1 Project Overview

1.1 Flashback: 2005-2007 The Silicon Valley chapter of Asha for Education (AshaSV) and the Savidya Upasamiti group of the Himalaya Water Service Tatha Vikas Avam Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samiti (HWSTVAPSSSU) came together in 2005 to start the Savdiya Upasamiti project in the Champawat region of Uttaranchal. In 2005-06, the project “adopted” a rural primary school in Kulethi village, and augmented the school’s resources by building a new classroom, a library and a playground, and adding three new teachers to the staff, distributing school uniforms and study kits to all children and organizing bi-annual health camps. The Kulethi school also became the first primary school in the hilly regions to introduce computer education. The efforts resulted in: (a) an increase in student enrollment (from 52 to 98), (b) appointment of a teacher in every class, (c) reduction in drop-out rates and increase in student attendance. In 2006-07, the project was expanded to include 2 more schools – a middle school in Dungra Sethi, and a primary school in Haldwani, thus benefiting 338 children. As in the first year, additional teachers were added to all the schools. Health camps and eye camps were organized, and school uniforms and study kits were distributed to the students. Computers were installed in the Dungra Sethi school. The students in Kulethi organised a rally to increase awareness about polio vaccination programs in the region, and received wide publicity in the local media. In addition, Savidya appointed a full-time steward to coordinate the project activities in Kulethi and Dungra Sethi.

1.2 Project Proposal: 2007-08 In 2007-08, it was proposed to: • expand the current Support-A-School program to support 6 schools, • establish a Learning Resource Center to enable learning in a group setting and in an interactive manner,

• organize teacher training workshops, • organize meet and lectures to increase awareness among the parents and the community regarding education and other rights, and

2.3 Continuous Teacher Education Savidya organized a teachers’ training workshop in Kulethi between 21st May and 5th June 2008. 14 teachers appointed by Savidya and 11 other teachers, whom Savidya is considering appointing to the schools in full-time or replacement capacity, attended the workshop. The workshop was directed by Mr. BD Fulara, a former Principal of the Govt. Intermediate College, and Mr. GB Rashraya, a former Principal of a local primary school. A number of retired teachers from Champawat helped in organizing and running the training program. Savidya is currently evaluating the performance of the teachers who attended the workshop. In addition to the formal workshop, Savidya often organized talks by visiting educators. Teachers and administrators from the Savidya-supported schools and other schools in the area were invited to these talks. The visitors included: • Prof. PB Bisht, Dept. of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, gave a talk on “How to teach” during his visit to the Science Center.

Mehrana, Minister for State for Women Empowerment and Child Welfare, Govt. of Uttaranchal, was the Chief Guest. Mr. AK Seth, Joint Director in the Dept. of Micro, Mini and Small Industries, Govt. of India, was the Special Guest. The main theme of the event was “Education and the Improvement of Social Condition in Villages”. The event was also an opportunity for Savidya to highlight its activities to a larger audience that included members and leaders of the local community, government officials, school teachers and administrators and students. Savidya members discussed the impact of the AshaSV-supported projects in the various schools, focused on the all-round development of children at school and at home, and stressed the need for greater collaboration between the local community, the government and Savidya to improve the quality of school education in the region. Savidya also released a magazine which described their initiatives in the AshaSV-supported projects and beyond. A seminar on “Elementary Education and Social Development in the Villages” was also organized. Section-6.1 details the events organized at the National Science Day celebrations, and section-6.2 gives the list of schools that participated in the celebrations. The National Science Day celebrations were Savidya’s first major attempt to reach out to the larger community. Hitherto, Savidya’s interactions were limited to the schools and their administrators, parents and guardians of the students, and relevant district and state government educational officials. With two years of results behind it, Savidya was in a better position to reach out to the community and involve them more effectively in its efforts. Here are some pictures from the National Science Day celebrations.
