I. How Can One Believe?

• Some say that faith is a gift of God which is put in the sinner’s heart by a miracle (Irresistible grace)• What does the Bible Say?

Rom. 10:17

• So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Rom. 10:13-14

• For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

• It is necessary for the gospel of Christ to be preached so that sinners can believe and be saved• Where the gospel has not gone,

people have not heard, and no one is saved

II. What does it mean to believe?

• Many teach that one is saved by faith alone without any further acts of obedience

• “Justification includes pardon of sin, and the gift of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done,

• But solely through faith in Christ…” …..” baptism is not essential to salvation..”

Mk. 2:1-5

• And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them…

III. The Conversion of the Jailer

• Those who teach sinners are saved by faith only often use this account of conversion to prove their teaching
