Snagglepuss here, heavens to murgatroid...and I'm going to talk to you about the law as it relates to animation, not the legal-type law, but the physical laws

They have a lot to do in the understanding

Isaac Newton's laws about action and gravity come into play for the animator. The behavior of every object in the .natural world is controlled by the forces ot gravity and friction. The behavior ot living bodies, like yours and mine, are also affected by these forces, but we have brains, wills and muscles that can fight against these basic forces. This action can alter the results of a motion.

There are other things that can change the basic forces. Winds, storms, tides, waves, earthquakes, heat and cold, all can do this to alter the affect of basic physical laws. Weight and size are factors that also come into play.

An animator, the artist who creates drawings that appear to move, must understand the basic forces which create the laws of motion. The animator recognizes that the laws of gr|vity and friction are here to stay and need to be dealt with. Things like wind, rain, and waves are forces which the animator must be able to cope with in his action drawings. The animator also realizes that weight and size cannot be ignored in creating character and object motion.

In real life, things like gravity are experienced continually and are natural If a man steps out the window of a two-story building he falls to the ground, but an animator can create a very funny scene by adding a timing delay in the fall By going beyond reality he takes advantage of it.

We know that a character must fall if he steps over a cliff, but the animator can make the actor tread air for a short frantic moment before gravity takes over. Or the fun can go further as the character in his panic scramble* In midair and turns back, trying to save himself. Even during the fall to the ground, the animator can save his character from crashing by having him flap his arms In a blrd-llke fashion that flutters him safely to the ground. All of this depends on the physical law that Insists that an object must fall to the earth unless another action resists it on the way.

That Newton fellow also said something about a body in motion will remain in motion, or an object at rest will remain that way. In each case, another action must come into play in order to change this condition.

For example, a ball sitting on the ground will remain there unless a! strong wind blows it along, or rain puddles the ground and floats it away. Someone can come up and kick the ball, Its round shape must change to this force, and the animator draws a new form of the ball as a result of the kick. At the impact of the kick it takes on a squashed look that re-forms into its original round shape as it zooms through the air. Again, the force of gravity tends to pull the ball to the ground. Perhaps it hits a tree before it falls. Once more, its shape is altered by the force of stopping. In each case the animator exaggerates the result of the action. Exaggeration is part of the art of animation and going beyond natural action is routine for cartoon fun

The best animation gives every movement full visual value and more. Only by knowing the laws governing such motion can this be achieved to the fullest extent. The animation artist uses this knowledge to create movement without directly mimicking nature.

So, when you see me stretch, jump, run. or fall, I'm just like a rubber ball. I am being drawn to follow those basic natural laws. As the great Isaac Newton once said, "Every action has a reaction", so I must now react and exit stage left.
