lavaca

Majic Tejano celebrates twenty years in VictoriaThe founder of KHMC Majic

Tejano 95.9 FM, the late Hum-berto Lozano Lopez had a special love for Victoria and the cross-roads area. He deeply believed in serving the community with public service and personal contact with the people of Victoria.

Wherever there was a need, he felt that God had entrusted him to help, with his radio station, the community he served. He instilled those values to his sons and daugh-ters and especially the second old-est son, Luis Homero Lopez, said Carlos Lopez co-founder of Majic Tejano 95.

Homero Homer Lopez has been at the helm as general manag-er of KHMC Majic 95.9 FM since 1995. Our father and I knew the importance to expand the Tejano brand of music back in the day.

We knew that our flagship sta-tion KMIQ Majic 105, which was established in 1989 needed a sis-ter station in Victoria and in 1995 Majic Tejano 95 hit the crossroads

    airwaves. Longevity, con-

sistency, dedication, commitment, loy-alty and, more im-portantly, faith were the ingredients we needed to succeed in this market. We put God first since day one in everything we did and do, and it is still at the forefront of our radio philoso-phy, stated Carlos.

We are thankful to our Majic Tejano fans, which have supported us all these years as well as the business community for entrust-ing us with their business, Carlos said.

The call letters of the station KHMC were chosen to reflect the owners who believed in this proj-ect. The K, H-Humberto Lozano Lopez, father; M-Minerva R Lo-pez, mother; and C-Carlos Lopez, son.

There were so many sacrifices that were made to start this station. Too many to recall but it was a la-bor of love to see it come to frui-tion. We are grateful to Jesus that continues to help us now and for the last twenty years.

As my father said very clearly when we went on the air ....and I quote Victoria...We are here to serve and not be served. Thank you for 20 years of Tejano. Gra-cias Dios y gracias Victoria, stated Carlos Lopez, co-founder of KHMC.

World Premiere of Texas before the Alamo in Mexico City

The World Premiere of Texas before The Alamo in Mexico will be at the Archivo General de la Nacion (National Archives) in Mexico City on Wednesday, No-vember 25, 2015. This was con-firmed last week in a meeting held with the Director General of the Archives.

The massive National Archives in Mexico City contain the origi-nal primary documents that clearly lay out the beginnings of Texas and pivotal events like the found-ing of the San Antonio Missions that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    This presentation in Mexico

City on Nov. 25 is a pivotal event for the production of the film and represents a significant summit for the true beginnings of modern Texas history.

The World Premier in Mexico City this November will follow a seven city tour of Texas before the Alamo in Spain, in October, which will include a broadcast of the film on television in Spain on October 30.

The film will also be screened in France on Nov. 2 in La Rochelle where Robert La Salle launched his expedition to Texas in 1684.

Texas before the Alamo will also be the kick-off event to the

22nd annual Center for Big Bend Studies Conference in Alpine, Texas on November 12. And the Film will be presented at the First Annual Conference of Educators and Historians from Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Texas at the University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico on September 11.

Finally, the film will be broad-cast as a 3-part/6-hour television mini-series in the summer 2016, to coincide with the 300 year An-niversary of Mission Concepcion, San Juan and Espada in San An-tonio, Texas; the 3 missions that were founded by the Domingo Ra-mon entrada to Texas in 1716.

two speakers will share unique perspectives of one of the most in-fluential times in modern history.

We chose this topic because World War II fascinates people, said Beverly Tomek, UHV assis-tant professor of history and sym-posium committee chair. Its one of the major events in U.S. history that really draws people in because its part of almost everyones re-cent family history.

Patricia Portales, a San Antonio College English professor who will speak first during the sympo-sium, has recorded the stories of three family members who were involved in the war both overseas and at home. The recordings are part of an oral history project at the University of Texas at Austin. Two of her uncles served in the war one in Europe and the other in the Pacific and her aunt worked as a welder in a San Antonio refrig-eration plant that was converted to build bom.

The stories we need to learn from World War II are not over, Portales said. There are still many stories to be told and collected. We normally think of soldiers who lost their lives, but there was such a web of people who contributed to the war.

World War II was a unique time in U.S. history because so many social conventions and prejudices were put aside out of necessity, Portales said. Women began work-ing jobs usually reserved for men, and minorities were allowed more rights in an effort to win the war.

General history usually tells us that the civil rights movement started in the 1960s, Portales said. Actually, it was World War II that propelled many people, es-pecially Latino Americans, to rec-ognize that they were being treated as second-class citizens after serv-ing their country, and that was no longer acceptable.

Portales presentation will look at the experiences of Latinas on the home front. History books typically say that women went to work for the first time, but women of color had a history of working long before the war, Portales said.

Women pretty much layered their roles in World War II, she said. They were mothers, patri-ots, laborers and resistors, and they were all of these things at once. They didnt just choose to be

a mother or a laborer. Even though the women had to return home af-ter the war, the effects played out strongly in their daughters who saw what was possible.

That same shift in social con-ventions also was seen by men serving in the military, author and researcher Mario Longoria said. His presentation will focus on one of the lesser-known groups of La-tino servicemen a group of 300 Mexican airmen who served with the U.S. Army Air Forces.

A couple of Mexican oil tank-ers were sunk by German U-boats, and Mexico wanted to fight alongside the U.S., but relations between the two countries during that time were not good, Longo-ria said. Mexico signed a pact with the U.S. and offered troops. However, considering the cultural clashes and language barrier, it was decided to send pilots instead because they were more educated and many already had trained in the U.S.

The pilots first came to San Antonio, then went on to train in Brownsville, Victoria, Greenville and other places. They served un-der McArthur in the Philippines and other areas of the Pacific and were successful, Longoria said. However, their story is almost completely untold.

Mexico has a history that co-incides with the U.S., Longoria said. Its a shame that even our own people dont know our stories and history. When talking about an ethnic group becoming pilots and fighting in the war, everyone tends

to think of the Tuskegee Airmen. No one knew Mexico had pilots in the war effort. Its finally being added when it should have been part of the story from the begin-ning.

Mexican pilots initially had to deal with some racism, but mili-tary discipline prevented things from getting out of hand, and the Mexican and U.S. servicemen learned to work together, Longoria said.

Everyone did what they had to do, he said. It was a big ac-complishment and a fine example of people working together. I dont think this country will ever see that again. Some people call that the Greatest Generation. They pushed through a lot of problems and saw a lot of firsts in history.

As part of his presentation, Longoria will present artifacts and pictures of the Mexican airmen and other war events. Hes gath-ered insignia, medals, ball caps and even museum-quality models of the P-47 planes the pilots flew.

After the presentations, there will be a question-and-answer ses-sion. The event will open with a color guard, and local veterans are encouraged to attend.

The symposium is presented by the UHV School of Arts & Scienc-es and the De Len Club of Victo-ria. Named after Victoria founder Martn de Len, the De Len Club is a nonprofit organization dedi-cated to promoting business and encouraging civic participation to improve the quality of life in Vic-toria.

September 19, 1974 as a deejay. Before going into radio, Carre-

on was a store manager for con-venience stores in Houston. He moved to Victoria and worked for a grocery store, and he always lis-tened to KGUL.

The station advertised for a dee-jay. Carreons coworkers suggest-ed he apply for the position be-cause of his musical background.

Carreon plays keyboards, and he played in local bands with Calhoun High School classmates Raymond Moreno and Robert Ojeda in Lil Ray and the Highlights and with the Roberto Sustaita Orchestra.

He applied for the job on his day off and was hired.

What he loves about radio is communicating with the public, the music and the sales-all three he learned from former KGUL owner the late Dan Andrus.

I credit him (Andrus) with teaching me what radio is all about. Its not just playing records or music. There is a lot more that goes on. He taught me sales, Carreon said. He always thought give a customer repeat service be-cause that is where you make your salary, your living. You have to de-pend on repeat business.

Every morning Carreon greets his 500 to 600 daily listeners on his Face book page.

They say, Good morning, Joe, I give them a shout out. It creates that relationship between your lis-tener and you. They are there ev-ery morning he said.

Back when KGUL was 500-watt station, it broadcast over a 50-mile radius from El Campo to Bay City and from Rockport to Aransas Pass.

Today, Carron has listeners from Venezuela to Mexico City, Mon-terrey and Puebla in Mexico, to those in Florida and out to Califor-nia, he said.

Not a whole lot of people know were on, but thanks to social me-dia, we are getting our name out there. The feedback has been posi-tive, he said.

At KGUL, Carreon spun art-ists like Lil Joe y La Familia, Grupo Mazz, Latin Breed, Jimmy Edwards, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution and Los Cha-chos.

About 90 percent of those groups are still playing today,

Outstanding people living en el Barrio

    by Noemi Borrego Galvan

In early 1948, the families of Silver City all lived with very limited resources, yet managed to provide religious education to their children.

In our community, just like in other communities, there are al-ways some outstanding people that we take for granted. During the years 1948 - 1950, there were religious nuns from the Order of the Missionary Catechists of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

The nuns would come from Vic-toria (remember that Silver City was way out in the boondocks) ev-ery Saturday morning. We dont know if they had a car or if some-one would drive them or if they walked to the barrio. All we know is that between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. the nuns would walk from house to house (the homes were far apart) to remind the parents that their children would have to be at the Sanchezs by 10:30 a.m. for their Catechism classes and instruction for those who were going to make their First Holy Communion.

The classes consisted of learn-ing several prayers, the Ten Com-mandments, the Seven Sacra-ments, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Hipolito Sanchez lived at the corner of Cal-lis and Mitchell (I believe). They had a big family, but that did not

stop them from graciously opening their home to the nuns and all of the barrio children.

Mrs. Sanchez and some mothers would also help teach Catechism. During our break, Mrs. Sanchez would always serve cookies and Kool-Aid. I dont think the reli-

gious sisters, Mrs. Sanchez and others, who helped, were ever thanked by the children. The nuns, Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez, and others are now living in Heaven for their Evangelization but if their families still live here and read this mem-oir, Thank you.

El miedo Porque hay veces that the

smallest things make the loud-est noise or causan el miedo mas grande? And until this question is answered this will forever be the cause of problemas like the one I am going to contra (chismear).

A unos grandes amigos one of those small caused quite a big commotion and came only short minutes away from calling 911. Mis amigos son de un small town about 25 miles away from Victo-ria, traveling to Houston. I cant reveal their names because it is unfair and the policy of Chemo (actually Revista) is to protect the innocent.

One thing que si les digo es que ella es de Canada y el naci en Edna pero no le digan a nadie porque someone might realize who they are.

Esta es su historia (Chisme). They have a history of taking in all kinds of hurt, abandoned or maybe even runaway cats and dogs. And, they should be considered caregiv-ers, friends and protectors of those critters unable to do it for them-selves.

Una tarde, after work, they were enjoying their evening at home when out of nowhere appears an uninvited guest, in her words a huge and lost furry fellow. It had to be big and probably ugly be-cause she said so.

Nonetheless, it made her scream and he did the same not because of the intruder but because she was hollering in his ear, you know how

women are. Otro poquito de background on

the couple, they have two fero-cious looking but friendly guard dogs. The type of perro that youd think would have alerted the cou-ple of the intruders approach. Not these dogs, they were probably opening the door for the humon-gous violator of home privacy.

They also have three cats brought in to keep out those ami-gos and familia of el wonderful arriba, arriba Speedy Gonzales historys fastest ratn.

Again, another defensa for the house. Pero they are cool cats and she has them so spoiled that a mouse could probably come up to them, slap them in the face, pull their tails and they would turn around and let the mouse do it again. Thats how lazy these cats are.

That is what happened, with the wall of defense down, the uninvit-ed guest just came in the house and made himself at home. My friends tried everything get him out but he was very stubborn (terco).

They tried to get him out of the house but it would not leave. In fact, it decided to esconderse be-hind the sofa, behind the curtains and then with no shame it ran to

the kitchen and hid behind the oven range and behind cabinets.

Try as they may, nunca lograron capture or run the intruder off. In fact, el violador even made fun of them.

That became the final straw, the couple got ready to call for emer-gency back up help or maybe they should just call 911, they thought. Pero just as fast as it appeared, el intruder ran out and went on its merry way.

Mis pobres amigos could not sleep well that night just believ-ing that more intruders might get the notion that they too wanted to visit. More frightening was the thought of they deciding to stay awhile. After all, they realized that their home defense was a mere joke.

The next day, ella asked me what I would recommend. Y yo with my solve-all solution told her just shoot them all. My solu-tion is like most womens idea that everything can be solved with duct tape and a two by four.

Como digo yo, if you enter my domain, my palace, my home without permission, you will prob-ably get shot.

And my friend was really dis-turbed with my answer after all, she said, But why, it was only a little mouse. Little mouse? When did the huge ferocious fur-ry fellow become a fluffy little mouse?

Estas mujeres de lo pequeo they make something big.

Pero como digo yo, The only good mouse is a dead mouse, even if they are related to Speedy.

gno, Solido, La Mafia, Intocable, Tejano Rose and Los Palominos to name a few artists, along with longtime artists.

In radio you dont play what you want to hear, but what the public wants to hear, Carreon said. Instead of having a certain segment of the audience listening you have a vast audience because people my age will listen when Lil Joe or Latin Breed come on, but the younger kids today listen when Siggno comes on. They are all listening for that one song or that one group that they want to listen to.

Carreon also does public service announcements, makes announce-ments about local and area events, birthdays and anniversaries, takes requests, does dedications and makes funeral announcements when he is on the air from 7 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Radio back then was a lot more personal and more involved, he said. We are on 24/7. It never shuts down.

Carreon would like to get more involved with the community events. He is considering broad-casting football games and high school events, not this year but in the next school year, like in the KGUL-days when he and co-host Fred Stokes did.

Carron would also like to bring different segments of the popula-tion together through radio.

Nowadays, its a lot different than it was back then. Events were so far apart, but now you have Latinos who go to Anglo events, for example. I would like to get involved with that to advertise the event to everyone, not just to one segment, he said

Four months into broadcasting, Carreon want MusicaLatina.com to operate like a fully functional radio station.

Its like Mr. Andrus told me, If you have a good product, people will be there for you. Its grow-ing, he said. Radio consists of educating, informing, commu-nity service and sales. Those four things interact with each other.

Want to improve your community? Have a party!

    by Officer John Turner

It seems that lately, a major topic of discussion in the news is how to improve police/community relations. The answer is simple in theory but a bit more challenging in practice. In order to build a re-lationship with anyone, you must first begin a relationship. As luck would have it, a perfect opportu-nity has presented itself, as it has once every year for the past 31 years. National Night Out.

In 1984 National Night Out was created specifically to encourage police and community partnership as well as promote involvement in crime prevention efforts, build

camaraderie within neighborhoods and let criminals know that citi-zens taking a stand against crime.

What began as simple front porch vigils has evolved into a nationwide celebration involving events that include block parties, barbeques, parades, visits from first responders, youth events and safety demonstrations, all done to promote police /community rela-tions and reduce crime in the com-munity. What more could you ask for?

If you want to do something to improve the state of your commu-nity, start now by hosting a Na-tional Night Out party. It can be as simple as having a few friends

over while sitting on your front porch or as complex as blocking off a street and inviting all of your neighbors.

Its up to you and your imagina-tion. Officers will do their best to visit all of the parties that register with the Victoria Police Depart-ment Crime Prevention Unit. This

  • creates a perfect opportunity to begin meeting some of the officers who work in your city. This year, National Night Out is on Tuesday, October 6.

Perhaps, to encourage partici-pation this year, we can start a friendly competition. Everyone who hosts a party, ask your guests to bring some non-perishable food items to be given to the local food bank. The food can be given to the officers who visit your party and when weve tallied the results, the party with the largest donation can get an award and maybe some rec-ognition through local media.

In addition to National Night Out itself, on Saturday, Septem-ber 19, the Victoria Police Depart-ment will host the National Night Out Kick-off party. This not only brings attention to National Night Out but also gives you the oppor-tunity to meet local first respond-ers, discover what your commu-nity has to offer and enjoy some excellent entertainment at the same time.

If everyone did just a little to im-prove their community, the com-bined results could be awesome. If youd like to find out, start by having a National Night Out party.

John Turner is a Crime Preven-tion Officer for the Victoria Police Department. For any information on National Night Out, the kick-off party or other crime preven-tion topics he may be contacted at (361) 485-3811.
