This Month’s Highlights

The Bletchley Circle, Season 2 Sundays, April 13–27 at 10pm

Four ordinary women use their extraordinary ability to break codes—a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, United Kingdom’s main decryption establishment—to solve crimes in post-war London. In these new episodes, the women reunite to help free a woman they believe is wrongly accused of murder, and enter the underground world of contraband and sex trafficking to thwart a plot.

The Dave Clark Five – Glad All Over,A GREAT PERFORMANCES SpecialTuesday, April 8 at 8pm and Friday, April 11 at 10pm

The Dave Clark Five were the first English group to tour America in May of 1964, and thus the first to spearhead the ensuing rock ’n’ roll British invasion. This GREAT PERFORMANCES special features newly-filmed interviews with Tom Hanks, Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Whoopi Goldberg, Dionne Warwick, Twiggy, and others—all sharing their memories of how the music and the cultural revolution of 1964 changed their lives.

Your Inner Fish Wednesdays, April 9–23 at 10pm

Learn how the human body became the amazing machine it is today. This cutting-edge scientific adventure reveals a startling truth: Hidden within the human body is a story of life on Earth, and the legacy of animals that lived millions of years ago. Based on the bestselling book by Neil Shubin, the series travels from Africa to the Arctic Circle to uncover the 3.5 billion year history of the human body—and how a colorful cast of ancient characters made us who we are today.

NOVA: Inside Animal MindsWednesday, April 9–23 at 9pm

The study of animal cognition reveals how animals understand the world around them. This revolutionary science uncovers animals’ remarkable problem-solving abilities and explores their powers of communication and even their emotions. In this three-hour series, NOVA explores these breakthroughs through the eyes of dogs, birds, and dolphins. Meet a cockatoo that picks locks, a dog that seems to use smell to tell time, and a dolphin that can “see” with its ears.

INDEPENDENT LENS: Muscle ShoalsMonday, April 21 at 9pm

Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America’s most creative and defiant music. At its heart is Rick Hall, who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, Hall brought black and white together in Alabama’s cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. In this joyful film, Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals’ magnetism and mystery, and why it remains influential.

AMERICAN MASTERS: A Fierce Green FireTuesday, April 22 at 9pm

This first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement chronicles grassroots and global activism from the 1960s to 2009. Inspired by the book of the same name by journalist Philip Shabecoff, it connects the major causes of environmentalism, from conservation to climate change. Narrated by Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Ashley Judd, Van Jones, and Isabel Allende, and informed by advisors such as biologist E.O. Wilson, the film features vivid archival footage and new interviews that shed light on the battle for a living planet.

The Address Tuesday, April 15 at 9pm

Ken Burns’ documentary tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermontl—the Greenwood School—where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice, and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of Greenwood, whose students, boys ages 11–17, all face a range of complex learning differences, the film also unlocks the history, context, and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address.

Peter Pan from the Milwaukee Ballet Friday, April 18 at 9pm

Michael Pink’s adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s most famous work is performed by Milwaukee Ballet. This production brings to life Peter, Tinkerbell, and the Darling children, as they soar to Neverland for escapades with the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily, the infamous Captain Hook, and a larger-than-life alligator. Thrill to brilliant choreography on stage and in the air, illuminating costumes, magical lighting, a lively score, and enchanting scenic design.

Live from Jacobs: New Music EnsembleThursday, April 17 at 7pm

“Emerging Composers” is the latest installment of live concerts from the IU Jacobs School of Music’s Auer Hall. The broadcast will feature three premieres of works from young composers, performed by IU’s New Music Ensemble under the direction of David Dzubay.

The music of doctoral student Erik Ransom, who has been awarded the Georgina Joshi Memorial Composition Prize commission, will be represented with A Prayer in Spring, a work for solo baritone.

The World of Tomorrow, by doctoral student Chris Renk, was a Dean’s Prize commission, and Through Cloudy and Cracked Lenses, by Jacobs School alumnus guest composer Kenneth Froelich, will have its first public performance.

Your host is WFIU’s George Walker.

Jazz Appreciation Month SpecialsApril is Jazz Appreciation Month, and WFIU’s Jazz Director David Brent Johnson pays tribute with live performances every Thursday this month on his weekday afternoon jazz program Just You and Me.

On April 3, guitarist Matt MacDougall stops by, while on April 10 the Postmodern Jazz Quartet holds court with its brand of classic hardbop.

Singer Janiece Jaffe is tentatively slated for April 17, and on April 24 guitarist Dave Stryker swings by to play and talk about the IU Jacobs School of Music Jazz Celebration Concert. This year the concert honors noted Indiana jazz artists Hoagy Carmichael, Wes Montgomery, and J.J. Johnson.

The month concludes with International Jazz Day on April 30, and Just You and Me will honor the holiday by featuring some of the most notable live performances in the history of jazz.
