Background
Unveiled plans on 4 November 2009 Strategic
Positioning for the Future: Sembcorp Marine unveils
plans for a modern, work-efficient and integrated new
yard facility.
18 November 2009 Award of New Yard Construction
contract to Zhen Hua (S) Engineering: 4 VLCC
drydocks, wharves, quays and ancillary facilities
scheduled for completion by May 2013.
21 June 2010 Ground-breaking of new yard with
Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minster for Trade and Industry, asGuest-of-Honour.
Location of New Yard
Located at Tuas View Extension in the west ofSingapore, the planned 206-hectare new yard facility
is strategically located along the major sea lanes in
the Singapore Straits.
The 206-hectare new yard will be built in threephases. Phase I of the new yard spans 73.3 hectares
with Phase II at 34.5 hectares and the balance in
Phase III.
Phase I
The 73.3-hectare Phase I Sembmarine Integrated
Yard @ Tuas has commenced operations on 5 August2013.
Capable of serving a wide range of vessels and
rigs, including VLCCs, new generations of mega
containerships, LNG carriers and passenger ships,Phase I of the new yard is equipped with 4 VLCC
drydocks with a total dock capacity of 1.55 million dwt
as well as finger piers and basin lengths totalling 3.9 km.
The state-of-the-art new yard facility is designed to
maximise operational synergy, production efficiency
and critical mass with optimised docking and
berthing facilities, an improved dock and quay ratio,
a centralised work-efficient layout and integrated
facilities. This will sharpen our competitive edge toachieve greater productivity and efficiency to deliver
innovative, value-added and cost-efficient solutions
to customers.
The facilities at the new yard include a drydock
(YST D2) of 360m length, 89m width and a draft of
8.5m. This is the widest drydock in Singapore and
is designed to accommodate jack-ups and semi-submersible rigs.
Another drydock (YST D3) measuring 412m in
length and 66m in width with a draft of 11.0m, is the
longest and deepest ship repair drydock in Asia. It isequipped with an innovative intermediate dock gate
system and is capable of docking containerships of
up to 18,000 TEU, providing exibility to congure the
dock and allow smaller ships to dock in front while
other works are carried out at the rear. This translatesto greater cost-efficiency and better dock utilisation
during operations.
The natural deep waters at the new yard also enable
the installation of thrusters for semi-submersibleswithout towing the rig to sea, providing significant
savings for customers.
There is also a special reinforced load-out area foroffshore platforms of up to 20,000T.
To maximise the waterfront coverage in Singapore,
the yard is configured with three finger piers and a
basin ranging from 210m to 400m with maximum draftfrom 9m to 15m, allowing for ultra deepwater semi-
submersible rigs and cruise vessels to be berthed
without restrictions in the new yard.
Besides these operational innovations, the yard alsoredefines employee care with a new in-yard living
concept where employees live in self-contained
dormitories and accommodation within the new yard
premises. Comprising two phases of development,
the dormitories will be capable of housing almost9,400 employees when fully completed. The Phase I
precinct comprises 3 blocks of 7-storey dormitories
and 1 block of 7-storey apartments to house some
5000, complete with a centralised kitchen, sports
and recreational facilities, in-house laundry services
and other amenities and services to provide for abetter quality of life for employees. The convenience
of residing in the yard enables employees to have
sufficient time to rest and relax after work, translating
to greater productivity and job efficiency.
