Shot to the Heart
Self-published author hits the mark with military romanceB J MC
Jen McLaughlin knew something special was
happening with her book the first week after
its publication.
Im very slow to get excited about things. Once I hit
[theNew York Timesbestseller] list, I had to sit down
for a minute, says the indie author. McLaughlins first
self-published romance novel, Out of Line (Jan. 2014),
went on to sell over 150,000 copies and hit #9 on the
Timese-book bestseller list, #16 on the Timescombined e-book
and print bestseller list, #28 on the USA Todaybestseller list,
and #1 in Amazons Contemporary Romance category. Its the
kind of success that indie authors dream aboutbut it didnt
happen without a lot of hard work.
While McLaughlin has had previous success publishing with
e-publisher Entangled under the name Diane Alberts, she want-ed to try her hand at writing a new adult military romance and
just had a feeling that self-publishing was the way to go.
Publishing both with a traditional digital publisher and as an
indie author, she considers herself a hybrid. I think its good to
have your name in different places, she says.
Once shed decided to go the indie route, she took the pub-
lishing process seriously and hired an editor, a cover designer,
and a publicist. It paid off, McLaughlin says. I wasnt going
to put out a book that was mediocre.
Finding an AudienceMcLaughlins Out of Line series, which now includes Out of Line,Out of Time (Dec. 2013), and Out of Mind (Apr. 2014), began
with her belief that there was a gap between the kinds of ro-
mance books that were being published and the kind she herself
would want to read, a gap she thought she could help to fill.
The married mother of four had been writing contemporary
romance for two years as Diane Alberts and had published 18
books since the release of her first,Kill Me Tomorrow, in October
of 2011.
But in 2013, the author, who lives in Pennsylvania, wanted
to try something new, and she decided to try writing under her
own name in a quickly growing category that straddles the line
between young adult and adult fiction and usually features
characters in their late teens or early 20s.
She decided to focus on the burgeoning niche of military
romance. Over two million American soldiers have served the
United States in both Iraq and Afghanistan, so McLaughlin
believed there was a large audience of younger womenfirst
and foremost the wives and girlfriends of veteranswho would
want to read about what it was like to date, fall in love, or be
married to someone who had served overseas.
As a result of the younger age group she was trying to reach,
she says, I was nervous of how steamy to make it. But you dont

category. I would text my agent the
numbers. She said I was going to hit
the [New York Timesbestseller] list.
It was her first book as a new adult
author and after its immediate suc-
cess she quickly published the secondbook in the series to keep the mo-
mentum going.
Capitalizing on the
Success of an Indie
E-book
Unlike traditional publishing where an author must often wait
more than a year to see her book published, McLaughlin was
able to keep control of the publishing schedule and release the
next book in the series just months after Out of Line. Out of Time
was released in December 2013 and Out of Mind, the third title,
publishes in April 2014. McLaughlin is following the same
editing, design, and publicity plan as for her first two titles.
The third book explores the challenges that many couples face
in attempting to have a normal, healthy relationship when one
partner is a veteran
who suf fer s f rom
post-traumatic stress
disorder. My goal all along was to
show how Marines change over
time, McLaughlin explains. Theygo over there, and they come home
and have to deal with what theyve
seen and blend in when they get
home. With an estimated one in five
veterans returning from war suffer-
ing from some form of PTSD, its a
message McLaughlin hopes will reso-
nate with her existing readers and one that might attract a new
audience.
At the end of March, McLaughlins agent concluded a deal
with Italian publisher Newton Compton for print and digital
rights to all three books in the Out Of Line series. McLaughlin
acknowledges that foreign rights deals for indie authors are rare
and is thrilled with the development. Weve kept our options
open for print, she says. If it was the right offer [from a tra-
ditional publisher], then absolutely.

Three Books on Writing Well
For Indie AuthorsA regular column from BookWorksB B K S
When it comes to writing well, some things
never changeat least not all that much.
Take the revised edition of
The Elements of Styleby
William Strunk Jr. and
E.B. White, for example.
In 1918, Strunk, a Cor-
nell University English professor, wrote
a 43-page style guide and called it The
Elements of Style. He published it himself,
for use in his classroom. His main point
was that writers should make every
word tell; or, as he put it in his 13th
elementary principle of composition: Omit needless words.
Fast forward to 1957, when one of his students, White, decidedto do an article on Strunk and his passion for lucid prose in the
New Yorker. White called Strunks little book a 43 page sum-
mation of the case for cleanliness, accuracy, and brevity in the
use of English.
Not long after that, some savvy editor at Macmillan com-
missioned White to update the little book (Strunk had died
in 1946), and when it came out in 1959, it sold two million
copies right out of the gate. Today it is often affectionately
referred to as Strunk & White and has sold more than 10
million copies in three editions. Why? Because it is smart,
sound, succinct, and feels as fresh and modern now as it did
the day it was written 96 years ago. If you need to brush upon the elementary rules of usage and composition or figure out
which pesky words you are most likely to misspell, this little
classic is a must-have.
On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfictionby
William Zinsser is another brilliant book that I think should
be on every writers shelf. First published in 1976, it too has
sold over a million copies. The Elements of Styleis a book about
pointers and admonitions, says Zinsser, whereas his book is
about how to write about people and places, science and tech-
nology, history and medicine, business and education, sports
and the arts and everything else under the sun thats worth
writing about.
Some of Bill Zinssers most helpful writing tips are:The secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest
components.
Clear thinking becomes clear writing: one cant exist without the
other.
If the reader is lost it is usually because the writer hasnt been
careful enough.
You are writing for yourself... if you go about it with enjoyment you
will also entertain the readers who are worth writing for.
The most important sentence in any article is the first one.
There is not much to be said about the period except that most
writers dont reach it soon enough.
Of course there are dozens of fine books on writing well, but
here is one more that particularly appeals to us.
Wired for Story: The Writers Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook
Readers from the Very First Sentenceby Lisa Cron explains that our
brains are hardwired for story, and good storytellers know clev-
er ways to take advantage of this. We think in story, which
allows us to envision the future, she says.
And what are some of the secrets of a good story? From the
very first sentence, the reader must want to know what happens
next. Cron says, The plot is not what the story is about. The
story is about how the plot affects the protagonist.
Cron also suggests that if writers cant see something theyhave written, they should go back and rewrite until they can.
She believes that this is the only way to get the reader to feel
the story, and if the reader isnt feeling it you can be sure she
wont be reading it for very long.
Whether you are writing fiction or nonfiction, describing
Jeters home run in last nights Yankee game or how your pro-
tagonist felt when she flubbed her lines in the first audition
shed had in two years, these books on writing well can give
you the equipment, the insights, and the courage you need to
make your book the best it can be.
