Smarter  Balanced  Assessments

WHAT:  What  are  these  new  assessments?The  Smarter  Balanced  Assessments  are  new  assessments  that  will  be  given  to  test  the  knowledge  of  the  Common  Core  State  Standards.  The  “pracCce  field  test”  is  a  trial  run  that  will  help  us  make  sure  we  are  prepared  for  the  full  launch.  

WHO:  Which  LAUSD  students  will  be  taking  the  pracCce  field  test?Grades  3-­‐8,  Grade  11  and  some  9th  and  10th  Grade  Students.

WHEN:  When  will  LAUSD  parCcipate  in  the  pracCce  field  test  of  the  assessments?The  pracCce  field  test  will  take  place  during  a  six-­‐week  window  from  April  1  -­‐  May  16.  Your  school  will  schedule  your  prac3ce  field  test  some  3me  during  this  window.  *Note:  Bell  Senior  High  School  will  take  the  field  test  some9me  during  March  18-­‐June  6,  due  to  their  year-­‐round  calendar.

WHY:  Why  do  LAUSD  students  need  to  parCcipate  in  this  pracCce  field  test?This  prac3ce  run  helps  us  make  sure  everything  runs  smoothly  before  the  full  launch  2014-­‐15.  It  also  provides  informa3on  to  the  test  creators  to  make  sure  the  test  is  accurate  and  fair.  

HOW:  How  will  students  take  the  pracCce  field  test?Students  will  take  the  prac3ce  field  test,  and  the  full  assessments  in  2014-­‐15,  on  electronic  devices,  such  as  a  tablet  or  computer.  No  more  filling  in  bubbles  with  pencils!

Students: Get Ready for Next-Generation Assessments!

LAUSD  is  par9cipa9ng  in  a  “prac9ce  field  test”  of  the  Smarter  Balanced  Assessments  this  spring.  This  prac9ce  run  will  help  us  

prepare  for  the  full  launch  in  2014-­‐15.

Student Test-Taking Tips

Before  the  test:

✓Mark  the  tes7ng  day(s)  on  your  calendar.

✓Get  enough  sleep  the  night  before  the  test.  Your  brain  and  body  need  rest  to  perform  

at  their  best!  

✓Eat  a  healthy  breakfast  the  morning  of  the  test  to  ensure  your  brain  is  working  at  its  

best.

✓Wake  up  early  and  get  to  school  on  7me  the  morning  of  the  test.

✓When  gekng  ready,  wear  comfortable  clothing  appropriate  for  the  day’s  weather.

During  the  test:

✓Relax  and  do  your  best.  

✓Have  a  posi7ve  aktude  –  this  goes  a  long  way  toward  being  successful.

✓Read  and  pay  careful  a`en7on  to  all  direc7ons.  

✓Read  each  passage  and  accompanying  ques7ons  thoroughly.  

✓Keep  your  eyes  focused  on  your  own  device.

✓Don't  change  an  answer  unless  absolutely  necessary.  Your  first  choice  is  usually  correct.

✓Don't  get  upset  or  frustrated  if  stuck  on  a  ques7on.  Reread  the  ques7on  again,  and  

then  solve  it  as  best  you  can.  Take  your  best  guess  if  need  be.

✓Use  the  process  of  elimina7on  to  help  you  choose  the  correct  answer  in  mul7ple-­‐

choice  ques7ons.  

✓Don't  worry  if  others  finish  before  you.  Instead,  focus  on  the  test  in  front  of  you.  

✓Go  back  and  review  your  answers  before  comple7ng  the  test.  Make  sure  that  you  didn't  

make  any  careless  mistakes.

Testing Tips for Teachers

Before  Test  AdministraCon:  

✓  Remind  students  of  the  test  dates.  

✓  Explain  to  students  the  purposes  for  tes3ng.  

✓  Encourage  all  students  to  ahend  and  be  on  3me  on  test  days.  

✓  Ensure  the  tes3ng  room  has  been  prepared  for  tes3ng  by  removing  or  

covering  up  all  instruc3onal  materials.  

✓  Show  students  the  online  universal  tools  module  to  acquaint  them  with  the  

tools  (e.g.,  types  of  calculators,  expandable  text)  available  in  the  Smarter  

Balanced  Assessments.

✓  Have  students  access  the  Prac3ce  test  and/or  Training  test  for  the  Smarter  

Balanced  Field  Test  so  that  they  have  an  opportunity  to  experience  a  test  in  

a  manner  similar  to  what  they  will  see  on  the  prac3ce  field  test.

✓  Ensure  test  accommoda3ons  for  students  who  require  them  per  their  IEP  or  

Sec3on  504  Plan  have  been  entered  into  the  TIDE  system.  

✓  Read  the  direc3ons  for  test  administra3on  carefully  for  instruc3ons  and  

informa3on.  

✓  Arrange  for  a  quiet  ac3vity  for  students  who  finish  tes3ng  early.  This  ac3vity  should  not  be  the  same  subject  as  what  is  being  tested.

✓  Collect  any  scratch  paper  from  students  used  to  take  notes  of  the  

classroom  ac3vity.

During  Test  AdministraCon:  

✓Ensure  that  all  non-­‐approved  electronic  devices  are  put  away.

✓Distribute  to  students  their  SSID  number  and  the  Test  Session  ID.

✓Make  sure  all  students  have  successfully  entered  their  informa3on.

✓Confirm  that  these  are  the  correct  students  to  take  the  test  and  approve  the  

students’  login  requests.

✓Ensure  that  all  students  are  tested  under  the  same  condi3ons  by  strictly  

adhering  to  the  script  for  administering  the  test.  

✓Monitor  students’  progress  on  marking  answers.  

✓Make  sure  students  are  working  independently.  

✓Circulate  through  the  room  to  ensure  that  all  condi3ons  of  test  security  are  

maintained.

A_er  Test  AdministraCon:  

✓Collect  and  account  for  all  note  cards  with  iden3fiable  student  informa3on.  

✓Document  any  absent  students  and  arranged  for  them  to  make-­‐up  tests.  

✓End  test  session  once  students  have  finished.
