PLETCHER, CASSE RETURN TO TAMPA Trainers Todd Pletcher and Mark Casse, winners ofthe 2013 and 2012 GII Tampa Bay Derbies, respectively, are each back with two chances in today=srenewal. Pletcher became the first conditioner to takethis race more than once when the flashy Verrazano(More Than Ready) joined 2004 victor Limehouse(Grand Slam) a season ago. He saddles WinStar Farmand Twin Creeks Racing=s Vinceremos (Pioneerof theNile) and Stonestreeet Stables and George Bolton=sSurfing U S A (Roman Ruler). Harpoonreturned a week ago to be fifth in Aqueduct=s GIII Gotham S. AVinceremos is doing well andeverything has gone according to plan since the Davis,@Pletcher said. AWhether he has improved enough towin, we=ll find out Saturday.@ Surfing U S A,meanwhile, donned camp and gown two back in OzonePark Nov. 30. He was most recently second to J “TDN Rising Star” J and subsequent GII Fountain of Youth S. third Top Billing (Curlin) in aGulfstream optional claimer Jan. 25. Conquest Titan, a $475,000 OBSMARbuy a year ago, earned his diploma by 5 1/4 lengths inWoodbine=s Swynford S. last August. After off-the-board runs in Keeneland=s GI Dixiana Breeders= Futurityin October and the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile inNovember, the dark bay showed a new dimension torally from out of the clouds and reel in eventualFountain of Youth runner-up General a Rod (RomanRuler) in a Nov. 30 Churchill optional claimer. Cup Hopefuls Square Off in Round Three cont. from p1 African Story, Sheikh Mohammed=s gutsy G2 Godolphin Mile winner of 2012, made just twostarts last year, winning the G3 Burj Nahaar off 10months rest before finishing fifth, beaten seven lengths, when stepping up and stretching out in the Dubai WorldCup. The 7-year-old gelding was making his first startof 2014 in Round 2 and was doing his best work late, simply running out of ground to catch Prince Bishop.ABoth are in good form and have come out of that racewell,@ said Saeed bin Suroor. APrince Bishop lookedbetter than ever winning that and I was really pleasedwith him. He has been working well since and KierenFallon gets on really well with him. African Storyneeded that run a month ago and has improved a lotfitness-wise since. We think 2000 meters is his tripnow and he loves the all-weather surface. Hopefullyboth will run well but it is a good race.@ African Story=sfellow Godolphin colorbearer Cat O=Mountain (StreetCry {Ire}) also warrants a look. The 4-year-old geldingwon a pair of Kempton handicaps on the all-weather inSeptember before scoring first-up here Jan. 16 going2200 meters, but suffered a wide trip, covering moreground than all but one in the 16-horse field, when10th, beaten five lengths, in a Feb. 20 handicap. Mikede Kock brings a formidable duo in Sanshaawes (SAf)(Ashaawes) and Alexandra Palace (SAf) (Jet Master{SAf}), a pair of progressive 4-year-old geldings.Sanshaawes, third in the G1 Cape Derby when lastseen in South Africa last February and finished fourth inhis local debut going 1800 meters Jan. 23. Since then,he has reeled off two straight 2000 meter handicapvictories: on the all-weather Feb. 13, and most recentlyover the turf last weekend. His handicap has risen from100 to 109 over his last three starts, and he looks tosecure a spot in one of the main events on World Cupnight. Alexandra Palace was a first-up winner off theplane from South Africa Jan. 23, but failed to fire wheneighth in a 95+ handicap Feb. 20. He put in animproved performance a week later when third going2200 meters on the all-weather, but will need toimprove to factor here. De Kock said of his pair: ATheyare both in good form but taking a big step up in grade.Hopefully they can at least be competitive in what isobviously a good race.@ Cont. p12

INTRIGUING LINEUP SET FOR JEBEL HATTA Today=s G1 Jebel Hatta, the traditional prep for the$5 million G1 Dubai Duty Free in three weeks time, boasts an intriguing lineup of runners rounding into topform at the Carnival, as well as a few interesting newshooters. South Africa=s Champion 3-Year-OldVercingetorix (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) extended hisunbeaten record to five with a first-up handicap win

over this track andtrip Feb. 13. TheMike de Kock chargescooped the G2 KRAGuineas over nowtriple Group 1 winnerCapetown Noir (SAf)(Western Winter) lastMay, and signed offin his native countrywith a victory in theG1 Daily News 2000.He faces histoughest test to datetoday, but there isnothing to suggesthe isn=t up to the

task. De Kock saddles four altogether, including recentBallydoyle recruit Mars (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who stackedup strong Group 1 form in Britain last summer, finishingsixth in both the G1 2000 Guineas and G1 InvestecDerby, third in the G1 St. James=s Palace and fourth inthe G1 Coral-Eclipse. Mars was seventh in his localdebut in the G3 Firebreak S. Feb. 13, and adds firsttime blinkers here.

De Kock, who has won this race three timespreviously, also saddles Mushreq (Aus) (Flying Spur{Aus}) and Anaerobio (Arg) (Catcher in the Rye {Ire}).AIt is great to have four horses good enough to contestthis caliber of race,@ said de Kock. AWe think all four arecapable of running well with Mushreq and Vercingetorixalready course and distance winners. We wereparticularly pleased with Vercingetorix=s win as he didnot travel well from South Africa through quarantine. The trip may stretch Anaerobio but he has been in goodform and Mars has been improving in his work. Wetried him on the all-weather but he should appreciatethis return to turf. It is a good race, as you wouldexpect, but hopefully all four can be competitive.@Trade Storm (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}) seeks his first winsince taking the G2 Zabeel Mile a year ago. He took longer than hoped to cometo hand in the UK over the summer, but made up forlost time with a second in the G2 Hungerford S. and avictory in the G2 Joel S. He hasn=t been seen sincebeing eased over soft going in the G1 Queen Elizabeth IIS. Oct. 19. While his record first up is promising, he islikely to keep something in the tank for loftierengagements later in the year. Another to put together a perfect campaign last yearwas Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown), who took thisevent en route to Golden Shaheen glory. The 8-year-oldwas a flat seventh in the Listed Dubawi S. on seasonaldebut Jan. 16, but connections noted he was beingprimed for a Golden Shaheen defense. Krypton Factor (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) has yet to findthe winner=s circle since his 2012 Golden Shaheenvictory, and although he finished third behindReynaldothewizard last year, he has appeared far fromhis best form this term. Russian Soul (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) led home theAl Shindagha septet that reoppose here, of whomseveral have strong credentials. Dubawi S. winnerUnited Color (Ghostzapper) found himself completelyshut out on the rail, and shortly thereafter Jamesie (Ire)(Kodiac {GB}) made a brave run up the fence to grabsecond, while Complicate (Aus) (Commands {Aus}),making his second start off the trip from Australia, raced prominently, dropped back to nearly last then re-rallied wide to get up for third. VARIETY CLUB TOWERS OVER BURJ RIVALS South Africa=s dual Horse of the Year Variety Club(SAf) (Var) had tallied eight straight wins, including theG1 Queen=s Plate and G1 Gold Challenge, beforeleaving his native country to embark on a Dubaicampaign last June. He proved none worse for wearwith a sparkling first-up victory in the G3 Firebreak S.over this track and trip. Today, the 5-year-old looks totake his record to 10 straight in the G3 Burj Nahaar. While this race is a traditional prep for the G2Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup night, it is as yetunclear what race trainer Joey Ramsden and ownersIngrid and Markus Jooste intend to target Mar. 29. TheGodolphin Mile, G1 Dubai Duty Free and even the G1 Dubai World Cup are all possibilities and theoutcome is likely to hinge on tonight=s performance. What is clear is that Variety Club displayed the makingsof a world-class racehorse with his Firebreak victory, making all the running and drawing clear to best lastyear=s Godolphin Mile runner-up Haatheq (Seeking theGold) in course record time (although unofficial due tohand timing). The 7-year-old Haatheq has yet to scoreat the Carnival this season, but he rarely puts in a badeffort. His Firebreak second was his first time on theTapeta since November after making a pair of starts onthe dirt at Jebel Ali, and he was much the best of therest behind Variety Club. Back in third that day wasCapital Attraction (Speightstown), who came back towin a course and distance handicap a week ago. TheBurj Nahaar also features the top three from the trackand trip G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 Jan. 9,headed by Godolphin=s Shuruq (Elusive Quality), lastyear=s G3 UAE Oaks winner who is shaping as an all-weather specialist. The 4-year-old failed to fire on thelawn in the Jan. 30 Cape Verdi most recently, finishinglast of six in the G2 Cape Verdi, and she reverts to herpreferred surface. Empire Storm (Ger) (Storming Home{GB}) was also third in the Firebreak, and althoughBrendan Brackan (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) disappointedon the turf most recently in the Jan. 30 G2 AlRashidiya, first-up run in the Maktoum Challenge wasencouraging.

OBSMAR SALE CHANGED TO SINGLE SESSIONBy Steve Sherack The OBS March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds inTraining has been rescheduled and the entire auctionwill now be held in one session Tuesday, March 11,beginning at 10:00 a.m., it was announced followingthe conclusion of Friday=s breeze show. The sale wasoriginally slated to be held during two sessions onMonday and Tuesday. Following the postponement ofThursday=s under-tack show due to heavy rain, prospective buyers will now have two full days to dotheir inspections following the second breeze showSaturday. There have already been 78 juvenileswithdrawn from the 411-head catalogue. AWe=ve been battling the weather and we thought itwas the right thing to do Thursday [postponing thebreeze show] to give the horses an opportunity to showthemselves,@ OBS President Tom Ventura commented.AThat created an issue with getting the horses lookedat, and with the 2-year-old in training sales, you havethe added equation of having to watch the breezeshow, the videos, etc. We thought it was tooconsolidated and we had the flexibility with the numberof horses that are at this time scheduled to go throughthe ring--that number is about 330--that we could dothat all in one day and kind of accommodate bothsides.@ Ventura concluded, ABy making it a longer dayTuesday, everybody will have a fair chance to getaround and look at all the horses. It=s something thatyou don=t plan for, but we needed to be flexible andmake sure that the buyers have a shot to look at thehorses and also give the sellers an opportunity to selltheir horses.@ Click here to share. Chilly Temps Rule the Day... Conducted on a windy day under overcast skies withtemperatures struggling to get out of the high 40s, ason of freshman sire Midshipman led the way duringFriday=s rescheduled and well-attended breeze show.Consigned as Hip 139, the bay worked a bullet eighthin :9 4/5. AWe=ve really had atough couple of days with the weather,@ OBS PresidentTom Ventura admitted. AToday was a little tough in thatthe cold wasn=t as much as the wind, and the wind, ofcourse, was going in the wrong direction. I thought thetrack played fair across the board from beginning toend, but I think because of the wind, it may=ve been atick slower than normal. But the buyers are smartenough to take all of that into account.@ Venturacontinued, AYou hope for an ideal day, but short ofdoming the racetrack, you have to deal with what youhave.@ The under-tack show resumes today at 8:00a.m. with Hips 207B411 scheduled to breeze.

What They=re Saying... AThe cold we can deal with. The headwind, we=d allprefer we didn=t have. Obviously, there=s nothing wecan do about it and it=s the same for everybody. It didseem, from where I was standing, to be fairly evenmost of the day--the track and wind. Some horses dostruggle through that a little bit. The headwind doesn=tflatter these young horses. I think it was a fairly fairday, though. I think a lot of us were expecting orhoping that some of our horses would work a littlequicker. But I think when you go through that breeze,it=s just a question of making the correspondingadjustments, and it=s all going to level out.@ -consignorNick de Meric.

DATA POWER Almost a year ago, the National BasketballAssociation (NBA) unveiled a new website,stats.nba.com, where they did something novel toimprove their sport. They released a vast statisticaltrove, powered by a flexible and useful databaseallowing fans, researchers, fantasy gamers and eventeam executives to investigate and study all forms ofbasketball dataBcurrent and historical. Extraordinarily, it is free. In this era of restrictive intellectual property rights, why would a corporate monopoly like the NBA releaseall of its statistical data at no cost? Cleverly, theyunderstand that forfeiting modest present-day revenuesto deeply engage their core fans creates interest andinteraction that propels the popularity of professionalbasketball. In other words, they hope it will lead toincreased TV ratings, ticket sales, and apparelpurchasesBthe money-making endeavors of its teams. I have a modest proposal for horse racing: TheJockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations(TRA), through their subsidiary Equibase, should followthe example of the NBA and make available acomprehensive database with all breeding and racinginformation from the beginnings of our sport. The TJCand TRA should lead our industry into its digital futureby building a highly functional, but accessible websitethat would allow fans, handicappers, academics andindustry professionals the ability to access its databaseat the most basic level. For the good of the sport, this information should befreely available. What drives the popularity of the NFL, MLB and theNBA? Gambling and its close cousin, fantasy sports.Well, horse racing was the first fantasy sport. We havea 150 year history of data collection and a longstanding respect for its analysis--think Lowe, Tesio,Ziemba, Beyer. Sadly, we have been left behind in therace for gaming dollars and consumer interest. While this failure has many culprits (high takeout, inconsistent product quality, crumbling facilities, government regulation, etc.) the restrictive presentationand prohibitive cost of our information surely stifles fanparticipation and engagement, not to mention breedingand handicapping innovation. Meanwhile, other sports are experiencing a revolutionin data analysis--books and blogs proliferate, academicsuse sports data to publish in pursuit of PhDs. All thisactivity drives fandom to an obsessive interest in theirsports. Most famously, MIT=s Sloan School of Businessholds an annual conference with thousands ofattendees.

I=ve attended the last three conferences and have yetto meet anyone from horse racing there--not ahandicapper, not a breeder, not a track executive. The Jockey Club is an organization dedicated to thebetterment of the breed and of horse racing. The TRAis charged with promoting the interests of its membertracks. So why should they release this information for free?Quite simply, because it=s good for the business ofhorse racing. In recent years, The Jockey Club hasmade selective investments in the Abusiness@ of horseracing. There is no better investment they could makethan releasing its information for free. Nothing eitherorganization could do with the revenues they seek fromhandicappers and breeders could rival the benefit thegame would receive if the entirety of racing andbreeding information was free to all. Equibase has done a fine job of recording andtabulating the data. However, the analysis of that datalags far behind the sports analytics field. This is notsurprising, Equibase is a monopoly and while thatstructure creates efficiencies in gathering, storing andcontrolling information, monopolies are typically poor atanalytics. A very different skill set is needed to minedata for trends or revelations--this is where the skills ofhobbyists, industry professional and academics can bepowerful. Equibase is sure to respond that they make a widearray of data available and much of it for free.Furthermore, there are a number of third-party providers(DRF, BRIS etc.) that present the data in a variety offormats. This is all true, however, that data is just notavailable in a format suitable for serious research. Thedated formats and restricted access pose significantbarriers, both monetary and practical, for doing theresearch necessary to spur the sort of engagement thatwe have seen drive massive interest in fantasy sportsand gambling on the NBA, MLB and NFL. Horseracing is sitting on mountains of digital breedingand racing information. However, in this age of bigdata, cheap processing and powerful databases, we aredoing a poor job of mining the billions (yes, billions) ofdollars buried inside those mountains. Let=s tear down the walls, and unleash the power ofour data. Click here to share.

In Friday=s TDN, we ran an Op/Ed from Blue HeavenFarm=s Adam Corndorf regarding the minimum wage.We received the following responses. When I graduated from high school in 1950, I waselated to obtain a job for the prevailing 60 cents perhour minimum wage. Getting a job, any job, wasn't aneasy thing to do. There were not that many jobsavailable, and it took me several months to get hired. Itwasn't too long before this that my father wassupporting a family of four on 45 cents per hour--just$18 a week. Then World War II came along and thedemand for employees increased and the availablesupply decreased and as a result wages increased. Once I obtained that first job, it was up to me, noone else, to improve my value by hard work andlearning new skills thereby increasing my demand asopposed to the supply available. I was the envy ofsome of my former class mates, because they were notable to find a job and were, for the most part, working"off the books" if they wanted any income at all. For over the 60-plus years I have been working, Inever witnessed where an increase in minimum wagedid anything positive for the wage earner or theeconomy. However, I did witness the damage done:fewer entry-level jobs, higher costs for goods andservices, higher taxes which all contributed to inflationand debasement of the currency. Due to the highercosts associated to the wage increase, it was a veryshort period of time before the economy was back tosquare one and talk of another increase in the minimumwage. There is a word for doing the same thing severaltimes with the same negative results. Back in 1950,there were many jobs available, but the supply ofskilled labor to fill those jobs just wasn't there. Wehave the same situation today. There are many goodjobs with decent salaries, but a small supply of peopleto fill these jobs. The problem, in my lifetime, has been that once anindividual finds an opportunity at minimum wage, mostdo very little to increase their value by skill and education. It is their personal responsibility to try and betterthemselves. It isn't easy. Hard work never is. If you wantthe rewards, then you have to work to attain them.BFrank E. Macauley

Mr. Corndorf's appeals to emotion with his support ofa higher minimum wage argue that the few prosper atthe expense of the many. In my opinion, the federalgovernment should not be setting minimum wagerequirements. The free market should determine whatan appropriate wage is. If Mr. Corndorf wants to payhis employees $10, $15, $20 per hour, he is free to doso.

But to have the government dictate what anappropriate wage is for every employer does not helpemployees and sets an artificial minimum benchmarkwhich some employers will use to justify low wages. The government has increased the minimum wageperiodically using the same arguments that are beingused today; workers cannot live and support families onthe current minimum wage. The minimum wage is not acareer wage, it is an entry level wage. If employeeswith certain skills seek higher wages, they are free toseek that wage. Employers who want to retain goodemployees must pay them competitive wages. Employers in any business who are responsible forbusiness managers know that labor costs are thebiggest part of their budget. If those costs areartificially increased by the government, simpleeconomics will cause that employer to change how thebusiness will be run. It could be that he would have toincrease prices and/or cut back on employee hours orpositions. How does this benefit the employees? Let the free market decide what is an appropriatewage scale in the Thoroughbred industry or any U.S.industry, not politicians seeking votes.--Alfred T Riccio, Clifton Park, NY

When I opened the KTA e-mail, I had the samereaction as described by Adam Corndorf in his Op/Edyesterday. I thought it was nervy of the KTA to assume that themajority of farm owners in the bluegrass were of themindset to keep salaries as low as possible. I e-mailedthe KTA to tell them what a sad commentary this wasand how embarrassing it is at times being part of theThoroughbred industry. But upon further thought, Iguess I should not have been too surprised. I lived in Lexington for nearly a year in 1969-1970when I worked for The Blood-Horse. I will never forgeta time when a visiting professor at the University ofKentucky presented a plan at the monthly FarmManager's Club. The professor had developed a plan togenerate new farm workers to address the exodus ofblacks to cities like Chicago and New York. This wasbefore Latino workers became available to take theirplace. The professor came up with a plan that wouldprovide employees for only a third of the usual salary,as he found a way to obtain government subsidies tofund two-thirds of the salary. The catch was that theemployees were limited in their work week to 40 hours. Even though the proposal would provide labor at athird of the cost, the farm managers rejected the planout of hand because it limited the hours to a normalwork week. When the professor explained to thoseassembled that they could hire people for the 40 hoursat a subsidized wage and spend a little bit extra tosupplement the staff with additional employees, thefarm managers were too stuck in their ways to showthe flexibility required to adapt their programs to adifferent model. That was shocking to me at the time. But maybe times are not so different after all.--Barry Irwin

STEVE SHERACK: GIII Gotham S. - Couldn’t have been more wrongabout the Gotham, but, man, that sure was fun to watch Samraat, UncleSigh and In Trouble all throw down like that in the stretch at the Big A.Really looking forward to the rematch in the Wood... Financial Mogul, meanwhile, sat a perfect ground-saving trip, but came up empty when itmattered most to finish fourth at 6-1.

GII Tampa Bay Derby - The battle-tested throwback East Hall fell toofar back for his own good--courtesy of being drawn in post 12--andmade up plenty of ground over a well-documented speed-favoringsurface when a respectable fourth at 72-1 in the GII Fountain of YouthS. at Gulfstream Feb. 22. The chestnut sat much closer to the earlytempo when third at 22-1 behind General a Rod and Wildcat Red in theGulfstream Park Derby Jan. 1, and he should land a perfect trip just offthe leaders with a much more favorable draw this time around. The $55kOBSAPR graduate has paired up career-high Beyers in his last two dirtattempts--sandwiched by a close third in the OBS Championship S. overthe all-weather Jan. 21--and continues to thrive on racing experience, posting a record of 11-2-1-4. Very live longshot to hit the board in a racethat often produces some wild results. Selection: #7 East Hall (10-1).

GII San Felipe S. - With the late defection of “TDN Rising Star” Bayern, this one is really wide open now. Wasn’t too crazy about any of theremaining main contenders in here, and landed on longshot Recanted, who makes his dirt debut. A 6 1/2-furlong debut winner at Newbury lastJune, the bay proved that he can stay a distance of ground when thirdgoing 1 1/4 miles at Leicester in his European finale in October. The bayturned in an even fifth while adding Lasix going down the hill in his firststart for Doug O’Neill Jan. 16, and shows a promising string of steadyfive-furlong dirt workouts, including a Mar. 3 move in 1:01 2/5 .Produced by an unraced Pulpit mare, the son of Empire Maker doessport a pretty grassy pedigree--third dam is Plenty of Grace--but hedoes have the very nice dirt sprinter Diabolical under his second dam.Stranger things have certainly happened; can’t blame Reddam andTeam O’Neill for a taking a big swing...Was tempted to go with Brian’spick Schoolofhardrocks--a visually impressive debut winner at Del Marthat covered the mile distance in the same time as subsequent GIBreeders’ Cup Juvenile hero New Year’s Day did two races later on thecard--but think that this may be asking a bit too much for his first attempt

since while attempting a new surface. Selection: #10 Recanted (20-1).

BRIAN DIDONATO: GIII Gotham S. - Despite the support of both Steveand myself--and seemingly every other “wise guy” out there--FinancialMogul was a non-threatening fourth with a pretty easy trip. I have afeeling he’ll prove best as a seven-furlong closer type.

GII Tampa Bay Derby - This race has produced some tricky results inthe past, in part I think because Tampa is a track that not all horses taketo. Despite a solid purse and Kentucky Derby qualifying potential luringin a decent number of shippers, previous Tampa form is usually anadvantage. More than half (8) of the 15 horses that made up the last fiveTampa Bay Derby trifectas made their last start over the surface, so I’llfocus in on those coming out of the GIII Sam F. Davis S. Feb. 1. Ilanded on Matador, who finished a close fourth in that race behindVinceremos, last week’s Gotham fifth Harpoon and Cousin Steven. While winner Vinceremos scraped paint throughout as he pressedCousin Stephen, Matador was hung wide into the first turn and againwhen coming out for the stretch drive. According to Trakus data, hetraveled 35 feet more than the winner (approx. 4.1 lengths compared tothe one length Matador lost by) and five feet more than Cousin Stephen, who edged him out for third by a head. The chart also makes nomention of Matador getting hit pretty hard by a rival jockey’s whip at thetop of the lane, which definitely slowed his momentum a bit. Matadorlooks to have a good chance to follow in the footsteps of fellow Casseand Oxley runner and son of Malibu Moon Prospective--winner here twoyears ago--while offering some value on the tote. Selection: #3Matador (8-1).

GII San Felipe S. - I tried pretty hard to talk myself off ofSchoolofhardrocks here, but in the end just couldn’t resist. I loved hispowerful debut win going a mile over the summer at Del Mar, andthough I’ve always had reservations about his prospects onconventional dirt, he figures to be enough of a price that I don’t want tomiss out on getting paid for my general bullishness on him.Schoolofhardrocks’ talented sire Rock Hard Ten only raced on dirt, buthis progeny for the most part have seemed to prefer the lawn.Schoolofhardrocks’ female family is also grass-heavy: his RoyalAcademy dam’s lone start was a victory on the Del Mar infield for BobbyFrankel in 2004, and his most accomplished sibling Coffee Clique(Medaglia d’Oro) has done all of her best work on turf or synth. There’salso the fact that he hasn’t started since his debut and was scratchedfrom the track-and-trip GI FrontRunner S. in September, but his works inthe interim look very sharp and it’s hard to imagine he’d show up here ifhe wasn’t doing well. Trinniberg Participating in >Breed Secure' Program: Rockridge Stud's stallion Trinniberg (Teuflesberg--Bella Dorato, by Goldminer=s Gold) will participate in the"Breed Secure" program, the farm announced at theirstallion show last month. The program, as offered bySpendthrift Farm in Kentucky, allows breeders to sign acontract that promises them the first funds of the saleof a foal at auction for a non-refundable fee of $150;the ownership syndicate would collect their feesecondarily. "We just felt that this program would be agreat way for the syndicate to show breeders that webelieve in the stallion," says Rockridge's Lere Visagie. He continues, "At times when you have anexceptionally proven individual with conformationflaws, it's difficult for commercial breeders to take therisk. We're eliminating that risk."

SANDRA SNYDER:

I am writing this letter to plead for funding for the

Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center in Wichita, Kansas.

I know that the racing community includes many

members with big hearts. (Surely, racing people

understand the importance of heart better than most.)

The majority of TDN readers shouldn't need the

benefits of therapeutic riding explained to them. If,

however, some of them want to be persuaded anew,

they should peruse the center's website at

www.fhtrc.org/--and be sure to read Cora's Notebook.

The Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center is not a new

venture, having been established in 1999 as a 501(c)3

non-profit corporation. It differs from some similar

facilities in that its services are offered to adults as well

as to children. The center currently has about 35 clients

whose ages range from three to 72 years.

Each client rides once a week during an eight-week

session. The income-based fees are deliberately low in

order to keep the therapy affordable for clients'

families, many of which are faced with enormous

medical bills. A typical client pays $35 per weekly

lesson, a total of $280 over eight weeks. Although the

staff consists mainly of volunteers, these modest fees

only weakly offset the center's expenses, and there is

always a shortfall.

Note that we are not talking mega bucks here. The

center's Executive Director, Amanda Meinhardt, writes:

"It costs around $96,000 a year to stay open or around

$8,000 per month." But those costs began to look

insurmountably high after the center lost its principal

sponsor when Boeing closed its Wichita plant in 2013

and left town.

The center's next session, scheduled to begin on

Mar. 24, was in grave danger of cancellation until very

recently, when a donor who wishes to be anonymous

stepped up and offered to provide approximately

one-half of the center's monthly operating expenses,

albeit on a temporary basis. The remainder of expenses

still needs to be met, and a replacement sponsor will be

required by early next year when the temporary

commitment expires. Cont. p6

Letter to the Editor cont.

Plainly, the greatest need is for one or more

substantial donors. We should remember, however,

that a Giant Oak grows from a tiny acorn (sorry,

couldn't resist that one). Here are some ways in which

each of us--whether owner, breeder, trainer, or "just a

fan@--could help to accumulate acorns.

1. Recognize that no acorn is too small to grow. If, for

example, five people contribute $5 each, a hoof trim is

covered. A single donation of $40 pays for a full month

of supplements for the center's "best therapy horse,"

22-year-old Diamond. (He's billed as a Quarter Horse,

but no one can convince me that he doesn't have

Thoroughbred blood in his background.) A person who

can afford a few hundred dollars per month could

consider sponsoring either a horse or a client. The

center does have a waiting list, and it would be

wonderful to be able to accommodate everyone who

could benefit from the therapy.

2. Take a look around your tack room for any surplus

equipment which matches the center's wish list (see

website for list).

3. If you have an unproductive Thoroughbred which

has a suitable disposition and measures no more than

16 hands, offer it to a therapeutic riding center--not

necessarily this one, but perhaps one in your own area,

where you could track the horse's progress and see for

yourself how it brings physical and mental improvement

to its new riders.

Anyone who feels a need for more detailed

information can direct an email to

[email protected] or call the barn at (316)

733-8943, leaving a voice message if necessary.

Monetary contributions can be made by credit card

from the center's website or by check. The latter

should be made payable to Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding

Center and mailed to P.O. Box 782622, Wichita, KS

67278. All donations are tax-deductible.

Let's plant some acorns! And let's hope that we will

all still be around when they mature.

Sincerely,

Sandra K. Snider

P.S. I am not affiliated with the center in any way. I

simply want to help, beyond the pittance I can afford to

donate myself.

those who wait, winning his first time ever in a stakes

race in his 26th start at age seven here. After spending

the two years plying his trade in the British handicap

ranks with trainer Johnston, Take Ten made one start

for Mahmood Al Zarooni in 2011. He resurfaced under

the care of prominent Dubai trainer Saeed bin Suroor in

December 2012, and won a Meydan Tapeta handicap in

January. He had gone winless in five outings since, and

led home a trio of outsiders in this dirt test. The race

looked in the final furlong as if it would go to one of the

Sheikh Hamdan duo of Fityaan and Shaishee, but Take

Ten got up in the shadow of the wire under apprentice

Marc Monaghan to record a career best. Seemar noted

that he would be keen to step the gelding up to Group

1 company in the Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup

night Mar. 29, should he be invited.
