The children alleged- ly died of food poisoning after coming home from school. They complained of aching tummies, vomited blood and were later ad- mitted to hospital where they died soon after. “I want answers. My son has gone too soon. “I saw my son’s private parts shrink away, particularly on Friday when the family went to wash him and at this time he was still foa- ming at the mouth and nose,” says the mo- ther of Siyabonga, Portia Mbukazi. Portia states that although Siyabonga told them that he had only eaten porridge at school, this could not have been the cause as it would have also affected all the other kids. “I believe that whatever these two kids ate came from a third party. My son came home on Friday and he was just fine, but later he told us that his tummy was aching. Later on he was rushed to the hospital. I was suprised to get a call on Saturday from the hospital tel- ling me that my son had passed away. I have no choice but to accept that Siyabonga is no more,” she says. Bongani’s parents Leornard and Ag- nes Zilile also say that Bongani’s death came as a shock to them. “Bon- gani was not sick. “When he came back from school he was play- ing with the other kids, but later in the evening he complained of a stomach ache. We did not think much of it until he started vomiting blood and suffered from severe diarrhoea at around midnight. In the morning, when we saw that his conditi- on was deteriorating we took him to the doctor and then proceeded to the hospital. “The doctor told us after he had examined Bongani that it could be food poisoning. Bongani later died,” says Leonard adding that when he asked his dying son what he had eaten, Bongani said words to the effect of ‘nothing out of the ordinary.’ Dan Letanta, who is School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson of Le- sedi La Thuto says, “The de- ath of the two learners is real- ly a mystery. The school feeds more than 1000 kids daily so that could not possibly be the cause.” Letanta adds that all parents should see this as a lesson. “The problem here is that there are untrustworthy people standing outside the school yards selling unknown substances to our kids. I would like to urge parents to be more strict and tell their kids not to buy anything from these people.” A doctor at Sebokeng Hospital confirmed the cause of death as food poisoning. SEDIBENG. - Not all the police are bad but, apparently, some have been placed in the po-lice services ranks for the wrong reasons. A29-year-old Mmulane Mofokeng was arrest-ed, pepper-sprayed, assaulted and his right legbroken, allegedly byOrangeville Police offic-ers recently. Mofokeng says that he waswalking in the evening with a friend whenpolice stopped and searched them.Everything flew out of control when he

asked the police officers why they weresearching them.He said they suddenly punched and kicked

him while he was on the ground. One of the ‘police officers’ pepper-sprayed

him in the face before they manacled him and

loaded him into the back of the bakkie. Thatwasn’t all. They then drove to the HeilbronPolice Station, where they continued to as-sault him.Expecting to appear in the Magis-trates Court, he was instead released and toldthere was no case.Mofokeng said he was assisted by other

people to the hospital before he went to opena case of being a victim of grievous bodilyharm.“The case has been referred to the Inde-

pendent Police Investigative Directorate (IP-ID),” said Sergeant Sellwane Mapamela.

SEBOKENG. - A pile-up occurred when fourvehicles collided on Wednesday night aftera truck hit and killed a road-crossing pig onthe Golden Highway. The mysterious accident left moto-

rists wondering how the mishaphad occurred. According toEmfuleni Traffic, the unfor-tunate pig left the tarmacslippery with pig fat -which caused the fourvehicles to slip intosomething “less com-fortable.” No-onecould be blamed forthe collision and ‘Ba-be’s’ owner was now-here to be found. Thewhite Golf, the ‘inyathi’,blue Golf and bakkie driverswere seen “grunting” aroundthe scene. “Who can be blamed forsuch a mysterious accident? The truckdri-ver fled the scene and we cannot even findthe bloody pig’s owner,” snorted the furious

driver of the blue Golf.“We tried everything in our power to avoid

the collision, but we had less than a split se-cond,” explained one of the victims. The community wasted no time and col-lected chunks of the pigs’ meat as they

were passing by. The pigs’ car-cass was taken from the sceneby ‘pig-headed’ membersof the community of Son-derwater and Kananabefore the police andtraffic department ar-rived at the scene.Police spokesper-

son Warrant OfficerMzikhulu Mthimkhu-lu said a case of reck-less driving has beenopened and they are wor-

king on it. “A thorough in-vestigation has been launched

to find the cause of accident. Atthis present time Police could not confirm

that the accident was due to slippery pig fat,”concludes Mthimkhulu.

SEBOKENG. – It sounded like a joke at first,or a group of confused young people, or it loo-ked as if the ‘Wrong Turn’ movie had repeateditself without its script and a movie director.

This was as the ‘Wrong Turn’ gang rose likea cobra and spread its poison farther and fartherafield. Saturday morning was chaotic at Zone

7 and Eatonside. The angry community tookthe law into their own hands to take revengefor the spreading influence of the gang, whohad been stripping the community bare.

As rumours and incidents allegedly perpe-trated by the gang shake the Vaal, the angrycommunity wanted no less than their blood .The issue of ‘Wrong Turn’ stirred emotions so

intense that anger seems to be an understate-ment.

The angry community searched for thegroup. In Zone 7 two houses and a shack wereburned to ashes and, in Eatonside, three housesand two shacks were set on fire. Police unitsfrom the Flying Squad, K9 and the Public Vio-lence Unit were deployed to the scene to calmpeople down. The bitter situation worsened astimewent by. Police tried to calmpeople down, but the angry community told Police they hadnothing to say as Police had done nothing toprevent the crisis from its beginning.

Police spokesperson Constable TshifiwaMitileni confirms that the situation was out ofcontrol as families had lost their properties.“We arrested 11 people for public violence andpossession of dangerous weapons. They willsoon appear in the Magistrates Court,” saysMitileni, emphasising that Police are totallyagainst public violence.

He further says eight arson cases had beenreported and all cases are being thoroughly in-vestigated by two Police stations - Evaton andDe Deur. Mitileni says Police further arrested

seven ‘Wrong Turn’ members on charges ofattempted murder this week.

A victim hacked by the group is stable inhospital, though he is fighting for his life in theIntensive Care Unit (ICU).Sedibeng Ster spoke to the Emfuleni Local

Municipality Community Safety and SecurityMember of Mayoral Committee Veli Mcerawho says. “We urge the community to workwith the police not against them. Public violen-ce won’t help, but reporting it and helping ap-prehend them could be of use,”

A house said to belong to a ‘Wrong Turn’ leader was set on fire on Saturday as an angrymob pursued them in Zone 7. Members of the group were also arrested.

SEBOKENG. - Democratic Alliance(DA) ward councillor Attie Moleko andhis mother were left frustrated when theirlawyer withdrew from their case of fraud.

The two suspects appeared briefly inthe Sebokeng Magistrates Court on Mon-day. The lawyer told the magistrate thathe could not represent his clients afterthey allegedly failed to settle their pay-ment.

Councillor Moleko requested the courtto give him and his mother a chance toget another lawyer. He told the court thathe was broke and could not afford thesum demanded by his representative.

The magistrate postponed the case fortrial commencing November 8. The bail

application of R1 000 each has been ex-tended. According to the documents incourt, the suspects were arrested andcharged with fraud. The court heard thatthe suspects collected money fraudulent-ly from homeless and disgruntled Evatontenants.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality in-vestigating team was tipped off before ar-rests could be made. Moleko was arrestedafter some tenants pointed him out as themastermind behind the collection of themoney. Police said the municipal stampwas used to process the deal.

His mother pretended to be a landlordcharging the community exorbitant sumsof cash. The court has informed eight wit-nesses that they will be called for trial.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Diphapang ‘Parks’Khaiyane of the Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) recently spent a weekend behind bars.He was charged with assault for causinggrievous bodily harm.

Warrant Officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkuluhas confirmed the arrest. Khaiyane couldnot attend the official launch of the EFF hos-ted in Marikana, North West recently, whereeight cattle were slaughtered for the launchof the new party following his arrest. The

arrest comes after Khaiyane allegedly refu-sed to refund a person he had allegedly col-lected money from under the false pretextthat he would ‘organise’ him an RDP housein Zone 24.

Apparently the complainant met withKhaiyane and demanded a refund. This waswhen Khaiyane apparently assaulted him.Other witnesses complained to SedibengSter about Khaiyane’s tendency, “to makeempty promises about RDP houses beforetaking your money.” Emfuleni Local Muni-

cipality officials recently told Sedibeng Sterthat more than 40% of the RDP houses inZone 19 are illegally occupied. The illegaloccupants apparently point accusing fingersat Khaiyane.

When going to print Patrick Sindane, pro-vincial spokesperson of the EFF and Khaiy-ane himself, were unavailable for comment.

SEDIBENG.- Through their Regional Secre-tary, the Congress of the People (COPE) hasannounced that they welcome the amalgama-tion of Emfuleni Local Municipality, MidvaalLocal Municipality and Sedibeng DistrictMunicipality into forming a Metropolitan Ci-ty. However this is with caution.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster COPE’s Regio-nal Secretary Ishmael Hashatsi says that thecentralised governance system under the Me-tropolitanMunicipality iswelcomed and if ef-fectively run it will introduce a catalyst meas-ure needed to cut-out unnecessary wastage oftaxpayers’ money in duplication of manage-ment positions by focusing the consolidated

resources of both merged municipalities whe-re they are needed most.

Hashatsi warns the community, however, that the Metro will not eliminate corruptionnor will it make the lazy ‘deployed’ publicservants employed at municipalities more ef-fective. “The Congress of the People wouldtherefore like to caution the community of theVaal not to be under any delusion whatsoeverinto believing that the Metropolitan Munici-pality will be a SILVER BULLET solutionto the mismanagement which have becomethe hallmark of our local municipality,” Has-hatsi ends.

African National Congress (ANC) Head ofCommunications in Sedibeng Themba Ndaba

says that the people of the Vaal must under-stand that this (Metro issue) is a continuationof an agenda to build a united democraticSouth Africa. He ends by saying, “This resultis important for the residents of Emfuleni andMidvaal; not for political reasons but for fi-nancial sustainability, development and thefuture of our region. This is also a vindicationto us that we were justified in embarking onthe democratic process. The voice of the peo-ple was heard and democracy is in action.”

Metro will not be a silver bullet

Right: Cope's Ishmael Hashatsi says thathis partywelcomes the decisionof aMetro. He warns, however, that things shouldchange for the better.

My heart is bleeding, my eyes are teary andI have not been like this in a long, long time. This dark cloud of misery descended on meafter reading a particular book called ‘DrugMulled-Sixteen years in a Thai Prison’ by Jo-anne Joseph. The story is about the hardshipsthatwere faced by onceMiss SA finalist Van-essa Goosen in a Thailand prison for sixteenand a half years.

The book made me realise that not one ofus is perfect. In the hardest of times there issomething or someone that is guarding us and

that in the hardest of times we should havefaith. Goosen gave birth in the Thailand pri-son. She had to teach herself survival skillsin a country that is right at the end of theworld - without her family and without be-ing able to communicate with those aroundher. Shewas allegedly framed for drug traf-ficking, she suffered from severe depressi-on and almost did not live to tell the tale.

Don’t get me wrong, this article is nota review of the book, but a simple engage-ment on the issues that she faced, that we- you and I - face every day. Rightfully orwrongfully accused,my thoughtswere con-sumed by the narration of the book. In thisworld we are deceived by the ones we love,

we rely mostly on people who are unreliable,we look up to the worst of people thereby en-ding up living misguided and worthless lives.I take my hat off to Vanessa for surviving theworst of jail’s in the world so she could tellthe story, guilty or not.

The moral of this is that we should all standup and be counted, be strong and never giveup even in the hardest of situations. Goosen ne-ver believed that she would return to her mo-therland, South Africa. She never believed thatshe would one day be free but after a long gru-elling sixteen-and- a- half years of living in arat-infested, urine-reeking prison, she survived- to see her now teenage daughter, to see heraging mother who had tried to commit suicide

twice during her daughter’s imprisonment.By my own acknowledgement the book isa must read. It made me come to my sen-ses, it made me realise that life is precious.I am telling you that my whole perspectiveof life has changed.

I have learned to appreciate more, tolove more, to be kind to others, to watchthe minutes that pass by and remember todo something significant with my time. But most of all, it has taught me to be hum-ble and appreciate life. My heart is blee-ding and my eyes are teary. ‘Hona le bathoba bonengmathata lefatsheng, rata wa he-no jwale ka ha o ithata.’

SEBOKENG. - Boipoloko Stimulation Day-care centre in Zone 13 collaborated with Se-bokeng Library, Sebokeng Home Affairs,Khulisani and ‘I can’ to bring the first ‘Men-tal Health Celebration’ to Sebokeng. The event aims to inform and educate the

public about different types of disabilities, opportunities available to those with disabi-lities as well as to celebrate their caregivers.“It is important that we create a social

awareness - that disabled people should alsobe celebrated and form part of society. Theparents of these kids must be proud of them-selves for not disregarding them and tryingtheir level best to integrate them into socie-ty,” says programme director TshehloTheko.Thapelo Monyeke of “I can” Academy,

which deals with learnerships for peoplewith different disabilities, stated that alt-hough society regards people with mental

and physical illnesses as disabled, theyshould be called “differently-abled” as theyare able to do other things and possess cer-tain talents. Centre Manager, Selinah Tsha-balala says, “We are happy to have had ourfirst ‘Mental Health Celebration’ today. Wehope that more stakeholders including localgovernment will join us next year to make

the event bigger and more successful.”Tshabalala states that the centre she mana-

ges with Elizabeth Moleleki was openedabout 10 years ago by parents with disabledchildren. “This centre was initiated because,as parents, we saw the importance of givingour kids a chance to get an education,” con-cludes Tshabalala.

EVATON. - According to the Department ofEducation, a School Governing Body (SGB)is accountable to the school and should workhand in hand with the management to createconditions to achieve quality learning and tea-ching in all our schools.

This is not so at the Bafokeng PrimarySchool in Palm Springs Section A.

This school is underdeveloped with brokenwindows, taps, doors and a burned hall that po-ses a danger to the children. It is alleged thatschool funds are abused by the school manage-ment instead of being used to fix the school.Governing bodies have a key role to playaroundmaking policies that relate to issues likeschool fees and a co-de of conduct for lear-ners.

According to a reli-able source the SGBis sidelined all the ti-me and never knowswhen important in-formation is beingdiscussed. It appearsthat there are alwaysactivities involvingmoney at the schooland that parents wishthe money could beused to fix some ofthe equipment. Thereis no proper security, the fence has holesthat make it easy forcriminals to enter theschool and use it as adagga den. A concer-ned parent says, “I ha-ve children at thisschool and always he-ar that the schoolneeds money to raisefunds. Where is themoney from the go-vernment?” The pa-rents also claim thatwhen they complainto the principal hisquestion will be whe-ther or not parents arepaying school fees. It

is believed that some parents are planning totake matters into their own hands claiming thatthey won’t stand for the corruption that is ta-king place at the school of misused funds andmoney that seems to disappear without anyoneknowing.

Lesego Masemola, Media Relations Officerof the Department of Education, says, “The de-partment will send inspectors to ensure thatthere is drinking water and working toilets.

The school is on the Department’s major re-habilitation programme for 2014/15 financialyear”.

According to her Bafokeng Primary is a pu-blic school and therefore is funded by the De-partment of Education.

SEBOKENG. - The ever-growing film indus-try will experience a breath of fresh air follo-wing the launch of the movie ‘Class of Hell.’Dramatic Zone partnered with Tshungu Mul-timedia and Diraduma Productions to bringus a productionwith an applicable theme con-cerning recent happenings in the VaalTriangle. According to writer and ve-teran actor, Nyembezi Kunene, themovie depicts the life of a studentwho abuses drugs and struggleswith evil spirits.

“There has been much contro-versy, especially here in the Vaal, about evil spirits, Satanism andexcessive drug abuse by the yo-uth. The movie aims to spark adebate of whether drugs fuelsatanic behaviour or if the twoare even remotely connec-ted,” he says.

This movie, which isproudly Vaal, was directed, produced and filmed exclusi-vely by talent from the Vaal.

The movie is the brainchildof Kunene, Mandla Mtombeni,John Hlaluku and Mashaola Makwela, whoall contributed to different elements of film-making.

“The collaboration of the three productioncompanies happened because we wanted tomix the old with the new - veterans like me,and fresh young minds who are still learningabout the arts, film and production,” adds Ku-

nene. Makwela says, “This is a pilot projectwe will use to create a portfolio for future en-deavours and to request funding from rele-vant stakeholders as the movie was filmed ona zero budget,” he said adding that they hopeto broadcast the film soon.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - North West Uni-versity and Educate South Africa’s (ESA)Sisterhood Campaign held an event thatwas aimed at creating cancer awareness re-cently. Madikgetho Raditsela, who is amember of the campaign states that, as partof October Cancer Awareness Month, theythought it vital to inform people about theimportance of testing for different kinds ofcancer. “Initially we thought that this eventwould be specifically aimed at women, butthen it came to light that more and moremen were getting affected by this disease, especially through prostate and testicularcancer.”

Raditsela adds that a lot of people arestill in the dark about cervical cancer, which mostly affects sexually active peo-

ple. “Through research, we found that itwas more likely for younger people to getcervical cancer if they are inclined to besexually active.” On the day, people of allgenders were encouraged to test for cancerregularly as early detection of the diseasemakes it easier to treat. Sipho Malindi ofEducate South Africa says, “Another cam-paign that was launched at the event wascalled ‘Real men wear pink.’ This themewas launched because we wanted peoplein general to move away from the percepti-on that cancer only affects women as it isbecoming evident that men are also affec-ted.”Fact - Cancer is now the second leading

cause of death worldwide and accounts formore deaths than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosisand malaria combined.

ORANGE FARMS.- South African televisioncelebrity Hlubi Mboya recently celebratedGlobal Hand-washing Day with Dettol at Ma-dumePrimarySchool inOrangeFarm. To cele-brate Global Hand-washing Day, Mboya joi-ned Dettol to teach the learners the importanceof effective hand-washing to overall health andwell being. In South Africa, 30% of childhooddeaths under the age of 5 result fromcommuni-cable diseases. Many of these fatalities couldbe prevented if simple hygiene practises suchas hand washing are followed.

“So effective in preventing disease is properhand washing that the process has becomeknown as the ‘do-it-yourself vaccine’ and po-tential positive implications for overall impro-ved health andwellness is significant,” says DrKgosi Letlape, ophthalmologist and currentPresident of the African Medical Association

on behalf of Dettol South Africa.Hand-washing with soap and water is the

most efficient and cost effectiveway to preventthe spread of infections like diarrhea and respi-ratory tract infections. The six steps to properhand-washing are:

1. Wet your hands with warm water and ap-ply a small amount of liquid soap

2. Rub your palms together vigorously(away from the water) to make a lather

3. Rub every part of your hands includingthe backs of your hands, your thumbs, betweenyour fingers, and under and around your nails

4. Continue for at least 20 seconds. It takesthat long for the soap and scrubbing action todislodge and remove the germs

5. Rinse your hands well under clean, run-ning water

6. Dry your hands thoroughly using a clean, dry towel

Gone are the dayswhen soccer fanswould givetheir favourite soccer stars nicknames relevantto this beautiful game in admiration of theirtalent and skill - but not any more. For the uninformed, nicknames brought so-

me excitement to football if one recalls nickna-mes such as Killer, Roller-Way, Teenager, Ys-

ter, Mr Cool, Road Block, The Great, Compu-ter and the list goes on. These are thenicknames that used to catch our imaginationwhen football was viewed as a form of enter-tainment played for the love of it - not money.Shooting From The Hip was taken aback

when a coach and players called one of theirteammates ‘Nyaope’ over the weekend. Hellno! Where are the exciting nicknames if coa-ches call their players ‘Nyaope’? There are somany nicknames to give to these youngstersinstead of nicknaming them after harmful sub-stances such as ‘Nyaope’.Look, our footballers deserve better nickna-

mes that will inspire these up-and-coming yo-ungsters to realise their dream to play in thehighest level of football. But if we give themnicknames like ‘Nyaope’, are we inspiring or

killing their talent? It means coaches condonethese youngsters’ actions off the field. Still onnicknames, Shooting From The Hip was alsovery disappointed to hear a development coachsaying “fancy football doesn’t win games”.Please! If there is coach who thinks like this, you must know that he is a “fake”. He is nota development coach because he doesn’t belie-ve in natural talent. What is fancy football?(if Shooting From The Hip may ask).Shooting From The Hip immediately con-

fronted this coach and he knows himself. Hel-lo, can a development coach really say this tohis colleagues? This is a clear indication thatsome coaches are in football by mistake. Coa-ches like these are not good for our football.Shooting From The Hip is not sure if there issomething like “fancy” football as this coach

suggests. The only thing that Shooting FromThe Hip knows is creative football where yo-ungsters are allowed to express themselveswithout thinking of results. What is ‘development’ teaching to these yo-

ungsters if a coach says “fancy” footballdoesn’t win games? Are development coachesforgetting that at this level wemust allow theseyoungsters to express themselves and entertainthe spectators? For example, most of the teams that are out

of the tournament play entertaining footballThis coming weekend it is the u/17 soccer

tournament and I can tell you now – we arenot going to witness the number of goals sco-red by the u/13s and u/15s because coacheswill want to win at all costs. Fancy footballmy Foot!
