Cells

According to the cell theory, proposed over 150 years ago:

All living things are composed of cells. All cells come from pre-existing cells. Cells are the smallest units of life.

Most cells are very, very small, so tiny that they can only be seen with the aid of a microscope. Your body is composed of billions of cells! Within your body, cells have different functions. We have blood cells, skin cells, brain cells...the list goes on. Despite their differences, cells in living organisms for the most part have similar structures and functions

CELLS AND OUR BODIES

Humans are multicellular organisms that are made of many cells. Cells with a common origin and

similar function form tissues in the body such as muscles. Several kinds of tissues may join to form

an organ such as the kidney and liver. These organs carry out specific functions for the body. Then

many organs work together to form body systems such as the digestive system and circulatory

system.

ANIMAL CELLS

Animal cells are quite similar to plant cells in terms of their cytoplasm, cell membranes, and

ribosomes. However, there are lots of differences as well. Animal cells do not have cell walls to

protect the inside of the cell. In addition, animals can think, move, and respond to the environment

due to the presence of brain cells.

PLANT CELLS

Plant cells are rigid due to the presence of cell walls that protect the inside of the cell. In addition,

plant cell organelles include chloroplasts, which are responsible for photosynthesis. Plants cannot

move, since they lack the locomotive organs of animals. However, plants can also respire, or prepare

their own food using green leaves, which animals cannot.

1. What is a Cell? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. What is the different between the plant and the animal cell? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. List five different parts of the cell:1. ______________________________2. ______________________________3. ______________________________4. ______________________________5. ______________________________

4. Circle F if the sentence is False and T if the sentence is True

The cell is the smallest part of the living thing F T

The prokaryotic cell has a small nucleus F T

Eukaryotic cell is bigger and has more organelles F T

The animal cell and the prokaryotic cell are the same F T

The plant cell has mitochondria F T

5. What is the main function of the mitochondria? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. What is the main function of the nucleus? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. Write the parts of the nucleus? ________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

8. Draw the eukaryotic and the prokaryotic cell

9. Color the animal and the plant cell and write their organelle’s name
