Preparing
• Request a MRSLI with experience of interpreting in mental health OR an experienced MRSLI.
• Prior to meeting client, discuss with interpreter aims of session and discuss communication, positioning, risk, breaks
• Decide what to do if interpreter does not attend
Tips for working with interpreters…
• Be aware of your non-verbal communication
• English will be 2nd language so writing is not a meaningful method of communication for most Deaf people - average reading age is 9 years (Powers, 1988)
Tips for working with interpreters…
• Speak to the client not the interpreter
• Interpreters might add information to questions – Deaf culture
• There will be a time lag between asking your question and the client receiving the question – don’t assume them nodding is saying ‘yes’
Tips for working with interpreters…
• Ask interpreter to inform you if they add extra information or have an additional conversation with the client.
• Focus on visual aspects and non-verbal communication
Working with Deaf People
• Use of language
• Understanding culture/misinterpretation
Access to services
