School Matters FROM THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE
Augustus (63 BC – AD 14) was a Roman statesman and military leader who was the first emperor of the Roman Empire, reigning from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD. He is well known for the fact that he was the Caesar that ordered the census which led to Joseph and Maria travelling to Bethlehem where Jesus Christ, our Lord, was born. August is the eighth month in our calendar year and was named in honour of Augustus Caesar in 8 BC. Welcome to August 2019 AD##. During the last few weeks the mercury fell below zero on one or two occasions and everybody was reminded of the fact that it is still winter. With the recent afternoon temperatures being in the mid-twenties, I hope you do not forget that the weather in our beloved country is among the best in the world. Talking about the ebbs and the flows of life, appreciate the basic things in life like good health, friends and family. Our registrar, Mr Ernst Raubenheimer, who underwent massive heart bypass surgery at the beginning of July, is recuperating well at home, and will be back in his office on Monday. To him and everyone out there battling with health issues, may our best wishes and prayers carry you and give you strength. Our revues are out of the blocks and all the best to every learner, teacher and parent for the hectic revue season lying ahead. Hats off to Midstream’s first and u/14 rugby sides who both are Blue Bulls champions and have qualified for the quarter-final of the Virsekerbeker competition after beating Hans Moore on Saturday. A special word of congratulations to our u/14, u/15 and u/16 girls’ hockey sides who were involved in play-offs on Tuesday and a salute to our u/15s who beat Hoërskool Pietersburg in Polokwane to qualify for their Noordvaal finals. Congratulations to every boy and girl who was elected to the Midstream Council. To those of you that missed out, Carpe Diem. You are invited to join the various sub-committees of the Council and make a difference. All the best to the new prefects, may you follow in the footsteps of Tishca, Jano and their team and lead Midstream towards an even brighter future. ## BCE (Before Common Era) and BC (Before Christ) mean the same thing - before year 1 CE (Common Era). This is the same as the year AD 1 (Anno Domini); the latter means “in the year of the Lord,” often translated as “in the year of our Lord.”
GRADE 9 SUBJECT CHOICE INFORMATION EVENING Midstream College is hosting a grade 9 subject choice information evening in the hall on Wednesday, 7 August 2019 at 18:30. There will be an opportunity for parents to speak to the subject managers afterwards. It is of the utmost importance that all grade 9 learners and parents attend this meeting as learners will be handing in their final grade 10 subject choices on Monday, 12 August.
