As March wound down to April, the Miami Heat were streaking toward the all-time record of 33 consecutive wins, a feat accomplished by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. But you didn’t hear anyone in the Heat locker room getting too caught up in it.

That’s because the defending NBA champs have their eyes trained firmly on another prize, namely a second straight ring. And leading the chorus is none other than their best player, LeBron James.

James, now in his third year with the Heat after a high-profile divorce from his team of seven years, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his widely hyped Decision to join Miami in 2010, plays down the Heat’s recent streak, pointing out that it’s all in service of the higher goal.

“Our historic run is about winning championships,” he says. “That’s what we want to be known for.”

Over the first 27 games of that streak, the 28-year-old Akron, Ohio, native has been his usual dominant self, averaging 27 points, 8.1 rebounds and 8 assists per game – not far off his season averages of 26.7, 8.2 and 7.4. And there’s little doubt the Heat, with the NBA’s record at this writing, will wind up with the top seed in the East, as no team was within 10 games of them in the conference standings.

Sometimes, it takes a familiar face to put a face on a problem ... even one that is international in scope.

Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank is no stranger to championing social causes, and she takes up another as she and “My Left Foot” Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn play the title roles in the HBO drama movie “Mary and Martha” Saturday, April 20. Written by Richard Curtis (“Love Actually,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) and filmed largely in South Africa, the BBC and NBC Universal co-production tells the story of two very different women who unite to crusade against malaria after both lose sons to the illness.

Mary (Swank) is an American who takes her child (Lux Haney-Jardine, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) away from bullying classmates for an “adventure” abroad, and Martha (Blethyn) is an Englishwoman whose son (Sam Claflin, “Snow White and the Huntsman”) volunteers at an African orphanage. After both young men contract and die of malaria, their mothers meet and bond, then decide to take their message about the disease to the masses – and ultimately to a Washington, D.C., hearing.

James Woods also appears as Mary’s politically connected father in the film directed by Phillip Noyce (“Clear and Present Danger”).

“Obviously, what’s on the page is the most important thing in the beginning,“ Swank says, “but you follow it up with talent like that, in every corner, and it’s a no-brainer. It’s something you just jump at to be a part of.”

Swank has played mothers before (“Conviction,” “The Reaping,“ “Beverly Hills, 90210”), and that aspect of “Mary and Martha” largely drove her performance.

“I don’t think there’s anything worse in the world than losing a child,” Swank says. “I don’t have children of my own, but I have a lot of them in my life ... nieces and nephews, children of boyfriends. Still, it was all on the page here.”

The more common phrase may be “American as apple pie,” but the hamburger elicits much the same swell of patriotic pride in the heart of American diners.

Coincidentally, Pie ‘n Burger in Pasadena, Calif., offers those two items on its menu – with a few more things – and it’s featured in the premiere episode of the Travel Channel series “Burger Land” on Monday, April 15.

George Motz – who gained burger fame with his 2005 documentary “Hamburger America” – names the double cheeseburger and the butterscotch pie as his favorites at the diner, which opened in 1963.

From the Los Angeles area, the show heads to Miami and then off across America. Fans are going to see a lot of different ways to make a burger, but one thing’s for sure: The patties won’t be made of turkey, salmon, tuna or vegetables.

“Anything that’s shaped and formed into what looks like a beef patty,” Motz says, “to me, is disingenuous. You’re fooling yourself. I’d rather go eat a head of lettuce than eat a burger made of a fake soy patty.

“A hamburger can be described as chopped meat” – Motz prefers ground chuck steak, with 20 percent fat, and American cheese if it’s a cheeseburger – “that is cooked somehow and served on bread. That’s a hamburger.”

While some fast-food joints and restaurants tout their flame-broiled burgers, that isn’t Motz’s preferred cooking method.

“One of the hardest things to do,” he says, “and everybody thinks it’s the easiest way to cook a burger, is to take it outside and cook it on a grill. That is the most difficult and probably the most unrewarding.

“The easiest way to make a burger is on a flattop grill or a skillet. You can’t go wrong if you cook them on a flattop on the stove. One of the best ways is to put a cast-iron skillet on your outdoor flame and cook it that way. You have complete control. It’s all about temperature control.

“I just default to my favorite, which is the smashed patty on a flattop.”

Additional locations for where Motz seeks slices of burger heaven include Connecticut (where burgers can be steamed), Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York (where, Motz says, any sort of burger can be found), North Carolina (where coleslaw and chili may come piled on top), Texas and Wisconsin.

“In terms of the popularity of the hamburger,” Motz says, “it’s without a doubt the last American food invention of the last 100 years.”

Motz has his own burger specialty, the “Smashed Motz Burger.” It involves 80/20 ground chuck (cooked in a cast-iron skillet), squishy white buns (mass-market ones from the grocery store are just fine), and very thin-sliced Vidalia onions. You can saute the onions to put on top of the burger, or you can smash raw, thin-sliced onion into the meat patty at the beginning of the process.

“NOVA: BUILDING PHARAOH’S CHARIOT”

Given that title, and the fact that this is an episode of the PBS science series, it should come as little surprise that the reconstructing of the vehicles used by ancient leaders and warriors – see “Ben-Hur” – is the essence of the program. What’s especially fascinating is the number of supposedly modern features the original chariots incorporated, including anti-roll bars and shock absorbers. Archaeologists and engineers are among those who work on the project. ››› (Not rated)

“IRON MAN: RISE OF TECHNOVORE”

With Robert Downey Jr.’s third movie (or fourth, if you count “Marvel’s the Avengers”) about the superhero nearing release, this animated adventure also puts Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) through fresh paces. Maligned as the supposed reason a terrorist attack succeeded, he goes rogue – with some help from the Punisher (voice of Norman Reedus, “The Walking Dead”) – to stop a villain who’s created a biotech weapon. “DJANGO UNCHAINED”

No stranger to generating controversy with his work, Quentin Tarantino did it again – and earned an Oscar for his script, with another going to Christoph Waltz, who also had won best supporting actor for Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” – for his revisionist, often violent adventure set in the pre-Civil War era. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a freed slave whose quest to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington, “Scandal”) from a sinister plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) prompts him to team with a dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz). The word “transmedia” has been floating around for the past few years, even as the people who are using it are still trying to figure out what it means. On Monday, April 15, Syfy premieres a project that may help nail down that definition.

Launching simultaneously as a scripted Syfy TV series – with a two-hour premiere episode – and a Trion Worlds online game, “Defiance” tells a story that takes place in one fictional universe but on two fronts and in two locations.

“From the original handshake deal,” says executive producer Kevin Murphy, “to do something between Trion Worlds and Syfy, it’s been five years in the borning.”

“Defiance” takes place on a near-future Earth, where aliens collectively called the Votans came after their own star system was destroyed.

Initially allowed to settle in a colony in Brazil, the Votans became desperate and impatient with negotiations among Earth nations about their future and forced the issue by starting a war with humanity.

As a consequence, terraforming technology was released that radically altered the ecology and geology of Earth, leaving large

parts of it uninhabitable. After seven years, a cease-fire was called.

In this now-anarchic world, humans and Votans – who are not one species but seven different ones who lived on planets in the Votanis star system – work to live together in a variety of settlements.

The TV series focuses on the town of Defiance, which sits above the ruins of St. Louis, and the video game focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area.

Grant Bowler stars as Nolan, a former Marine who fought in the war and has now become a wanderer, accompanied by his adopted daughter, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), a member of the warrior Irathient race.

He arrives in Defiance, where he meets town bigwigs Datak and Stahma Tarr (Tony Curran, Jaime Murray), members of the elite race called the Castithans; mine owner Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene); idealistic mayor Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz); and her sister, local madam Kenya (Mia Kirshner).

Before long, Nolan essentially becomes the sheriff and soon learns that nothing in Defiance is simple or easy.

Do you still get recognized from “Law & Order” as Assistant DA Alexandra Borgia?

I did two seasons, and it was a very dark ending for me.Though you became known on TV, you do a lot of stage work. Where have you worked?

I just did six months on Broadway in “Clybourne Park.” And first we did it at Playwrights Horizon (off-Broadway). I did the Rubicon Theatre (Ventura, Calif.). Theater is such a special place for actors.Where are you from?

I was born in Alaska and grew up in Seattle.What was your reaction to reading the pilot for this?

It was very, very scary. I read it, then watched the pilot.How do you describe your character, Debra Parker?

I am an academic brought in to consult and lead in the investigation of Joe Carroll. I am in charge of Kevin Bacon’s character. I wonder what he would say to that. I am trying to keep that man in line.Are you a fan of this genre?

One of my favorite classes was horror in theater and psychology.Where and what did you study?

BFA in theater at Fordham.Does this show scare you?

I am not that easily scared because of knowing the genre, and I was so scared. What they do in the pilot is shocking.How do you see the show evolving over the season?

As it goes on, it feels like all of us are continuously getting our comeuppance.
