TUAS – what is it?• Turku University of Applied Sciences (later TUAS) is one of the

leading universities of applied sciences in Finland.• Location: South-West Finland, main campuses in the city of Turku

(population 182 072 in 2013) and a campus also in the city of Salo(pop. 54 233 in 2015, location approx. 60 kilometers east of Turku).

• 9 500 students (Bachelor’s and Master’s degree) out of which 1 500 graduate yearly, 750 members of staff.

TUAS as a RDI operator• TUAS has over 30 research groups and more than 200 projects

in progress, approx. 100 projects are launched• Director of Research and Development coordinates and

manages totality of RDI activities at TUAS, each faculty has a RDI manager, each faculty has 4 heads of education and research and each research group has an RDI executive.

• Innovation Pedagogy as a basis for both RDI working and studying / learning / teaching at TUAS:

- learning and teaching corresponding to the needs of working life- learning by experimenting, from and with others, combining different

information sources and working life experiences in working life context, multidisclipinarily by applying a problem-oriented and goal-oriented approach (see more, a Prezi-presentation by mr. Martti Komulainen)

Arts Academy – arts, culture and media• 650 students out of which some are adult and master degree

students• approx. 70 members of staff• operating if 4 different campus buildings in the city of Turku• offers higher education in culture and arts in four programmes:

Arts Academy – as a RDI operator• altogether four different research groups:

- Art Education and Art Pedagogy (RDI executive Ms. Heidi Alppirinne)- aims at developing methods to support students’ working life oriented

pedagogical expertise and facilitate teachers’ adaptation to chancing job descriptions

- Contemporary Art (RDI executive Mr. Ismo Luukkonen)- aims at exploring and investigating various contemporary art practices and

challenges art practices & questions current issues in society- Arts, Health and Well-being (RDI executive Ms. Marja Susi)

- aims at applying and refining art-based & multiprofessional approaches and working methods in cooperation with fields of art, health care and well-being

- Film and Media (RDI executive Mr. Vesa Kankaanpää)- aims at creating projects where future concerns of media companies combine

with developmental objectives in research and education (focusing on cross media, technological innovations and new work practices)

Degree Programme of Film and Media• approx. 260-280 students in the degree programme yearly• Degree: Bachleor of Culture and Arts, 4 years (240 ECTS)• intake of students 70 per year • 3 different specialization areas:

- advertising (intake: 20 students per year)- animation and film (intake: 20 students per year)- journalism (intake: 30 students per year)’

• 15 members of staff• at the moment operating in three different campus areas in

Turku, but in August 2015 all specialization areas operate in one campus building (Lemminkäisenkatu)

Film and Media research group, examples of projects• Encounters - Encouraging Immigrants by Art to Seek Employment

- utilizes art-based and low-threshold / easy access methods- produces animation and documentary films in cooperation with young

immigrants and uses participatory methods- funded by the European Fund for the Integration of Third-country Nationals,

Finnish Ministry of the Interior • JOCID IV – Journalism for Civic Involvement, Democracy and

Development- a project aiming at enhancing the possibilities of journalism in African countries- e.g. aims at providing new tools for civic involvement and participation,

enabling the integration of cross-media education in the curricula of African partners and developing new practical teaching methods

- TUAS, Ghana Institute of Journalism, Polytechnic of Namibia and University of Iringa (Tanzania)

- funded by the North-South-South Higher Education Institution Network Programme

Film and Media research group, examples of projects• A 2-year RDI-project just starting is DIGITOPIA

- a national RDI-project, where the goals are to create and develop new, innovative journalism and advertising contents; related service and operating procedures and in-service training in co-operation with news media, advertising agencies and advertisers- has just started, opening meetings were held in the beginning of April 2015, a more active phase will start after summer 2015- funded by European Social Funding Programmes

• A project ”under construction” is LOG IN - a possible 3-year RDI-project (if funded, Erasmus+)- bringing together journalism, organizational communication,

advertising, film, animation, social media and gaming- uses cloud learning courses, media agency assignments and training

for trainers- an international project combining universities of applied sciences in

Europe
