VANDERBIJLPARK. - Another seri-ous mistake was apparently made bythe burial-registration offices of theEmfuleni Local Municipality, ELM.A two-year-old girl was buried in an

adult site in the Vanderbijlpark Ceme-tery.A funeral service for the late Refent-

se Melisa Makume was conducted bya Peacehaven funeral director (UsizweLwe Sizwe Burial Society) from herhome in Zone 13, on March 7.It has been alleged that the undertak-

er did not comply or have a proper cer-tificate to bury according to municipalby-laws. Rumour is that the municipali-ty is also on the wrong side of the law.The father of deceased Motheo Ma-

kume said they would only find closureonce the matter between ELM and theundertaker has been resolved.Noway can this be simply dismissed,

says Makume: “Who pays for the costof the body’s exhumation is in thehands of the two parties,” he said. The

estimated amount for the exhumation isR11 000.The family was immediately suspicious

when the undertaker drove to the site allo-cated for adult burials.“Ít is not our duty to find out whether

the undertaker has no proper documentsfor burial. We paid for a peaceful service,”says the father.Stanley Gaba, acting manager: Emfu-

leni Communication, confirmed that theundertaker was uncertified|:“All uncertified undertakers have been

warned that they face arrest should theybe caught conducting funerals at any mu-nicipal graveyards.”Gaba adds that an investigation will be

conducted. The Peacehaven director Mr K Seka-

bate said he complied with the require-ments of registration as Phadi Nkaoli Se-kabate (PNS):“I have done nothing wrong in this buri-

al. The municipality must get their housein order before they say certain undertak-ers do not comply.”

SEDIBENG. - The seizing ofMandrax tabletsworth more than R5-milliom resulted from ajoint Police operation. The joint operation was between the Direc-

torate for Priority Crime Investigation(Hawks) in Cape Town and Crime Intelligen-ce.Five suspects were arrested in the process. It was on Monday when members of the

DPCI and Crime Intelligence acted on infor-mation gathered about Mandrax tablets beingtransported from the south of Gauteng to theWestern Cape. The assistance of the Paarl K9Unit and the Forensics Department was enlis-ted in the extensive examination during thesearch and seizure of four suspected vehicles. At about 23:20, the vehicles were stopped

at the Huguenot Toll Gate and the Hawks sei-zed large quantities of drugs, which included117 000Mandrax tablets valued at R5,2milli-on, 10 000 Ecstasy tablets worth an estimatedR500 000,00 and an undisclosed amount ofcash. The exhibits were found hidden in thevehicles’ compartments. It was found that thefourth vehicle was not involved and was rele-ased. Three people, who have extensive cri-minal records, have been taken into custody. The three suspects, aged between 20 and 40,faced charges of possession and dealing indrugs when they appeared in Court on Wed-nesday. The Acting Head of the DPCI, MajorGeneral Mthandazo Ntlemeza, said this ope-ration again demonstrated the power of jointlaw-enforcement efforts.Ntlemeza: “Criminal networks seeking to

bring illicit drugs into our cities will continueto find it harder and harder to operate whenthey are up against the combined efforts ofmultiple law enforcement. We are well awarethat international criminals see Australia asa lucrative market for their drugs, but we willcontinue to work closely with our partners toidentify syndicates such as these and ensuretheir shipments never make it to the streetsof Australia.“It doesn’t matter how sophisticated the

concealment – and these drugs were particu-larly well hidden – law-enforcement authori-ties have access to the intelligence, tools andexpertise to find and seize them. Syndicatesof organised crime should know that we areprepared, willing and able to combine ourskills, resources and efforts to target them,”concludes Ntlemeza.

SEDIBENG. - Finance MEC BarbaraCreecy delivered her budget speech re-cently, allocating a total of R1.5 billionto fund development in the southern partof the province. This includesWalkervil-le, R82 phase 2 and Vereeniging. TheSouthern Development Corridor is an-chored around Sedibeng, the automotivesector and the knowledge-based econo-my.

Just over R1.5 billion has been set asi-de for the southern corridor to providehouses, services, new schools, rehabilita-

tion and the upgrade of roads, in particular theR82 Phase 2 between Walkerville and Veree-niging, and the maintenance and rehabilitationof health facilities.

The Department of Human Settlements hasset aside R892 million while R689.9 millionwill go towards the provision of houses andinstallation of services in Boikhutsong, theGoldenHighway, Evaton,Vereeniging, Ratan-da and Savanah City. The Department of Agri-culture will establish an Agri-Park linked totownship revitalisation near Sebokeng Zone10 Industrial Area.

Over the next three years, both provincial

and local spheres of government combinedwill spend just over R100 billion on physicalassets and capital transfers in the City Region.

The province itself has allocatedR38.2 billi-on for the delivery of infrastructure over the2015MediumTerm. “Wemust all remain con-cerned to increase the pace of infrastructurespending. I am happy, therefore, to announcetoday a new focus on infrastructure capacity,”she says. The Gauteng Provincial Treasury hasjust concluded the recruitment of engineersand quantity surveyors who will be workingwith departments on the infrastructure pro-gramme. “Also we are happy to announce that

the Department of Infrastructure Deve-lopment’s structure has been approved bytheDepartment of Public Service andAd-ministration (DPSA). “We are confidentthat these two initiatives will help ensurewe clear all bottlenecks related to infra-structure delivery in this province. We dothis because infrastructure investment isa priority for this government as a deter-minant of economic development andgrowth. It allows us to expand the provisi-on of basic services, contributes towardseconomic growth and strongly supportsjob creation,” concluded Creecy.

EVATON. - ‘More talk than action’ and ‘moretalk than service to the people.’

These were two of the accusations withwhich the ruling partywas lambasted. The lam-baster wasDemocraticAlliance (DA)Vaal Re-gion chairperson of Training and Develop-

ment, Councillor SimonNkosi. “With somuchhistory behind it and being the oldest township- established in 1904 - it pains me that Evatonresidents still use pit toilets,” said Nkosi. Headds, “The Evaton Renewal Project was esta-blished byGovernment to renew and regenera-te Evaton, to improve the quality of life of resi-

dents but, after 10 ye-ars and R48 millionspent to fund this pro-

ject, the quality of life is still a dream for resi-dents of Evaton.”

Residents still use pit toilets to help themsel-ves when nature calls. Unimproved pit latrinesare dangerous for kids to use and cause healthhazards for users.

Socially it is hugely damaging to residentsof Evaton.” Nkosi adds that in 2008, in herbudget speech as MEC of Housing, NomvulaMokonyane said on the Evaton Renewal Pro-

ject’s ‘Turn Around’ Strategy:“In Evaton, we have re-engineered the pro-

ject so that it begins to address the fundamentalissues of the people of Evaton. We have revie-wed our strategies and priorities such that theprocess of change can be accelerated and theoutputs thereof become visible,” said Nkosiquoting Mokonyane.

After StandardBankSouthAfrica andpriva-te companies funding the EvatonRenewal Pro-ject with more than R500 million the accelera-tion and outputs are not yet visible to residentsof Evaton.

FurthermoreNkosi said that, in the 2012Sta-te of the Province address, Mokonyane said:“We are currently working with the Sedibengdistrict and Emfuleni municipality to upgradethe bulk sewer line within the Evaton RenewalProject precinct thatwill then allow themunici-pality to install proper flushing toilets.”

Nkosi adds that, to date, Evaton residentsdream of it happening sooner rather than later. The sooner Emfuleni municipality deals withthis problem the better. Failing to do so putsresidents of Evaton in danger every day. ZaneleNjose of Evaton, a 22-year- old youngwoman, says, “we live on such failed promises and the-se were promises given to my parents andknown to us.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A heated debatewas sparked when the 2015 Human RightsMemorial Lecture was delivered by Sedi-bengDistrictMunicipality (SDM)Mayor Si-mon Mahole Mofokeng at the Vaal Campusof the NorthWest University, NWUonMon-day.Mofokeng said, “When I was asked to

come and give this Memorial Lecture I re-flected on three things.Firstly, I remembered the deaths of 69 pro-

testers and the serious maiming of 180 othersby apartheid security forces on March 21 of1960.This became a turning point in the struggle

for freedom and human dignity.“The unarmed protestors were protesting

against the hated ‘dompases’ – which racial-ly barred the majority of South Africans

from enjoying their full rights to citizen-ship.”Mofokeng sparked statements that the ra-

cial struggles were not matters of yesterday, but still struggles that learners - especiallyin Higher Learning Institutions - deal witheven today. While VUT deputy vice chancellor Pro-

fessor Gordon Zide agreed with the state-ments made, the words he chose were that‘change must be embraced by all’.Zide says, “In order for transformation to

happen, it needs to be embraced by all. Ourinstitutions need change-makers who are thepeople who can really form part of the driv-ing force behind mainstream transforma-tion.”On matters of education, Mofokeng says,

“There are still inequalities.According to research 35 percent of first-

years drop out after their first year in highereducation. There are many factors that causethis dropout such as financial aid and so on.”Mofokeng told students that the munici-

pality was doing everything in its power tohelp with financial aid to needy students:“As a municipality, we are doing every-

thing in our power to help students. You asstudents need to study in faculties that canhelp develop the Sedibeng region.” conclud-ed Mofokeng, adding that this region’s nichehad been identified as a water city (hydropo-lis) and that the mentality of people has tobe geared towards ideas of what can be donewith water in order to grow the economy inSedibeng. The event was attended by dignitaries of

the Vaal University of Technology (VUT),NWU, local municipalities, the Departmentof Education and students at large.

I have lately come to realise that some peopledo not value their worth; in fact they do noteven know or care what they are worth.

You can be the most beautiful person in theworld and everybody sees light and rainbowswhen they look at you, but if you yourself don’tknow it, all of that doesn’t even matter. Everysecond you spend on doubting yourworth, eve-

ry moment spend criticising yourself, is a se-cond of your life wasted; it’s a moment of yourlife thrown away.

It’s not like you have forever, so why wasteany of your seconds, why throw even one ofyour precious moments away?

You’re going to meet many people with do-mineering personalities: the loud, the obnox-ious, those that noisily stake their claims in yo-ur territory and everywhere else they set foot.

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal

with the things they do, because hate in yourheart will consume you too.

People have to forgive.Wedon’t have to likethem, we don’t have to be friends with them,we don’t have to send them hearts in text mes-sages - but we have to forgive them, to over-look, forget. If you live long enough, you’llmake mistakes. But if you learn from them, you’ll be a better person. It’s how you handleadversity, not how it affects you. The mainthing is never quit, never quit, never quit.

There are many people who will want to be-

friend you. If you fit the description of whatthey think is weak, predators want to havefriends that they can dominate because thatma-kes them feel strong and important. The truthis that predators have no strength and no coura-ge. It is you who are strong, and it is you whohas guts. “If yournumber one goal is tomakesure that everyone likes and approves ofyou, then you risk sacrificing your uniquen-ess, and, therefore, your excellence.” ~Un-known

SEOKENG. - March 21 turned out to be theunveiling date for the Zone 7 Massacre pla-que. This was the commemoration of when38 members of the Zone 7 community werebrutally killed during a night vigil on Janua-ry 5 of 1991.

Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM)officials and Gauteng provincial delegates

were deployed to unveil the stone since therecent destruction of the first.

The first plaque was unveiled by the ANCYouth League and Women’s League.

The stone of remembrance has grown intoa community treasure over the years.

SDM mayor Simon Mofokeng during hisspeech condemned the community for des-troying its history.

Mofokeng was alongside MEC NandiMayathula-Khoza and MEC Panyaza Les-ufi. In his talk he told the masses that atten-ded the unveiling that they need to protecttheir own history.

“The stone is just a symbol that will bepart of history; we are going to build a propermonument on an allocated place,” said Mof-okeng.Sedibeng Ster spoke to Mandla Nanga-

lembe, brother to Christopher Nangalembe, whose night vigil those who were slain wereattending that night:

“As a family we feel sad that the first stone

was destroyed but we are glad that a newone is being unveiled today in remembranceof those who died.

The stone does not belong to Chris but toall who laid down their lives for our free-dom.”

He further says both municipalities (Sedi-beng District Municipality and Emfuleni Lo-cal Municipality) are playing a vital role toprotect the memory of the community of Zo-ne 7.

EVATON. - Unemployed young pe-ople have embarked on an educatio-nal system to help kids with their ho-mework and young development ac-tivities.The initiative is by the ‘Evaton

West Cling’- itself the initiative ofWitwaters-

rand Dropouts and CEPD. Recentlya library was launched for the Eva-ton West community. This library will be the first of its

kind that consists of teachers, lear-ners and young development offici-als.Project manager Tholakele Mbe-

we says coming up with such a bril-liant project was not easy.

But the goal was one to createan educative environment for thekids.“Evaton as whole has only one li-

brary, which makes it difficult forchildren to access information.

Life has changed today.Children need to be informedwith

much information in order to facethe future,” said Mbewe during thelaunch.

In the morning a five-kilometremarch, in which school-uniformedlearners participated, was conductedby the Evaton Cling. The march was for awareness of

education and its importance to so-ciety, said Siphiwe Hlalele.

Learners were given a chance toread their favourite books to theirparents just to show what they doat the Evaton Cling every day.Mbewe says they don’t just give

children books to read but theymakesure they understand why they needthose books and help themwith theirhomework. The launch was a great success,

as parents can attest. They would like to see the Evaton

Cling grow further into other areas.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vaal Univer-sity of Technology (VUT) is a formidabletertiary institution. It is growing in leaps and bounds both

in stature and size.It has drawn students and staff from all

over the world. This was evidenced whenVaal campus hosted, embraced and cele-brated an annual Inter Cultural Day onMarch 14. The theme of the event was

“Connecting cultures, connecting theworld”. The main objective was to encour-age social cohesion, cultural understanding, tolerance and unity on the campuses. The aim was to appreciate diverse cultural

differences. Of 22 000 students about 2 000came from more than 35 countries.“It is important that we remember and cel-

ebrate our strengths and our values,” saidKediemetse Mokotsi, director: Marketingand Public Relations.

She adds that diversity remains one ofVUT’s highest priorities, one of the most im-portant ideals. The event has encouraged in-teraction and harmony among staff and stu-dents.The programme contributes to social jus-

tice and transformation of the university aswell as the strategic positioning of the uni-versity as far as internationalisation is con-cerned,” she said.Amongst dignitaries present were ambas-

sadors from various countries with whomVUT has very close partnerships. Profes-sor Gordon Zide, VUT deputy vice chan-cellor: Governance and InternationalTransformation, was guest speaker. The function was organised by the

VUT through the coordination of the De-partment of International Relations &Ad-vancement in partnership with StudentSupport and Services, Corporate Affairsand Social Justice, and Transformation.

Car battery failure isn’t scheduled like loadshedding. It can happen when you least ex-pect it.Finding a reliable, quality car battery can

be tricky, but if you look out for a long-termguarantee, you’re halfway there.A warranty is essentially the company’s

seal of approval on their product. SA’s lea-ding battery manufacturers, First NationalBattery, offer the only genuine nationwideguarantee – a two-year product warranty onthe complete ‘Raylite’ Enhanced Flooded

Battery (EFB) range. The warranty is valid at any one of First

National Battery’s franchise outlets - BatteryCentre - nationwide, regardless of whetherit was bought at that branch or from a diffe-rent stockist altogether.“If it’s a manufacturing fault, and is in the

warranty period, it will be replaced – no has-sle,” says Marketing Director of BatteryCentre, Andrew Webb.“Moreover, our Battery Centres are equip-

ped to establish the most likely cause of the

battery failure by performing a free-of-char-ge battery assessment. In some cases, the battery itself isn’t faulty

and our battery specialists are able to adviseon how to eliminate the problem – savingyou the unnecessary cost of replacing a bat-tery that doesn’t need replacing,” he adds.Choose high-quality, reap the benefits. When it comes to replacing a battery, think

long term. A cheap battery might save youa few rands now, but could end up costingyou a lot more in the long run. All Battery

Centres nationwide stock the technological-ly advanced Raylite EFB range.Designed as a cost-effective solution for

cars using start/stop technology, these batte-ries offer exceptional performance and arean excellent choice for all vehicle makes andmodels. “These batteries are also fully recy-clable and under normal operating conditi-ons will not require any maintenance,” con-cludes Webb.To get your current battery tested for free

EVATON. - Masihabulisane consortiumfor Emfuleni Artists recently held a Hu-man rights dance festival at Mafatsanehall in conjunction with Emfuleni LocalMunicipality.Masihabulisane was formed to unite

artists in order to give them a platformto share ideas, information and solutionsto challenges. The event brought a diversity of danc-

ers from across the Vaal into one venueto showcase their unique performances. One of the performers, Themba

Mwahla whose group Nomthandazo, per-formed a piece named ‘Right of Passage’states that the performance depicts a storyabout the oppression of women. “We livein a country where women are still not af-forded the same equality as men. Thispiece is about how men use women to getwhat they want and then just dump themand immediately move to the next.”Although the event was successful, art-

ists were worried that although the eventwas held in partnership with ELM, therewere no representatives from the arts andculture department.

BOPHELONG. - “Through education, Godraises somebody to be something in the com-munity, a person who can stand firm evenagainst the strongest wind.”This came from Pastor Ephraim Vilakazi

of Faith Connection Bible Church. He said leadership is about leaving a lega-

cy for generations to come: “The aim of in-viting graduates to the church is to engage, motivate and encourage children on the im-portance of education through prayer,” hesaid.

Church in the past played an importantrole in liberating the nation through sports, skills and academies.Vusimuze Makhubela, youth chairperson

at the church, said the youth are encouraged

to learn that they can make it in life regard-less of family background.

Some graduates are members of the FaithConnection Bible Church.Pastor Thabo Molefe of New Life Centre

Ministries from Evaton West was the moti-vational speaker. He told the congregation that, “our chil-

dren sometimes fail to see the potential Godhas invested in them”.Bishop Simon Khatiane of Jubilee Har-

vest Bible from Bophelong guest-preachedto the congregation that “when God placesyou in a certain place, don’t move around. You’d better stay because God has a purposefor you. Jumping from one church to the oth-er does not serve the purpose God has invest-ed in you to serve Him.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Warrant OfficerKabonena JohnNkosi said hewould neverforget when he joined the police force.

At that time, there were no senior blackpolice commanders.

All white police officers from the rankof constable had control over black offi-cers. That was the government of thetime, he said with a smile. Two farewellfunctions were held for him at two differ-ent ven ues in Spur Restaurant and outsidethe Magistrates Court.

Asked about the recent spate of crime,he conceded that it has increased dramati-cally:

“Criminals seems to have more rights.Law enforcement is very strict on all citi-zens but there’s little control over crimi-

nals. It’s good for people to have the rightsbut they should not abuse them.”

Nkosi retired at 56 as a Court Orderlyat the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. He joined the Lekoa municipal police in1985 before he went to Hammeskraal Po-lice Force College.

When the Police Service took over, in1990, he worked at Boipatong. A fatherof four, married to Liza Nkosi, he says heserved with the Visible Policing andCrime Prevention Unit.

He has not considered going into anybusiness for himself:

“I want to nurse my body, I am verytired,’ he said. “Thanks to all my seniors, juniors, prosecutors and magistrates forgiving me an opportunity to deliver whatI could.”

BOPHELONG. - Seeiso PrimarySchool pupils were over the moon whenthey received 1200 Tutudesks from Am-way South Africa.

The Tutudesks are named after Arch-bishop Desmond Tutu. They are porta-ble, provide a stable work surface forimpoverished schools that have little orno permanent facilities. The desks weredonated last Monday.

Raj Parshotam, general manager ofAmway South Africa, explains that thefuture of the continent depends on thelevel of education children receive and, without basic facilities like desks, pu-pils face an uphill battle: “By providingthis proven solution, we aim to inspireand give these pupils a head start.”

Majorobela Mokhothu, principal ofthe school, said children will feel em-powered by the desks:

“Pupils have a sense of pride. I ampositive that this adds to the willingnessof the pupils to attend classes.

This has a direct impact on their de-

velopment.”Salona Mabotje, head of department,

and Molefe Motale, deputy principal, saidthe school is blessed with such wonderfulhelp from the company.

The ball is in the pupil’s court to producebetter results: “After receiving the desks,we don’t expect any excuse from the chil-dren.” Shane Immelman, COO of Des-mond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Centre, said this goal will only be made possiblethrough the ongoing support of strategicProgramme Partners, such as the Amway:“Millions of African schoolchildren areseverely prejudiced in their educationalexperience by the lack of access to a class-room desk.”

Motale said the children will improvetheir literacy development and academicperformance outcomes.

TOUCHLINE hopes the dust has settled fol-lowing the weekend’s Emfuleni Local Foot-ball Association elections. TOUCHLINE al-sowishes to take this opportunity to congratu-

lation Mondli Nkosi for being electedchairman of the association for the next fouryears. Whether he is the right man for the jobwe will not know until he proves otherwiseto his detractors. It is no longer about whowon elections but about MOVING FOOT-BALL FORWARD as TOUCHLINE alwaysemphasises. What transpired prior and duringthe election should never be used against so-me of the football administrators or coachesin this region. This would be the biggest mis-take we could ever make in our local football.People should learn to accept defeat andmoveon with their lives. Those who were in the `opposite camp’

should accept the fact that Nkosi is now thenewman to lead our football to the next level. No hard feelings! However, TOUCHLINEmust say that it is not about position but thesupport of everyone who is involved in foot-ball in the Sedibeng region.Much needs to be changed in our football,

especially when it comes to junior soccer te-ams. TOUCHLINE believes ignoring themcan begin to come to an endwith developmentcoaches not only giving their soccer teams at-tention when it is time for tournaments orcompetitions in this region.Promotion League is not only a league in

the local football association, our junior lea-

gue deserves to be given the same attentionthose Promotion League teams enjoy. Thefootball structure is simple – it is from bottomand upward. The biggest mistake local football admini-

strators canmake is towish thatMondli Nkosiand his committee fail. This would be unpro-fessional and unsporting, to say the least. Thenewly elected committee deserves all supportfrom the Sedibeng football fraternity.TOUCHLINE’s message to everyone in-

volved in football is that “football is not a`matter of life and death but more that that’.As they say, “If you can’t beat them – jointhem”. That’s the football spirit. Let’s do itagain next week, same place, same time –TOUCHLINE…!!!
