Parish Mission and Vision Statements RevisedLast autumn, at the request of Bishop McKnight, Fr. Dave invited several members of our parish to began work-ing with the Parish Success Group to address two major goals for our parish: spiritual renewal and outreach to the community. The group has been named the Parish Steering Committee. With the support of Fr. Greg, the Steering Committee has written a new parish mission and vision statement to reflect the new focus on our major goals. (The current mission and vision statements were adopted in 1993 and 1997, respectively.)

Our New Mission: Love God, Love Others, Make Disciples

“This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" Jn 13:35

“Jesus says ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your

strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mk 12:30-31“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” Mt 28:19

These scripture verses show us Jesus’ call: love God, love others and make disciples. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops describes disciples as those who “make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ, no matter the cost to themselves.”

Our New Vision: To be a parish that guides, supports, and encourages its members on a journey of ever-deepening discipleship, and creates a culture of witness

Our vision specifies guiding, supporting, and encouraging. A parish cannot force its members along a path of discipleship, but it can point them in the right direction, provide resources that make it easier to say yes, and be the voice that calls them to more. Similarly, the parish cannotmake new members walk through the door, but it can build an inviting environment that helps newcomers connect and it can build up the skill of our parishioners to be witness to the truth and goodness of our faith.

Please visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website for a more detailed discussion of our call to evangelization. http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/new-evangelization/disciples-called-to-witness/culture-of-witness.cfm

If you have thoughts to share with the Steering Committee, please contact Bob Buehler at [email protected] or Debbie Priesmeyer at [email protected].

This article is the first in a series on this subject. A discussion of proposed initiatives will be in next weekend's bulletin.
