Science is experiencing a huge growth in popularity as people want to know more about the world in which we live, how we can make the best use of its scarce resources and reverse the impacts left behind by past generations.

It has purpose-built laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment, including a high field NMR spectrometer, a scanning electron microscope, and a gene sequencer. Science is such a hands-on discipline, it would be wrong to keep you away from the laboratory! From day one you’ll learn how to do as well as think – through many sessions involving experimental work and developing your practical skills.

SHOWCASEWe understand that full-time study isn’t for everyone. That’s why many of our degrees also offer the flexibility of part-time learning. You can take your modules over a time period that is right for you. For undergraduate students who don’t meet our entry requirements, a Science Foundation Year is also available at Stafford College and Stoke-on-Trent College.

FLEXIBLEIn your final year, you will be able to showcase your skills to employers at our GradEX event. In addition to this, our Science Employers’ Careers Fair and student conferences will give you every opportunity to network and gain vital knowledge about ‘where next’.

The School of Sciences at Staffordshire University has a long and proud history of offering opportunities for people to study science that is of real-world relevance.

Fully committed to providing the very best environment in which you can hone your skills, in October 2012 we moved into a brand new, purpose-built Science Centre that is home to our teaching and research.

OUR SUBJECT AREAS:BIOLOGICAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

Biological Sciences covers a diverse range of highly relevant and up-to-date courses. Taught in specialist laboratories, subjects such as Ecology, Human Biology and Biomedical Science have their own distinct direction and concentrate on different aspects within the rapidly moving, cutting edge life sciences.

To give you the broadest possible expertise, teaching includes practical and problem-based learning, supported by opportunities for work experience to equip you with real-world skills and develop you as a scientific practitioner.

Many of our specialists in Biomedical and Biological Sciences are actively involved in research and contribute to scientific understanding and knowledge. Their interests range from the effects of anti-cancer drugs on cultured cells, to biochemical signalling by mosquitoes and the ecology of green walls and field margins.

FORENSIC AND CRIME SCIENCEForensic and Crime Science spans a breadth of topics that start at the crime scene and conclude in the courtroom. Our courses in Forensic Science involve laboratory-based investigations. You’ll learn how to examine physical, chemical and biological evidence recovered from the scene of a crime, and how your conclusions can be used to assess the strength of a case. By comparison, Policing and Criminal Investigation is more concerned with policing and legal powers and the investigative process that is applied to criminal cases.

Our Forensic and Crime Science tutors are from university, policing and forensic backgrounds. Several are at the forefront of developments in areas of forensic science and policing. Others are active in the leadership of professional bodies, in national developments, and in national and international research projects.

GEOGRAPHY AND THE ENVIRONMENTWhen it comes to teaching quality, you don’t have to take our word for it. Geography at Staffordshire University is consistently highly rated by the Student Satisfaction Survey, the Guardian higher education league tables and the Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency. Innovative and flexible, our courses offer both original and contemporary content – such as environment and sustainability, mountain leadership, physical and human geography. Each course also involves plenty of hands-on fieldwork experience.

The interests of our Geography tutors and professors span both geography and the environment. Several staff members are recognised for their contributions to international research, in fields including glaciers and hazard geomorphology, GIS and spatial modelling, and cultural creativity in cities.

“Choose Staffordshire University and you’ll benefit from top quality teaching from lecturers who will always go the extra mile for you. Friendly and helpful, they really know their subjects and will be there to support your learning.

They also place considerable importance on fieldwork. For example, my modules have taken me to a number of places, including the Peak District and the West Country, where I carried out water quality surveys alongside my peers.

In Year 3, I even travelled to Barcelona to investigate the microclimates of the city’s streets. This trip was incredibly important to me, as my dissertation was centred on the impact that trees can have on the air quality of inner cities.

As part of a research placement module, I was selected to work with local residents in Stoke-on-Trent to create the Hartshill Heritage Trail – a selection of walks around an area of the city that was once home to some of the region’s most famous potters. This involved planning the various routes, pinpointing landmarks and producing a printed guide. As always, I received incredible levels of support from my tutors.

As for my next steps, I’m passionate about environmental issues and plan to complete an MSc in Air Quality Management and Control. After that I’d like to work as an air quality specialist in the field of engineering, before completing a PhD.”

“In Year 1, I gained a solid understanding of both theoretical and practical knowledge, including the various protocols that must be observed at a crime scene. This helped equip me for Years 2 and 3, when I gained valuable academic knowledge and honed my practical skills.

The University’s crime scene house provided an incredibly realistic learning environment, while sessions in the mock courtroom and at Hanley’s former County Court enabled me to practice giving evidence and withstanding cross-examination. But it wasn’t just about facilities, the teaching was excellent.

During my studies, I also benefitted from a six-week placement with Staffordshire Police, working with Scenes of Crime Officers. This experience proved highly valuable when it came to completing my projects. My first graduate-level job after leaving the University was working as a DNA analyst with a laboratory in Oxford. In October 2010, I then moved to a leading forensics services provider in Cheshire, where my dissertation into retrieving DNA from cigarette butts helped me to secure a role as a forensic examiner.

In 2012, I was then promoted to the position of Reporting Officer. I now tell other examiners what to look for and act as an expert witness in court.

Whenever I get the opportunity, I love coming back to the University to share my knowledge with current students. In May 2013, I also helped judge the work of this year’s Forensic Science graduates at the GradEx event. That was a real honour.”

The skills and knowledge you will gain studying this degree will open up a range of careers in the field of wildlife management and conservation. Many of our graduates find employment with conservation bodies or in the private sector, working as environmental consultants. Others go on to research positions or enrol on one of our specialist masters courses in conservation.

This degree is designed for everyone who is fascinated by animals – in particular, ecology, behaviour and conservation. By the end of the course, you will have expertise in animal surveying and identification and an in-depth knowledge of animal conservation management requirements.

The first year develops your understanding of the core scientific areas, including ecology, evolution, biology of organisms and biological processes. You will follow a programme of practical work and workshop activities to help you understand and become proficient in key biological skills ranging from fieldwork-sampling to the use of computers for analysis.

Year 2 provides an in-depth study of adaption and survival, behaviour, ecology and field biology. A residential fieldcourse will develop your field-based research skills and provide you with experience in key habitat survey techniques. Professional practice and placement provides an essential step in your progression as an independent researcher and fundamentally underpins your final year research dissertation. This course offers flexibility with the opportunity to study areas from molecular biology to ecology. You may maintain a broad study of the biological sciences or focus on a specific range of topics, allowing you to choose your own programme based on your interests and aspirations. BSc(Hons) Biology provides many career routes for graduates and is a particularly useful breadth of knowledge for those who aspire to teaching the subject.

At a glance

This degree provides an excellent education in biology with an emphasis on microbiology, developing scientific investigative skills based around a core of applied, clinical and molecular aspects of microorganisms. The theoretical knowledge and practical skills you gain are in demand throughout a range of careers such as biotechnology and food-based industries. The degree also provides an excellent platform for a career in research or teaching.

The first year of the course provides a broad underpinning of biology and takes you from fundamental biochemistry and the structure of cells, through to the diversity of life and the interaction and behaviour of organisms at a population level. There is an integrated programme of practical work and workshops to help you to understand and become proficient in key biological skills, ranging from aseptic techniques to designing your own practical investigations.

Microbiology modules in the second and third year of your degree cover key aspects of microbial physiology and genetics, microorganisms as pathogens and how infectious diseases are diagnosed, and the role of microorganisms in the environment. Additionally you will have a wide choice of stimulating and topical modules from molecular biology and genetics, human biology and biochemistry through to ecology and conservation. Professional practice and placement focuses on the development of skills required to be a professional microbiologist and includes work experience. Your ability to research independently will be developed through workshops and plenary sessions to cover planning and designing experimental work, data analysis and scientific communication. The final year project allows you to further develop your practical and analytical skills on a research topic of interest to you.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), meaning that on successfully completing your degree and a year of in-service training, you can apply to become a registered biomedical scientist in the NHS.

We also offer BSc(Hons) Applied Biomedical Science which is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This provides the opportunity for a limited number of students to complete the in-service training, in a hospital placement during their degree, ready to be in a position to apply for registration at the time of graduation.

The first year covers the principles of biological and biomedical science that underpin the rest of your course. Theory topics such as molecules to cells, biology of organisms and biological processes are complemented by a programme of practical work and workshops that help you understand, and become proficient in, key biological skills.

In the second and third year, the material is more specialised and is in accordance with IBMS accreditation. Theory modules address the biology and diagnosis of disease. There is a strong emphasis on practical training through clinically-based practical modules. Professional practice and placement provides an essential step in your development as an independent researcher and underpins your final year studies.

The final year dissertation allows you to apply the practical skills you have developed to an independent piece of research. This is supported by relevant modules covering the specific disciplines in biomedical science – some of which are delivered by practising biomedical scientists.

Forensic Biology is the application of advanced applied biological techniques to forensic investigation. This course focuses on the policing and investigation of crime scenes and the subsequent evidence analysis. It is ideal if you wish to pursue a career in the Police, or other investigative agency, or if you have a strong interest in forensic, criminalistics, or crime scene science.

During Year 1, policing and forensic topics are covered, in particular, the power of arrest and searching of both individuals and property. You study crime scene documentation by the use digital photography, sketching, and contemporaneous notes, the identification and recovery of evidence, both witness and physical, methods for analysis and interpretation of results and the science involved in the analysis of evidential samples.

These unique courses provide the opportunity to study a degree in physical or human geography, specialising in mountain leadership, which will also lead to the Mountain Leader Training Board (MLTB) Mountain Leadership professional qualification. The MLTB Mountain Leadership award is an important qualification for students intending to develop a career in outdoor education, recreation management, outdoor pursuits or expedition leadership. DEFERRED ENTRYIf you wish to defer entry to your chosen course for one year we’ll still welcome your application

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?After we’ve considered your application, UCAS will notify you of our decision. If you’re successful, we’ll also invite you to visit us and attend one of our Visit Days. In some cases, you may be invited to attend an interview before we decide whether to offer you a place.

AFTER RECEIVING YOUR RESULTSHowever confident you are about achieving the results you need, things don’t always go to plan. Prepare for all eventualities. If you don’t meet the precise conditions of the offer we made you, don’t worry. It may still be possible for us to offer you a place on your chosen course. Contact us for advice as soon as you can.

CLEARINGThe UCAS clearing process gives students an additional opportunity to find a place. Most universities prefer to consider students who made an application first time round.

UCAS EXTRAThis is the opportunity to apply for another course if you have used all five choices and not secured a place. UCAS Extra runs from the end of February until the end of June.

ENROLMENTEnrolment for full-time and part-time courses usually takes place in September, with teaching starting soon after. As some courses do vary, please check out the enrolment times for your particular course.
