Colored lights line the trees and houses of Beaufort Countyright now, an illuminating announcement that Christmas is almosthere. As the holiday gets closer many of us will be off to the storesbuying gifts for our loved ones, others are making lists of thegroceries to buy in order to cook holiday dinner for their family.Poinsettias begin to appear on everyone’s front porches and foyersand wreaths adorn nearly every door in town. Beaufort is a townthat clearly loves Christmas.

Before there were big box stores, the only places to shopwere the stores in downtown Beaufort. It was a social time inBeaufort, because everyone who had shopping to do would beon Bay and Carteret Streets. You couldn’t help but run intosomeone you knew, whether it be from work, church, a socialclub or your neighborhood, and you all have something incommon during that time. You are all out shopping for thatspecial gift for the ones you love. You want to see that look ofutter surprise on their face, the look that says “This is the bestpresent ever!”

Christmas isn’t about the shopping or the giant discountstore sales. Christmas is about giving to the people you loveand asking for nothing in return. Whether it be giving up thatlast piece of pie or ringing the bell for the Salvation Army,Christmas is about giving of yourself and your time, notbecause you want credit for it but because you want to do it.HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
