SEDIBENG.- A 46-year-old mother of threefrom Bophelong was recently fired and thenrecalled but demoted to a contract worker af-ter her employees discovered her HIV statuswithout her even knowing it.

According to the victim, Susan Seliane, she herself did not know her status. She won-ders how her employers got to know of itwithout her knowledge.“I only knew that I was positive after I was

told by a colleague who is manager in a diffe-rent plant from mine. The news killed meinside since people knew about my statuswithout me knowing,” says Seliane. She claims she’s been working for the

company for over nine years. The most pain-ful part of her experience is that her childworks in the same company with her.“Even he knew about my status before me.

He underwent the humiliation that I wentthrough,” says Seliane. After the disclosureby the manager, Seliane says that she wentto test and found out that indeed she was po-sitive.“I don’t understand how my status was gi-

ven to my superiors without me knowing.Surely that is a violation of my rights,” saysthe devastated woman.“This colleague who is a manager at the

company asked my line manager to fire me.Ever since then, I have been treated like adog. I was even asked to use a different kit-chen and sometimes stopped from enteringthe premises,” says the distraught Seliane,

who is seeking help.Seliane has reports fromwork which show

every incident and how her rights were viola-ted. She has written to the Human RightsCommission and the case is also still pendingat the Labour Department and the CCMA.Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) was

contacted about the matter and the organisa-tion’s Lebohang Pitso says they are keen toget to the bottom of the matter.

SEBOKENG. - The Democratic Alliance inWard 31 recently launched their Anti Drugand Substance Abuse Campaign at the Lebo-hang Centre in Zone 10. The campaign waslaunched under the theme “Drugs are every-one’s problem.”’The event was attended by the community

at large, including officials and non-govern-mental organisations, NGOs.DA Sedibeng caucus leader Dady Mollo

delivered the keynote address at the event.Mollo said the reason drugs are such a bigproblem in society is because they are a directlink to criminal activity: “People commitcrime to feed their habits and, while they areunder the influence of addictive substances,

they often become violent and abusive. So re-ducing the level of drug and alcohol abusewill go a long way towards reducing crime.”SaidMollo: “I have a drug problem. I don’t

use drugs, but they still affect me. If you havea drug problem or know someone who needshelp, please contact SANCA for help or visitour local centre in Zone 14 near the shoppingcomplex.”Mollo told the community that it needed

to be united and fight against drug abuse asit is very popular in the Sebokeng Area.DA members encouraged residents to re-

port known drug dealers to Police, help drugusers access treatment options and help edu-cate young people on the risks associatedwithdrug usage.“The Democratic Alliance will play its part

by reaching as many residents as possiblethrough this extensive campaign. We are ask-ing all residents of the Ward to help us fightthis serious problem as part of a concertedawareness campaign,” Mollo concluded.

The recent defacing and removal of statuesaround the country without following correctprocedures (If there is a need at all for theirremoval) must be condemned to the fullest.I believe that a person who does not knowwhere he comes from will never know whereis going. Removing the statues is the sameas removing our Heritage which forms an im-portant part of our history, both black and

white. It is said that history repeats itself, but we

are only doomed to relive our past if we failto learn from it. The past is not a map to whereyou are going; it’s a record of where you havebeen. Its purpose is not to drag you backthrough emotional muck, but to serve youbest by reminding you of lessons learned soyou can avoid them in the future. Heritageis the history, unique knowledge, values andtraditions that have developed by a combina-

tion of genes and environment over time.Her-itage, whether it be national, cultural, or fami-ly is an endowment of unique sets of historicalknowledge; but foremost, heritage is your his-tory. It is responsible for how we came to be,it is a very large part of whom and what weare and it can determinewhatwewill become.

Not everyone feels a connection with theircultural heritage, but many people do. Whatis it about cultural heritage that draws thesepeople to it? Some may think traditions are

archaic and no longer relevant, and that theyare unnecessary during these modern times.Perhaps for some, they aren’t; but for otherslike me exploring cultural heritage offers arobust variety of benefits.Do not run through lifeso fast that you forgetnot only where you have been, but also where you are going.~from “Peace” by author unknownLerato…

SEDIBENG. - Amnesty International in part-nership with the Open Society Initiative forSouthern Africa will hold a two-day roundta-ble debate on corporate accountability in thesocial and economic lives of Africa’s youthat the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on April10.

The roundtable will critique the “Africa Ri-sing” narrative of a future rooted in economicgrowth alone and suggest alternative models. It will bring together 20 remarkable younghuman rights champions from across Africaat the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as partof a two-day roundtable dialogue on corpora-te accountability in the social and economic

lives of Africa’s youth. The participants of the roundtable were

drawn from diverse backgrounds and sectorsthat span all sub-regions of the African conti-nent. They come from Kenya, Mauritius, Se-negal, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and elsewhere, representing well-established youth constitu-encies in their respective countries, and havebeen championing human rights issues. Theparticipants are between the ages of 20 and30 years old.

The youth-led gathering aims to decon-struct the “Africa Rising” narrative using ahuman rights lens in order to expose the con-tradictions of economic growth in relation toyouth unemployment, deepening youth po-

verty and rising youth inequalities.“Despite the euphoria surrounding Africa’s

growth projections over the past several ye-ars, inequalities – - fuelled by high unemploy-ment and deeply entrenched poverty - conti-nue to undermine the social and economicwell being of youth across the region. Thisis an unacceptable state of affairs with far-rea-ching implications for human rights and fun-damental freedoms,” said Edward Ndopu,Amnesty International’s Regional Activismand Youth Coordinator for Africa.

“There is a clear disjuncture between Afri-ca Rising, which – frankly – has become arather hackneyed narrative, and divorcedfrom the socio-economic realities on the

ground. This, of course, begs the question –for whom is Africa rising? The answer, webelieve, must invariably bring us to a deeplycritical and nuanced conversation about therole of state and non-state actors in perpetua-ting the status quo,” said Edward Ndopu.

The primary objective of the Africa YouthRoundtable is to generate five recommendati-ons that will be taken to the World EconomicForum on Africa in June 2015 as part of asustained continent-wide #AfricaNot4Salecampaign for corporate accountability in thesocial and economic lives of Africa’s youth. For more information contact Amnesty

SEDIBENG.- Local ball jugglers are fast ma-king a name for themselves in the world of“freestyle”. These local boys hoisted the Sedi-beng flag high when they were invited by theIndian Football Association to perform at theclosing ceremony of the India Super Leaguerecently.According to Josias “Bingo” Nnete, when

they started their ball juggling careers, little

did they know that one day they would endup performing on the big stage – overseas. This exciting former Moroka Swallows mid-fielder says performing at that level was adream come true for all of them. Nnete saysthe Indian Football Association organiserswere impressed with these locals’ performan-ce on the day:“We were all nervous performing in front

such a big crowd but then had fun and enjoyed

ourselves. We will cherish the moment for therest of our lives because it is not everyonewhocan get this opportunity. Indian people reallyenjoyed our performance and promised to in-vite us this year again at the end of their leagueprogramme.” On the other hand, Nnete ack-nowledged the support of Sedibeng peoplesince the inception of their unique project.Nnete started his ball juggling career after heretired prematurely from professional foot-

ball. He was one of the exciting players to ha-ve emerged from Sedibeng and was hailed asthe next Joel ‘Ace’Mnini when he joinedMo-roka Swallows. In a heart-to-heart interviewwith Sedibeng Ster Sport, Nnete says itdoesn’t mean that, if you retire from high levelfootball, your career is over.He challenges Se-dibeng youngsters never to give up their dre-ams over the challenges they experience intheir football careers.

There is this belief that Sedibeng, the formerVaal Triangle, needs a professional soccerleague. However, TOUCHLINE differs withthose who say we needan elite league team inthis region.

In fact, what weneed right now is nota professional soccerteam, but a solid foun-dation or structurefrom which to producequality players.

There is no structu-re in this region but so-me local football ad-ministrators, officials and coaches turn ablind eye to it. Look, a professional soccerteam is and never will be a solution to ourproblem.

In fact, we should first ask ourselves whyhousehold names from teams like Vaal Pro-fessionals, A-Z FC, Home Defenders, Rain-bow Juventus, Bra Thomas Black, TransvaalJumpers FC, Early Birds FC, Boipatong RealRangers FC, Tranvaal X20 FC, ContinentalFC and Sebokeng Tow For Joy, no longeremerge for South African football?

If everyone thinks a professional soccerleague is the best solution to problems in thisregion, they have another think coming! That thought is a big no-no as far as TOU-CHLINE is concerned!

The above-mentioned teams were suppo-sed to be household names in South Africanfootball but none of them exist, as we speak.Vaal Professionals was the pride of the VaalTriangle but, like other clubs before them,it was relegated from top-flight football.

The club did not have a developmentstructure like itsJohannesburg counterpartsKaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi

Sundowns, to namebut several.

Without deve-lopment we are likea nation withoutculture!

This was thedownfall of VaalProfessionals andmany others teamsin this region. The-re was no solidfoundation.

Yes, we all want to have a professionalsoccer team in this region but – first –FOUNDATION and DEVELOPMENT.

In football there is no way you can survivewithout having a proper structure.

Local football administrators and clubowners have no vision that is why theywould rather buy status than have a solidfoundation.

Another example: You find a SAB Leagueteam challenging for the league title but theydon’t have development structures.

In every family there are children, and de-velopment is like our children, in case thoseSAB League teams are not aware of this.

Waking up in the morning and claimingto be challenging for the league title is exac-tly like somebody who has just regained con-sciousness in a tavern in the morning.

The only time we will get it right in thisregion is to support those with a solid deve-lopment structure going forward. TOU-CHLINE, touch-and-go till next week!

Without developmentwe are a nation with

no culture!

foundation.

SEDIBENG. - Bongani “Wonderboy” Mahlangu silenced theEastern Cape last week Sunday recently champion Siviwe Has-

heni in the eighth round. The National Title Challenge – Junior Featherweight Division

- was staged right in Hasheni’s home town but the very determinedSedibeng challenger Mahlangu went there with one goal - to fightand be victorious.Mahlangu says the fight was set to go 12 rounds. It was going

to be a profound challenge for him to fight the champion till thelast round: “I had to put all the puzzle-pieces in the right positionsand find a way to knock him out,” says Mahlangu.

Things started to fall apart for Hasheni in round five (5) whenMahlangu made him feel he had to fight to survive. Hasheni gottired but survived the hail of Wonderboy’s blows. Hasheni wentdown but managed to rise again after the fifth round.

Mahlangu says, “In the eighth (8th) round I took him downagain but he survived due to the count and was saved by thebell. I then went to the corner where my coach told me tofight like a storm because I had fought that man before inthe Baby Champs and beat him, so what could possibly stopme now? The other side came prepared, thinking they woulddefeat me but they were wrong. I did as my coach told meand I gave him my special punch - an uppercut. He felt itand started moving backwards and I felt that I did get intohim.“I went again and gave him my uppercut mixed with some

more punches for an extra combination, and he was downand they started counting to five. He was still down and hiscoach threw in the towel and you knew what that meant. It was all over.”

Bongani "Wonderboy" Mahlangu recently clinched aboxing victory.
