Some simple reminders:

Ensure all clothing and equipment is clearly marked. Use lockers to keep valuable items safe, especially in PE lessons.

Mobile phones are allowed in school but if they are seen in lessons they will be confiscated. Parents will then be asked to collect the item at the end of the day.

Equally, the school can take no responsibility if a student brings a mobile phone into school and it is lost or stolen.

A er an extremely busy year, the school con nues to move forward. The Educa onal Partnership is ensuring joint working across the schools and many exci ng projects are in progress, with more planned for the next academic year. A copy of the policy agreed by all the schools within the Thorpe St Andrew Educa onal Partnership has been issued to all

parents. To summarise the key elements:

1. A student must arrive in school by 8.20 am. Lateness is not acceptable.

2. If your child is unwell, it is your responsibility to telephone the school’s absence line on the first day of illness.

3. A endance will be monitored closely by the school and you can view this on ‘My Child at School’.

4. Support will be given to students with illness but unauthorised absence is likely to result in Court ac on against a

parent.

5. HOLIDAYS are not authorised during term me unless excep onal circumstances are iden fied.

It may not always be possible to get appointments outside of school me. If students have to leave school early for

appointments or for any other reason, they must go to the South Site Recep on to sign out. A note of explana on must

be brought to the Form Tutor beforehand reques ng to leave school early and the le er also presented to the

Recep onist.

It is helpful if, when you telephone, you are able to give your child’s form to enable quick iden fica on of the person

you need to speak to. You may like to know the significance of the form name: the first le er iden fies the ini al of

the house, for example Mira. Then there is a number ‐ between 1 and 9 ‐ which is simply to differen ate between

the nine forms in each house. The next three le ers iden fy the Form Tutor ‐ JPS is Ms Sinclair. So M2JPS will

immediately tell us that your child is in Form 2 in Mira House and their Form Tutor is Ms Sinclair.

The School Day

Before the journey students should:

Be at the pick‐up point in good me, at least ten minutes before the stated me.

Wait in an orderly manner, away from the road side if possible.

Keep clear of the vehicle un l it has stopped.

Allow other passengers to get off the vehicle before boarding.

Get on the vehicle one at a me, without pushing and have their travel pass ready to show the driver.

Wait for 30 minutes, if transport is running late, before returning home. Please make sure you have

arrangements in place in case this should happen.

During the journey students should:

Remain seated, facing forward at all mes, whilst wearing the seat belts if provided.

Keep the gangway clear of bags and equipment.

Do as the driver says if there is an emergency or breakdown.

Not speak to or distract the driver, except in an emergency.

Not throw things in or out of the vehicle.

Not smoke, eat or drink.

Not shout or use foul and abusive language.

Not try to operate the doors.

Not damage the vehicle in any way. Parents may be invoiced for the repair of any damage caused.

Not use mobile phones or other electronic devices for taking photos or videos.

At the end of the journey students should:

Stay seated un l the vehicle stops.

Ensure they take all their belongings with them.

Use the proper exit and wait un l the driver opens the door.

Get off the vehicle in an orderly manner.

Not cross the road in front of, or behind, the vehicle, but wait un l the vehicle has moved off.

Stay well clear while the vehicle is moving off.

Be sensible and have a safe journey.

Please remember that your children are your responsibility before they get on the vehicle in the morning and a er

they alight at the end of the day.

Show My Homework

‘Show My Homework’ is an online homework calendar which was launched at Thorpe St Andrew School

and Sixth Form earlier this year. The homework calendar can be reached through the school website –

as shown here.

Students and parents can filter tasks by year, subject or teacher to

access the full instruc ons and deadlines for homework tasks set.

This screen gives a less clu ered view of the calendar and allows for

quick choices.

Students can also use their school email address as a personal log‐in to ‘Show My Homework’, which will generate

a personalised version of the calendar. This will display only

the homework set for the individual student, including full

details and deadlines. To do this, students just have to click on

the LOGIN bu on on the calendar. This will bring up the

window shown to the right.

Click on the red ‘Sign in with Google’ bu on and enter a school

email address (@nsix.org.uk) to sign in.

We believe that ‘Show My Homework’ is an essen al tool for

student organisa on and planning. No more lost homework

sheets, no need to spend lesson me copying down instruc ons into planners and all the necessary templates, web‐

links and resources to hand, are just a few of the advantages of using ‘Show My Homework’.

(Paper copies of homework tasks will always be made available on request to the teacher se ng homework).

How Do I Access the Website?

The system can be accessed through the ‘Parents’ sec on of the school website or by going directly to www.mychildatschool.com

You will be provided with your own personal log‐in details to the system as a ma er of course. When you have this informa on you will be able to connect to a secure internet site which provides informa on about your child at school.

What Can I See?

As the My Child At School website reads informa on directly from the school’s Management Informa on System you can see informa on in ‘real me’.

Is It Easy To Use?

The website is very intui ve and user friendly. You can organise your home page as you wish by dragging the individual boxes around the screen. The tabs at the top of the page will take you to more detailed informa on on each heading.

Is It Up To Date?

A endance, Timetable, School Calendar and Behaviour informa on is accessed directly from the school when you log‐in. Therefore, it is always up to date.

Assessment reports are issued throughout the year and prior to Parent Consulta on Evenings so you will always have access to the latest published informa on.

A Guide To The Rules for Students, Parents and Teachers

All students will be expected to be in the full correct uniform from September 2015

The Governors of Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form believe it is important that there exists a School Uniform Policy for the main school and that it is followed by all students, enforced by their parents and the school. A uniform helps support the ethos of the school and a student’s pride and commitment to being part of it. Clear guidelines must make it easy to follow; the items should be appropriate for engaging in learning ac vi es; and there needs to be a balance between quality and cost.

The uniform policy enables parents to follow wri en guidelines. There are no excep ons, and parents should not waste money on items which are not iden fied in the policy. Please do not accept the comment ‘well, everybody else wears it’. Equally, please do not send a student to school who is not in uniform unless there is very good reason and a note is wri en by yourselves in the student planner (not on paper). We frequently hear the excuse ‘It’s in the wash’ – an excuse which you, as parents, would not support!

Following the code can reduce conflict for parents and avoid the cost of replacing inappropriate items.

At Home

Students must take full responsibility for wearing the uniform provided for them. Many already do, but some ‘push the system’. Examples include wearing hooded tops, skinny jeans, studded or large buckled belts and trainers. These items are not acceptable when in school, travelling to or from school, at break mes, lunch mes or for crossing the site.

Students

It is the job of all staff to ensure the Governors’ policy on uniform is followed.

The clear message from parents, in a number of forums, is that they want the policy followed by all. Obviously, Governors and staff agree with this. A student not in uniform will result in a call to home asking for correct uniform to be delivered or agreement for the student to go home and change.

The School

Our uniform code aims to help students learn how to present themselves in an appropriate manner and is based on common sense. It also highlights the need for safety when undertaking a range of school ac vi es.

Uniform should be smart and clean at all mes and worn in a correct business‐like manner.

Hairstyles should not be extreme in either style or colour and makeup must be subtle and discreet.

Rings and other jewellery are not considered suitable for school due to health and safety reasons.

A maximum of one pair of plain stud earrings (not hoops or other styles) can be worn, but facial and other body piercings are poten ally dangerous and so not permi ed. (Earrings must be removed for PE, so please think carefully about when you allow ears to be pierced.)

Ear tunnels, stretchers and plugs are not permi ed.

This policy cannot list every item that is acceptable or not acceptable. For example, we have been asked if mul ‐coloured striped socks would be allowed. Our view is that they would not be in keeping with the rest of the uniform style. We simply consider if the item is appropriate for school in its style or colour, or should it be part of a student’s wardrobe for when they are not in school, and ask you to do likewise.

Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form is the Data Controller for the purposes of the Data Protec on Act. We collect informa on from you, and may receive informa on about you from your previous school and the Learning Records Service. We hold this personal data and use it to:

This data may only be used or passed on for specific purposes as allowed by law. From me to me the school is required to pass on some of this data to local authori es, the Department for Educa on (DfE), and to agencies that are prescribed by law. All these are data controllers in respect of the data they receive, and are subject to the same legal constraints in how they deal with the data.

Students, as data subjects, have certain rights under the Data Protec on Act, including a general right to be given access to personal data held about them by any data controller. The presump on is that by the age of 12, a child has sufficient maturity to understand their rights and to make an access request themselves if they wish. In Addi on for Secondary Schools ‐ Youth Services Informa on Only (formerly Connexions)

The LA has a statutory duty “to encourage, enable or assist young people’s par cipa on in educa on or training” (Sec on 68(1) of the Educa on and Skills Act 2008). The LA therefore has a key role in ensuring that all 16 and 17 year olds are made aware that they should be offered a place in Post‐16 educa on or training, to work with partners to shape educa on and training provision to meet young people’s needs and to collect and record the offers made to young people to help target resources on those who have s ll to find a suitable place.

Once you are aged 13 or over, the school is legally required to pass on certain informa on to the LA to enable them to carry out this duty. This informa on contains the name, address and date of birth of the student and name and address of the parent, and any further relevant informa on.

However, parents, or the student themselves, if aged 16 or over, can ask that no informa on beyond name, address and date of birth of student and name and address of parent be passed on to providers of Youth Services. The Department of Health (DH) uses aggregate informa on (at school year group level) about students' height and weight for research and sta s cal purposes, to inform, influence and improve health policy and to monitor the performance of the Health Service as a whole. The DH will base performance management discussions with Strategic Health Authori es. The Department of Health will also provide aggregate PCT level data to the Healthcare Commission for performance assessment of the Health Service. www.dh.gov.uk

Ofsted uses informa on about the progress and performance of students to help inspectors evaluate the work of schools, to assist schools in their self‐evalua on, and as part of their assessment of the effec veness of educa on ini a ves and policy. Ofsted also uses informa on about the views of children and young people, to inform children’s services inspec ons in Local Authority areas. Inspec on reports do not iden fy individual students. Primary Care Trusts (PCT) use informa on about students for research and sta s cal purposes, to monitor the performance of local health services and to evaluate and develop them. The sta s cs are used in such a way that individual students cannot be iden fied from them. Informa on on the height and weight of individual students may however be provided to the child and their parents and this will require the PCTs to maintain details of students’ names for this purpose for a period designated by the Department of Health following the weighing and measuring process. PCTs may also provide individual schools and local authori es with aggregate informa on on students’ height and weight.

The Learning Records Service ‐ The Learning Records Service is designed to support learners at all levels to access, manage and use their own achievement informa on ‐ such as qualifica ons, awards or training received as they progress through educa on, training and lifelong learning. The Learning Records Service, part of Informa on Management (IM) Services, provides shared services across the educa on sector. The Learning Records Service is built on the principle of collect once, use many mes and used by all that are en tled to do so. At the start and end of the day, the area around the school entrances has become unsafe, mainly as a result of cars stopping to drop or collect students.

If you are using your car to drop off or collect, please park safely in these areas and then your child can walk

School dinners provide a healthy, nutritious and tasty meal.

Research suggests that a healthy school dinner may improve concentration levels.

Menus are changed regularly and can be viewed online.

How it works:

If your child is entitled to Free School Meals

they collect a disc from South Site Reception at either

Break or Lunch Time.

The disc is worth £2.10 and can be spent at any food outlet

within the school.

However, the disc cannot be split so your child can use it

only once a day.

The health and wellbeing of students is a prime concern of Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form. It is

also shared by Edwards & Blake. With years of experience in education catering we provide nutritious, varied

and interesting meal choices to suit all tastes and dietary requirements throughout the school. Our food is

always fresh, homemade and utilises the best locally sourced ingredients.

National standards for school food mean that schools provide all students choosing a school lunch with a

healthy and balanced range of food and drinks to choose from. Food based standards also apply across the

school day including breakfast and mid‐morning break. School lunches must include a portion of fruit and a

portion of vegetables for each student and there are strict controls on the nutritional content.

By choosing school lunches, not only will you be saving yourself the time and hassle of preparing a packed

lunch every day, but you can also be sure that your child is getting the range and amount of food that will

help contribute to their health and well‐being.

Lost Property Procedure

Every week we receive a large number of items at the lost property point in the

South Site Recep on and unfortunately we are unable to store items due to a lack

of space.

Our procedure for dealing with lost property is as follows:

Lost property that can be iden fied by name will be returned to the student.

Lost property that cannot be iden fied will be retained for a maximum of one

half term and then sent to our Rag Bag Recycling container to raise funds for

the school.

All items should be clearly labelled with the student’s name and form in order

that we may return lost items to their righ ul owners.

The Rag Bag Tex le Collec on Scheme

The 'Rag Bag' recycling scheme has been developed to provide regular fundraising for schools, clubs,

nurseries and various organisa ons within the UK. The scheme increases awareness about tex le recycling

and by increasing recycling rates we can help the environment by ensuring less material goes to landfill.

Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form will be paid 40 pence for every kilogram of tex les collected. We

are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds with every collec on made, which will go towards achievable

projects not funded by our regular/normal income stream.

Through Rag Bag we will be able to help recycle tex les and clothing that may have ended up going to

landfill sites. It is es mated that approximately 1.75 million tonnes of clothing waste is produced in the UK

every year. Out of this vast tonnage around 1.2 million tonnes is unnecessarily sent to landfill sites.

If we can divert some of this tonnage away from landfills, we can directly help the environment and

provide good quality clothing to some of the poorest developing na ons in the world.

We can accept the following items:

All mens’, ladies’ and children’s clothing.

Paired shoes ( ed together).

Handbags, bags, es and belts.

So toys.

Blankets.

Underwear to include socks, ghts, pants, bras etc...

Household tex les to include towels, bed linen, curtains etc...

We cannot accept the following items:

Duvets both synthe c and feathered.

Carpets.

Rugs.

Soiled or wet clothing.

Collect your unwanted items at home and simply drop them in the Rag Bag collec on container located in

the school’s South Site lower car park. Special bags can be collected from either South or North Site

Recep on, or you can use carrier bags or dust bin bags.

Low grade tex les are made into industrial wiping cloths. Good quality clothing is transported to Africa

and other developing na ons where your old clothes are re‐used.

By recycling you can really help other people, the environment and add to your child’s school funds.
