The Fourth Advent Sunday and Christmas

The True Meaning of Christmas Christmas has become a univer-sal holiday season for many peo-ple. For this reason, Christmas holds a special meaning to Chris-tians and non-Christians alike. It may mean spending quality time with friends and family or enjoy-ing old and new traditions. For others, it may mean giving gifts and selfless service to those in need. Christians commemorate and celebrate the birth and life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Sav-ior. Additionally, for Catholics, Christmas means deepening our sense of holiness, especially through the Sacraments of Rec-onciliation and Eucharist. The Church gave us the Twelve Days of Christmas. Unlike the silly song, theses twelve days are feasts between Christmas Day and the Epiphany hold a purpose. These days include Saint Stephen, Saint John the Evangel-

ist, the Holy Innocents, the Holy Family, Mary the Mother of God, Saint Basil (Doctor of the Church), Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (the first native-born American saint), Saint John Neu-man, and a few quiet days in be-tween. Christmas is too important to confine to a single day. Each of the feasts that we celebrate between Christmas and Epiphany deepen the real meaning of Christmas itself.

The true meaning of Christmas may be summarized in one word, “Emmanuel,” “God is with us.” Christmas may not be completely understood or heart-felt if it were celebrated as a single com-memoration. God came to the humankind and has been with us ever since. He cried with the mothers of thousands of children who were massacred by King Herod. He traveled with the Three Wise Men in search for truth and salvation. He lived the model Holy Family and taught us how to be parents and children. He showed us how to live a quiet life, and open ourselves for God’s

graces. He endured and com-forted Saint Stephen, the first martyr, and countless others who sacrificed their lives and died for their faith. He worked tirelessly alongside Saint Elizabeth Seton, other saints, and nameless men and women. He did so, to teach us how to share the great gifts of faith and grace, and serving oth-ers. You see, no matter our cir-cumstances or who we are, God has always been with us. He has shared our joy and tears. The true meaning of Christmas may only be understood and felt when we personally experience “Emmanuel” in our own life.

This Christmas, before we return the unwanted presents, toss the Christmas tree, box up our deco-rations, and stock up for New Year’s Eve, let us take action. Let us deepen our sense of holiness in “Emmanuel,” through grace and sacraments in the first Twelve Days of Christmas the Church has planned for us.

El cuarto domingo de Adviento y Navidad

El verdadero significado de la Navidad

La Navidad se ha convertido en una temporada de vacaciones universal para muchas personas. Por esta razón, la Navidad tiene un significado especial para cristianos y no cristianos por igual. Puede significar pasar tiempo de calidad con amigos y familiares o disfrutar tradiciones. Para otros, puede significar dar regalos y servicio desinteresado a los necesitados. Los cristianos conmemoran y celebran el nacimiento y la vida de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el Salvador. Además, para los católicos, Navidad significa profundizar nuestro sentido de santidad, especialmente a través de los sacramentos de la Reconciliación y la Eucaristía. La Iglesia nos dio los Doce Días de Navidad. A diferencia de la canción tonta, estos doce días son fiestas entre el día de Navidad y la Epifanía tienen un propósito. Este tiempo incluye días festivos de varios Santos: San Esteban, San Juan el Bautista, los Santos

Inocentes, la Sagrada Familia, María la Madre de Dios, San Basilio (Doctor de la Iglesia), Santa Isabel Ann Seton (la primera santa nativa de los Estados Unidos), San Juan Neuman, y algunos días tranquilos en el medio. La Navidad es demasiado importante como para limitarla a un solo día. Cada una de las fiestas que celebramos entre Navidad y Epifanía profundiza el verdadero significado de la Navidad.

El verdadero significado de la Navidad se puede resumir en una palabra, "Emmanuel", "Dios está con nosotros". La Navidad no puede ser completamente comprendida o sentida de corazón si se celebrara como una sola conmemoración. Dios vino a la humanidad y ha estado con nosotros desde entonces. Lloró con las madres de miles de niños que fueron masacrados por el rey Herodes. Viajó con los Reyes Magos en busca de la verdad y la salvación. Vivió la Sagrada Familia modelo y nos enseñó cómo ser padres e hijos. Nos mostró cómo vivir una vida tranquila y abrirnos a las gracias de Dios. Soportó y consoló a San Esteban, el primer mártir, e incontables personas que

sacrificaron sus vidas y murieron por su fe. Trabajó incansablemente junto a Santa Isabel Seton, otros santos y hombres y mujeres sin nombre. Él lo hizo, para enseñarnos cómo compartir los grandes dones de fe y gracia, y servir a los demás. Ya ves, no importa nuestras circunstancias o quiénes somos, Dios siempre ha estado con nosotros. Él ha compartido nuestra alegría y nuestras lágrimas. El verdadero significado de la Navidad solo se puede entender y sentir cuando experimentamos personalmente a "Emmanuel" en nuestra propia vida.

En esta Navidad, antes de devolver los regalos no deseados, tirar el árbol de Navidad, armar nuestras decoraciones y abastecerse para la víspera de Año Nuevo, vamos a tomar medidas. Profundicemos nuestro sentido de santidad en "Emmanuel", a través de la gracia y los sacramentos en los primeros Doce Días de Navidad que la Iglesia ha planeado para nosotros.

Chúa Nhật Thứ Tư Mùa Vọng và Lễ Giáng Sinh – ngày 25

Tháng 12 năm 2017 – B Lễ Giáng Sinh trở thành mùa lễ nghỉ quốc tế cho nhiều người- Công Giáo cũng như không Công Giáo, với những ý nghĩa đặc biệt kể cả việc dành nhiều thời giờ với bạn bè và gia đình, vui hưởng những truyền thống cũ mới, trao tặng quà mừng và những dịch vụ bác ái cho những người thiếu thốn. Các Kitô hữu tưởng niệm và mừng ngày sinh nhật của Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Đấng Cứu Thế. Đối với những người Công Giáo, Lễ Giáng Sinh có nghĩa là làm đậm sâu ý nghĩa thánh thiện của chúng ta qua việc lãnh nhận Bí Tích Hoà Giải và Thánh Thể. Giáo Hội đã có lý do khi cho chúng ta Mười Hai ngày của Lễ Giáng Sinh (không phải như bài hát kỳ cục nào đó)- những ngày lễ giữa Lễ Giáng Sinh và Lễ Hiển Linh: Lễ Gíang Sinh quá quan trọng cho chúng ta để chỉ giới hạn nó vào một ngày. Và mỗi ngày lễ chúng ta mừng giữa Lễ Giáng Sinh và Hiển Linh, bắt đầu từ Lễ Thánh Stêphanô, rồi Lễ Thánh Gioan Thánh Sử, và đến Lễ

Các Thánh Anh Hài, Lễ Thánh Gia, Lễ Đức Mẹ Là Mẹ Thiên Chúa, Lễ Thánh Basiliô ( Tiến Sĩ Giáo Hội), Lễ Thánh Elisabeth Ann Seton (Thánh Người Mỹ đầu tiên), thánh Gioan Newman, và những ngày tĩnh lặng ở khoảng giữa-để đào sâu ý nghĩa thực sự của Lễ Giáng Sinh.

Ý nghĩa thực sự của Lễ Giáng Sính có thể tóm gọi vào một chữ, “Emmanuel,” hay là “Thiên Chúa ở với chúng ta.” Lễ Giáng Sinh không hoàn toàn được hiểu hay ở sâu trong tâm khảm nếu nó chỉ được mừng chỉ trong một ngày. Thiên Chúa đến với chúng ta và từ đó đã từng ở với chúng ta. Ngài khóc với hàng ngàn bà mẹ của những trẻ em đã bị thảm sát bởi Vua Hêrôđê. Ngài đã du hành với Ba Nhà Đạo Sĩ đi tìm ơn cứu độ. Ngài sống đạm bạc trong Gia Đình Thánh Gia kiểu mẫu, và dậy chúng ta trở thành cha mẹ và con cái như thế nào, sống cuộc đời thinh lặng, và mở lòng đón nhận ơn Chúa ra sao. Ngài chịu đựng và an ủi Thánh Stêphanô,vị tử đạo đầu tiên, và vô số những người khác đã hi sinh cuộc đời của họ và chết

cho đức tin. Ngài làm việc không biết mỏi mệt bên cạnh Thánh Elizabeth Ann Seton, những vị thánh khác, và vô số người nam nữ vô danh nữa, để dạy chúng ta chia sẻ ơn thánh và đức tin cao cả, và phục vụ tha nhân. Anh chị em thấy đó, cho dù chúng ta là ai và ở bất cứ hoàn cảnh nào, Thiên Chúa luôn hiện diện với chúng ta. Ngài chia sẻ nước mắt và nụ cười với chúng ta. Lễ Giáng Sinh năm nay, có lẽ trước khi chúng ta trả lại những món quà chúng ta không thích, vất đi những cây Gíang Sinh, đóng lại những trang hoàng Giáng sinh, và mua thêm thức ăn thức uống cho Đêm Giao Thừa, hãy đào sâu ý nghĩa thánh thiện của mình trong “Emmanuel,” qua ơn thánh và Bí Tích Hoà Giải trong Mười Hai ngày đầu của Mùa Giáng Sinh mà Giáo Hội đã hoạch định cho chúng ta.

Cám ơn các em diễn nguyện, và các ca đoàn đã giúp cho giáo dân cảm nghiệm Lễ Giáng Sinh thật long trọng và thánh thiện trong các Lễ Giáng Sinh.

Cám ơn ban thiện chí đã thiết lập hang đá và trang trí trong ngoài nhà thờ, hội trường, với những hình ảnh về Lễ Giáng sinh thật tuyệt vời.

Cám ơn các mạnh thường quân đã bảo trợ Lịch Việt Nam năm nay, đặc biệt các ơn Anh Chị Charles Nguyễn Mạnh Chí đã bảo trợ bức nền vẽ to lớn sau hang đá ngoài trời. Xin Chúa chúc lành cho sự phục vụ cộng đồng qua vai trò dân cử của anh chị.
