SCIS BUZZ

The article in The Telegraph, Metro Section dated 18th November 2017 on Tales of Choice, Strength &

Style shared on Day one of the first Women's Empowerment Festival wherein our Principal, Mr.

John Andrew Bagul was a panelist and gave his views on how a woman of substance can be defined.

Volume 8, Issue 8

NOVEMBER 2017

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents and Well- wishers,

It is accepted that technological advances requires adaptability. Consequent to these advances

behavioral changes occur and to a degree is logical. Certain life style changes which are initially

noticeable are gradually accepted as normal. Essential human natures remain true and society as

whole benefits.

The advent of smart phones and android has however ushered in a phenomenon which is

inexplicable. These gadgets along with all its application has simplified many things and made com-

munication easy. It has been revolutionary in a way and its impact far reaching.

But what should have been an instrument immense utility has actually impacted the mindset in a

negative manner. It has managed to intoxicate the society at large and student community in

particular. In my trip to the US with a group of students ,I was pained to witness young minds

addicted to their phones to an extent that they were oblivious of the surroundings. Applications like

face book and google eye opener have diminished the very purpose of these phones.

Immediate matter for concern is that this trend could eventually impact natural intelligence. We

could soon witness an era where humans behave in robotic manner with little empathy and lesser

intelligence and even without the artificial intelligence of a robot.

Warm regards

John Andrew Bagul

Factory Visit by Class XII's Geography Students

On 18th November, 2017 , seven students of Class XII went to Matashree Vinimay Pvt. Ltd.

for a factory visit which is a part of their curriculum.

The factory basically deals with the production of chips and fryums. Every student had

their questionnaires with them. The questionnaire had questions like details about raw ma-

terials, capital goods, inputs and outputs, labour, their local and wider linkages, land-

use, power supply, water supply, mode of transport, paid-up capital of the unit, stability of

the unit, etc,.

They surveyed the factory and asked questions to workers and even the Managerial staffs. The owner of the factory was present there, Mr. Rohit

Singhania,. He was of great help. He helped us to understand the working of the factory and how the products are made and manufactured. The stu-

dents were amazed to see the manufacturing of the chips and fryms. We even saw the packing sector and other units of

A Three Hour Lesson for Life conducted by ASISC

Even before the hangover of the cyber security workshop of Mr. Rakshit Tandon wore off, SCIS got another opportunity to

participate in a near similar event.Conducted by the Association of Schools for the Indian School Certificate (ASISC) at Ro-

tary Sadan on Saturday, 18th. November 2017, 4 students of SCIS namely, Aniket Ghosh, Aryan Sethi, Deepak Tosawar &

Kaustav Sen of class XI Commerce, accompanied by their mentor teacher Sumit Roy, participated in the seminar cum

workshop. Titled “Judicious use of Social Media”, the seminar was an instant hit from the beginning. The resource person

Ms. Saloni Priya from UMEED, by sheer humour and well researched facts and figures, made the interactive session, a

memorable event. Students and mentor teachers from as many as 64 schools ( The Future Foundation School, Central

Model School, Gems Akademia, Ram Mohan Mission High School to name a few) around the city filled the auditorium bus-

tling with questions and answers from each other. The event was followed by light refreshments.

SCIS was fortunate to take part in such an event, which was primarily meant for empowering students and teacher about

our sheer ignorance on using (misusing) social media. The workshop can claim to be a success and effective if only the les-

sons learnt from it are properly implemented and executed. SCIS surely hopes its students to inculcate these in their daily

life.

Piano Recital by Ms. Jennifer Heemstra On 13th November 2017, Ms. Jennifer Heemstra held a concert in the school auditorium of South City International School. She was accompanied

by Dr James Forger Dean of Michigan State University and Dr Deborah Moriarty Faculty Head of Piano at the same institution.

Dr James Forger is a Saxophonist and has performed both as a chamber artist and a soloist with well established Symphony Orchestras across Eu-

Documentary Show at Inox

On 24th November 2107 ,few teachers and students went to watch a special documentary at Inox in Quest Mall.

DOCUMENTARY –1

· What we see is not everything, there are numerous amount of invisible rays around us, which we cannot see.

For example, radioactive rays .

· Mosquito’s have a special ability through which they can observe the heat zones and flow of blood in our

body.

· On the surface of the lotus leaves there are structures which prevent water to be collected on their sur-

face .Hence, we can use these type of structures on the outer surface of airships to prevent snow from being collected.

In this documentary, they showed us clips related to the following categories:-

· TOO SLOW

· TOO FAST

· TOO HUGE

· TOO SMALL

THE DOCUMENTARY RELATED NATURE WITH SCIENCE.

DOCUMENTARY 2:-

This documentary had clips of astronomy and space. Would we still exist if the asteroid had not hit Earth during

the reign of dinosaurs? The clip showed us that there were astronauts that ventured out but never returned. The farthest humans have managed to

travel is the Moon. Though robot Machines are being sent to Mars to check whether life exists or not.

The Documentary talked about asteroids and the way they are made. When asteroids clash in space they send out rocks which might enter another

magnetic field of a planet and cause problems. Asteroids contain a large amount of energy and if they are used water can be extracted from them.

It is not possible for humans to carry a large amount of fuel. For traveling to long distances we need a lot of fuel which cannot be carried by us while

going to space. For this, scientists are trying to extract fuel from asteroids.

NOTE: This clip was made by The National Geographic US and the INOX head of the Department (East Kolkata) introduced to us this way of

learning. They wanted to make studies interesting with this new way of learning. It was an enriching experience and we totally enjoyed it.

They will be hoisting more shows on further request by Schools with nominal charges.

Uttarakhand Batchtrip From 20-25th November, 2017, 27 of us from Class XII, accompanied by two teachers:

Ms. Susmita Basu and Mr. Richard Gomes travelled to Uttarakhand for our batch

trip, organised by Trailblazers. We'd been looking forward to this trip for a long time,

since this was our last trip together as a batch before our upcoming ISC 2018 Examina-

tion. Without a doubt, we enjoyed to the fullest and made memories which we shall

cherish forever.

Day 1: 20th November, Monday We reached Kolkata airport in the afternoon, and

reached Delhi in the evening. After having our dinner at Domino's Karol Bagh, we

took the overnight train to Dehradun.

Day 2: 21st November, Tuesday We reached Dehradun early in the morning, then

boarded the bus from the railway station to reach our campsite at Viraat Khai after a 3

hour drive. At the campsite, we were allotted our cottages and were introduced to the

instructors who would accompany us for all our activities. Post breakfast, we went out

on a short walk to get acclimatized to the mountain climate. After lunch, we had two

activities - valley crossing and tree jummering. In the evening we had dinner and re-

flected on the day's activities.

Day 3: 22nd November, Wednesday After breakfast, we packed our backpacks and set

out on a long, exhilarating trek to Tiger Falls. The view from the mountains was breathtaking and snow capped peaks were visible in the distance.

Although some of the mountain paths were quite dangerous and some people slipped and bruised themselves, all of us safely made it in the end and

enjoyed getting drenched at the spectacular Tiger Falls. We had a picnic lunch there, and then took the bus to the town of Chakrata, where we

stopped for a while at the local market. On reaching the campsite, we had an evening bonfire followed by team games and dinner.

Day 4: 23rd November, Thursday this was arguably the most exciting day of the trip. We had packed our backpacks with warm clothes and some

necessities, and then set out after breakfast. We were going to spend the night in the wilderness and return only the next morning. First, we stopped

at a junction for two activities: rappelling and rock climbing. The latter was possibly the most challenging, but most of us managed to complete the

task. In the afternoon, we reached Churani, where we were to spend the night. After lunch, we were shown how to set up our tents in groups. Then,

we enjoyed team games, collecting firewood and cooking Maggi for the evening. After sunset, we had a massive bonfire as the night was getting cold-

er by the minute in the wilderness. We were told that we were camping at an altitude of over 7000 ft. All of us thoroughly enjoyed talking about our

experiences, sharing ghost stories and playing games at the bonfire. One team cooked dinner for all of us. We spent the night in sleeping bags, which

was a wonderful experience.

Day 5: 24th November, Friday We witnessed the sunrise in the morning, and then left our tents after tea. We reached our campsite, and then packed

our suitcases. After breakfast, we bid farewell to the campsite and boarded the bus to the Yamunotri Bridge. There we had numerous water activi-

ties in the Yamuna River, including bridge slithering, valley crossing and swimming. Post lunch, we left for Dehradun. In the evening, we spent some

time at Pacific Mall, Dehradun, followed by dinner at Burger King. At night, we took the train back to Delhi.

Day 6: 25th November, Saturday We reached Delhi in the morning, and then had our breakfast at the airport. The afternoon flight to Kolkata

brought us back home, marking the end of an unforgettable journey. Above all, we shall always remember the moments we spent together and I'm

grateful to the school for this opportunity.

BOOKWORMS

The ONRT reading program encourages the chil-

dren to read story books. It helps children use their

imagination devices and sharpens their reading as

well as comprehending skills. The idea that the

whole school and above all the whole nation reads

on that particular day together ignites the minds of

the little children to commit to reading.
