FROM THE PRINCIPAL‟S DESK
Dear Parents and Students,
Our world is now reeling under the excessive load of plastics. It is
accepted world over that single use plastic is a pollutant that needs
immediate attention of the world community. The concerns have been
discussed at various levels and its toxicity quantified. But a
comprehensive ban on use of plastic has not been as forthcoming as is
the need of the hour. Much of it has to do with its extensive use and also
lack of any convenient alternative.
The government has now decided on educating people about the
harmful effects of single use plastic and the importance of recycling.
At our school we have always felt that there is an urgent need to address
this problem. The use of plastic is widespread and that makes the task
even more challenging. The size of the population that needs to be
educated and convinced to refrain from using plastic in mind boggling.
We have accepted the challenge and as you all are aware that we
exploring all avenues to make you all aware of the situation. Our school
has dutifully participated in „the India plog run‟, organized by United
Way India to spread awareness on the subject. They have also taken
part in presentation and Talk Show on A Sustainable Dialogue
Engagement with Youth during Climate Diplomacy week. We are
working towards SDG Goals .Hereinafter; let us refrain from using
plastic. This would be beginning. Further, if you can individually and
collectively convince the people you come across to abandon using
plastic, a movement will have begun.
Warm regards,
John Andrew Bagul

IJM (International Justice Mission) Workshop
On 7th September 2019 the students of South City International School were privileged to have Mrs.Toppo
and her team Mr. Sisir Thanikal and Mrs. Elizabeth Koshy from IJM (International Justice Mission).
The students were briefed about the following points including poverty slavery, cyber crime and safety. The
importance was laid upon “cyber crime and slavery”. Zero tolerance against “human trafficking” is the
motto followed by the International Justice Mission.
The three hour session helped all the students to increase their knowledge about the anti-slavery and how
important it is in our society to raise our voice and speak against injustice.
Mr. Sisir Thanikal guided the students about the differences between Global and India social media tools.
Social Media when used in negative manner becomes weapons of mass distraction. The world of web is
categorized into the dark web (6% of internet), surface web (4% of the social internet ), and the deep web
(covering 90% of the net).
It is extremely essential for the youth to know about the crimes in cyber space hacking, „Salami Attack‟, IRC
(Internet Relay Chat) Crime, cyber stalking and fishing are some crucial types of cyber crime. The students
were also introduced to the Legal Provisions for Online Crime Against Children such as Child Labour Rate,
2017 - Sec 17 A, India Evident Act 1872- Sec 66B, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015
- Sec 75 and 82(1).
The last session was taken over by Mrs. Elizabeth Koshy. She briefed us about Trauma informed care. Post
Dramatic care and its importance on the stress we deal with in over daily lives. She also taught the students
two exercises that could help us in the long run to overcome stress.
Each of the sessions were performed for all of us to learn about some real life experiences and useful
information. Mr. Sisir Thanikal ended the session with his words, “Don‟t act smart! Be smart!”

Teachers' Day Celebration at Victoria Memorial Hall
I do not have enough words to thank you for nominating me to attend the Teachers Day celebration hosted by
Teachers‟ Centre of Loreto at Victoria Memorial on 12 September, 2019.
I arrived at the Memorial with three of my colleagues around 3pm., immediately we were taken to a guided
tour of the memorial‟s museum. The museum exhibits pre-colonial and post-colonial artefacts. It also displays
various Indian art works. Afterward it was followed by hi tea at the new administrative block of the
Memorial.
Teachers day was also celebrated by a presentation from Prof. Dr. Jayanta Sengupta, who is Secretary and
Curator (Director) of the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata. The presentation primarily focused on the rich
wealth and knowledge in the repositories of major museums, with Victoria Memorial Hall as such an example.
The idea was to impress upon teachers that such museums, apart from being natural tourist destinations, also
render themselves as places of learning. The teachers should encourage and motivate students to visit
museums from this perspective.
Take Away:
• Activity Club of the Memorial Hall can train students about the study of museum during an internship programme with no fees. They will serve as
voluntaries for the Museum.
• For Biology students visit to the Memorial can be arranged to see their bottle gardening with variety of flora.

Challenging Challenges (An awareness session on disability)
Date: 6th September, 2019
Venue: World View Suborna Jayanti Bhavan, Jadavpur University Campus
Time: 2:00 PM
Organised by: „Youth 4 jobs‟ in association with forum of students for disabilities
Teachers who attended: Victor Amitava Ray, Atreyi Ghosh Das.
Participating Organisations: Eastern & Soth Eastern Railway; Indian Autism centres.
Synopsis of the workshop: The workshop was conducted by Ms.Shazia Quereshi, Corporate Connect
Manager (East and North East) „Youth 4 Jobs‟ Foundation. The participants could educate on disability
from the following types of activities that was conducted in the workshop -
a) Learning Disability;
The participants were asked to make an entry out from a zigzag diagram kept on a table. The participants
could solve the zigzag diagram only by looking at a mirror kept in front of a table. They were not allowed
to look at the zigzag diagram straight. The participants found it extremely difficult while solving the
diagram by keeping an eye on the mirror. Ms. Quereshi then explained to us that the invisible disabilities
face a similar kind problem while viewing things.
b) Perception Questionnaire;
There was about twenty five questions based on the participant‟s perception about disabilities in the field
of education, in the service sectors and in the society.
c) Autism (Finding Waldo):
This was an extremely difficult task. The participants were asked to find Waldo from a diagram where
more than 1,500 people are shown busy in doing different activities. Most of the participants could not
locate Waldo from the diagram. Ms.Quereshi then explained us that invisible disabilities do suffer such
kind of problems in locating the actual object from a thousand different objects which they view together.
d) A speech on awareness for disabilities:
This was conducted by Ms.Shazia Quereshi and her colleagues. The participants were told that there are
two kinds of disabilities.
I. Visible Disabilities:
Under this category there are following types of disabilities-
i) Visual disability;
ii) Locomotor disability (Locomotor Disability means restriction in the movement of the limbs);
iii) Speech and hearing disability.
II. Invisible Disabilities:
Under this category there are following types of disabilities –
i) Learning Disability;
ii) Autism Disability (A type of developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction,
It also affects a child's educational performance);
iii) Mental Health issues.
e) A Street Play:
A street play was organized by the students of Jadavpur University in regard to the problems the disable people are facing in the various fields of
life. They have wonderfully depicted the exact problems confronted by the disabilities in the field of education, in the corporate world, in society and
while choosing their life partner. „How the disable people are ignored and set aside while applying for corporate jobs‟, „ how they are ill-treated by
our society‟ has been acted out in the street play.
Conclusion: It was an enriching session wherein the participants could gather lot of knowledge about the disabled people. As per one of the
pamphlets distributed by „Youth 4 Jobs‟, the regional facilities manager, Google India, Mr. Manjunath Bhat stated, “ We have found them to be
more honest and productive than non-disabled people actually”. The MNCs like KFC, Amazon, Coca-Cola, Ford, Valeo, MC Donald‟s, Google,
Radisson have employed them in their companies. These MNCs are infact looking out to have more number of disabled people included in their
teams. We are thankful to Ms. Ms.Shazia Quereshi in a very special way for her hospitality, lovely gesture and kind behavior.

Today,2nd September „19 an anti-bullying session was held at the Auditorium for classes 6 and 7. The seminar was conducted by the members of the
Student Council of our school
Sasha Agarwal, the head of the council spoke on the issue and received a great deal of response from the students. Each section of Classes VI and VII
has been assigned a council member whom they can contact and comfortably share their problems. This is a path-breaking initiative as children may
often feel uncomfortable sharing their personal incident with the teachers but have a warm bonding with the senior students.
The name of the council member and the class assigned is as follows:
The discussion included the following points:
• The negative impact of bullying on the physical and emotional wellbeing of a child was discussed.
• It was stated that bullying does not necessarily include physical violence. It may be shaming someone because of their body structure, different
facial features, bodily disability, intellectual ability or socio-cultural background.
• Kind behaviour and support towards fellow students were encouraged. Students were taught to be more sensitive towards others feelings.
• An elaborate conversation on bullying on social media took place. Certain guidelines of using social media like instagram and how to address cyber
bullying and abuse in internet
• Students were encouraged to report an account on social media if it degraded them or their school. They were taught to not adjust themselves to
these derogatory comments but to stand up and fight for their dignity.
• The council members also made everyone aware of the foul comments written in washroom cubicles and classroom tables which will be erased and
the suspected students will be under scanner for such activities in future.
• Children were encouraged to talk about their own experiences.
• Children were rewarded with encouraging words when they shared their problems.
• Children were told that they could approach the council member in need or they could even write emails to them. An email account has been
created just for them to share their problems.
• Various students responded and shared about their bullying experiences.
• One of the students shared the fact that he was indulged in bullying others and understood the trauma people undergo when he himself became a
bully later. He was applauded by the audience for opening up about and being straight forward.
• Students were advised that in case they face bullying they need to open up and speak up about it so that it gets resolved at the earliest.
• The council members assured that students can come up to them and share their experiences so that they can help them and do the needful at the
earliest. The council will even make an email id where students
and their parents can mail their bullying experiences in case the
students doesn‟t want to share in person. This will be kept com-
pletely confidential.
The response from the students was remarkable. They eagerly
shared their experiences. They felt confident and loved on being
