The May Dinner - Thinking Fast and Slow A few Mensans came to the May dinner, the last one before a three-month summer hiatus. The topic

for discussion was Thinking, Fast and Slow, a 2011 book by psychologist and behavioral economist

Daniel Kahneman, winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize for Economics. Kahneman’s book focuses on two

modes of thought people use: the fast System 1 way, which is common, automatic, intuitive, and

subconscious, and the slow System 2 way, which requires more effort because it is deliberate, logical,

calculating, and conscious. We watched a recorded presentation by Kahneman before the discussion,

and then talked about his ideas for the better part of an hour.

Kahneman’s book discusses research by cognitive scientists over the last half-century on how people

think, reason, and decide. Kahneman did some of this important research with his late colleague Amos

Tversky. Much of their work concentrated on the biases in judgment that influence how people make

financial decisions. They found that investors often reason poorly because of these ingrained

preferences. For example, they tend to estimate probabilities based on how easy it is to picture a result

or how recently such an outcome occurred. They also judge the same probabilities differently based on

whether they are phrased positively or negatively – they view a 90% success rate better than a 10%

failure rate. Kahneman says that many of these bad thinking habits form because Type 1 (analytical)

thinking fatigues people or too much information confuses them. When this happens, Type 2 (intuitive)

thinking takes over. While this type of thinking is fine for many everyday, commonsense choices, it is

not best for decisions that require analyzing or weighing several factors.

One typical emotion that distorts our judgments is the fear of regret that makes us unwilling to accept

losses. This underlies the sunk-cost fallacy – the idea that we have to continue a money-losing

investment because we have put so much time, effort, and money into it. One businessman in our

group said these decisions are always painful but we have to review past investments with fresh eyes

and act as if it were a new investment. As Kahneman would suggest, we have to drop our emotional

commitment and attachment to the project and be willing to abandon it.

Kahneman’s book discusses dozens of such errors in thinking that plague us, whether we be

consumers, staff workers, professionals, or executives. We wrestled with several of them, but everyone

would do well to investigate this topic and continually review their thinking in light of his work.

Thinking, Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman was published by Farrar, Straus, New York, NY, in 2011.

Local Boy Makes Good Southern Connecticut Mensa member Donald Bobowick has been issued a United States Patent. The patent is for a vertical axis wind turbine design. Vertical axis wind turbines have some advantages over the horizontal axis style we see most often. A few of those advantages are:

Vertical axis wind turbines are bird friendly;

They respond to lower wind speeds;

They have the torsional benefits of a long drive shaft;

The generator or pump they are powering can be placed at ground level for easy servicing. The one major disadvantage to vertical axis wind turbines is that they move in the wrong direction (into the wind) for half their rotation. This newly patented design handles this disadvantage. While scalable to large installations, this wind turbine will be ideal for homes, farms, and small businesses.
