Marsz, Marsz, Klukowski** “Marsz, Marsz Dabrowski” (March, March,

Dabrowski) is the first verse of the Polish national anthem’s chorus. Dabrowski was a Polish General with a strong patriotic attitude).

Rather than get into the “nitty gritty” of bridge and the NABC, Ahn Gray, news reporter for Reno Public Radio, the local NPR affiliate, wanted to tell a story “about the devoted bridge fans.”

On Monday morning, some of the game’s most notable personalities and a couple of its rising stars sat down to talk with Gray. They described their love for the game and what motivates them to keep playing.

A focused playerNot long ago, Bob Sanner of Palo Alto CA was

playing in a tournament in Mountain View CA. He and three other players went out to dinner between sessions one night. On their way back to the tournament venue, Sanner’s partner asked, “Do you think Bernie Sanders has a chance to win?” Before Sanner could answer, one of the other players piped up: “Where does he stand in the event right now?”

Decisions, decisionsAll writers look with special affection on the

deals they themselves write up. David Caprera (East in this write-up, playing with Billy Pollack) drew this to my attention. It’s from the Thursday afternoon Open Pairs. To quote a British comedian of 40 years ago, I think you’ll like it – not a lot, but you’ll like it. Dlr: South ♠ Q J 10 7 Vul: Both ♥ 8 2 ♦ Q J 9 4 2 ♣ 8 4 ♠ A 9 3 ♠ 8 2 ♥ K 10 9 7 5 ♥ Q J 4 3 ♦ — ♦ K ♣ 10 9 7 5 2 ♣ A K Q J 6 3 ♠ K 6 5 4 ♥ A 6 ♦ A 10 8 7 6 5 3 ♣ — West North East South 1♦ 1♥ Dbl 4♦ 4♠ Pass Pass 5♥ Pass Pass 5♠ Dbl All Pass

All three of your calls are not without interest. You might bid 4♣ at your first turn if it showed a fit in hearts, but in an unfamiliar partnership 4♦ is less ambiguous. At your second turn, maybe 5♣ is an option but 5♥ perhaps gives less away. At your third turn, you double more to stop partner than for any concrete belief you should actually beat 5♠!

Partner leads the ♥9, promising the 10. Playing standard signals, you have your first decision. You play the jack in an attempt to suggest an even number.

Declarer wins the ♥A, leads the ♠5 to the 10, partner playing the 9 and you drop the 2, suit preference for clubs. Partner wins the ♠A and tracks the ♥10. Duck or overtake? If you overtake, which is technically the right play? Answer: None of the above!

Look again at the full board: Partner is begging you to play a diamond, so why don’t you? Note: It can never cost. Declarer is clearly 4-2 in the majors, whether he has four, five or six diamonds, your clubs won’t go away. But if he has seven . . .

CorrectionIn Thursday’s Daily Bulletin on page 3, the

device used to duplicate boards for the NABC was incorrectly identified. ACBL uses the PlayBridgeDealer4 for that task.

Sneaky, sneakyDon Kern of Bay Minette AL pulled a fast one

in the second qualifying session of the Mixed Pairs that earned him and partner Faye Marino a near top. ♠ A 7 ♥ A Q 8 5 ♦ K 9 3 2 ♣ 9 6 4 ♠ K 10 5 ♠ Q J 9 8 4 3 2 ♥ 3 ♥ 4 ♦ A Q J 8 7 5 ♦ 10 4 ♣ K 8 5 ♣ A Q 7 ♠ 6 ♥ K J 10 9 7 6 2 ♦ 6 ♣ J 10 3 2

Kern played 4♠ from the East. On the lead of the ♦6 (which he suspected was a singleton), he won the ace in dummy and casually played the ♦10 from his hand. He led the ♠10, which held, and then the ♦Q. North ducked and now Kern had one more trick than he was entitled to. Pure gold at matchpoints!

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSImproving your game

By Brent Manley

Playing in a women’s pairs in New York City, one of the players heard a 1NT opener on her right. The woman turned to her left-hand opponents and asked about the 1NT opener’s range. English was the lady’s second language, and she didn’t understand the question. The questioner tried to clarify by stating that she just wanted to know how many points her partner had. She said, “Oh! I’m not sure, but she’s a Life Master!”

I am a runner. I don’t have a lot of talent, but I’m persistent because I enjoy the sport so much. Despite my average achievements in running, I have been running races for more than three decades, and I have no plans to stop. I tell people you don’t have to be in the elite class to enjoy the sport (thank goodness).

The same goes for bridge. You can find enormous enjoyment in the game even if you never achieve world-class or expert status.

That said, most players I know want to get better at the game. When I found out about bridge while serving in the U.S. Army in 1970, I was instantly smitten. I didn’t initially realize how little I knew – it was virtually nothing – but I desperately wanted to get better.

I started by reading. I learned a lot early on from Watson’s “Classic Book on the Play of the Hand.” It was originally published in 1934, but the principles Watson outlined for card play and defense are just as relevant today.

I devoured bridge books and found that reading helped my game more than I expected because it enabled me to recognize certain situations when they arose in actual play. Here’s an example:

You land in 6♥ during an auction that included a 3♠ bid by your left-hand opponent.

West leads the ♠K. Over to you. ♠ J 3 ♥ A 8 6 5 4 ♦ A 3 ♣ K J 10

♠ A 2 ♥ K Q J 10 7 ♦ K 10 ♣ A 7 6 3

You win the ♠A, pull trumps in two rounds, West having a singleton. It looks like you must guess who has the ♣Q, and it seems logical to play East for that card considering you already know eight of West’s cards (seven spades and one heart). Look at little deeper and you will see there is no need to try to find the ♣Q. You have a 100% line of play. Simply cash your two diamonds (eliminating that suit from both hands) and play

a spade. West is marked with the ♠Q, so he will win the trick, at which point he will have to play a club, solving that suit for you. If he plays a diamond or a spade, you will discard a club from dummy while you ruff in your hand. Slam made! The East-West cards:

♠ K Q 10 9 8 5 4 ♠ 7 6 ♥ 9 ♥ 3 2 ♦ 7 6 ♦ Q J 9 8 5 4 2 ♣ Q 5 2 ♣ 9 8 4

Having read about this kind of play before I actually encountered it at the table meant I didn’t screw it up, go down in a maker and then wonder what went wrong.

Tomorrow: More tips for improving your game.

What can go wrong? By Eddie Kantar

West North East South 1♦ Pass 1♥ Pass 2♣ Pass 3NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♠5. East plays the queen.Plan the play at IMPs and at matchpoints. At IMPs, where safety is first, win the spade

and cross to the ♦Q to lead a low heart (key play). If East has the ♥A and jumps up with it to

return a spade, you have at least nine tricks: five diamonds, two hearts and two spades. If the ♥Q wins, lead a club to set up your ninth trick. The most the opponents can take after winning the ♣A is three heart tricks.

If West takes the ♥Q, he may return a spade

hoping partner has the 9. That play won’t work. Now you have five diamonds, three spades, one heart and a soon-to-be-developed club for at least 10 tricks.

The bottom line is that at IMP scoring, you have a 100% play for the contract. But how should you play at matchpoints, where overtricks are so crucial?

If the club suit comes in for four tricks, you have at least 11 tricks, but you may go down

trying for them. For example, if East has both club honors or if you misguess the clubs after the first club wins and East can get in for a spade return, you are history.

If you feel you need a good score, attack clubs. If you have a sound winning game, take the money and run by leading a heart toward your queen at trick three.

Lyn Sacco of Pleasant Hill CA and Don Walcher of Hailey ID met at the Spring NABC and formed a partnership to play in the Intermediate/Newcomer games.

The Top Intermediate/Newcomer masterpoint leaders can be found on page 14.

Hit the slopes, go for the matchpointsBob Sanner of Palo Alto has been having fun at

the Spring NABC, but not just from playing bridge. He has been rising at 6:30 a.m. and, with his non-bridge-playing wife, Barbara, driving 30 miles to the Mount Rose ski area, where he has season passes. They leave the ski area in time for him to play bridge in the afternoon and evening.

After Tuesday’s refreshing trip to Mount Rose, Sanner came back to Reno to play in the Daylight Open Pairs, where he scored a near top with some expert card play (hands rotated). Dlr: South ♠ 10 6 3 Vul: None ♥ A Q ♦ K 9 7 ♣ K J 10 6 2 ♠ 8 ♠ Q J 9 7 5 4 ♥ 10 8 6 4 ♥ K 9 3 ♦ J 6 5 3 ♦ Q 8 4 ♣ A 9 8 3 ♣ 4 ♠ A K 2 ♥ J 7 5 2 ♦ A 10 2 ♣ Q 7 5 West North East South 1♦ Pass 2♣ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

West led the ♥4 and Sanner put in the queen. East won the ♥K and returned the 9 to dummy’s ace. Sanner than played on clubs, West winning the ♣A and returning the ♥8 to Sanner’s jack, Sanner discarding a low spade from dummy.

Sanner then cashed the top spades. When West showed out on the second high spade, Sanner knew that a double squeeze was in the offing. West was guarding hearts, East spades, so both had to guard diamonds.

Sanner ran the clubs to reach this four-card end position: ♠ — ♥ — ♦ K 9 7 ♣ 2 ♠ — ♠ Q ♥ 10 ♥ — ♦ J 6 5 ♦ Q 8 4 ♣ — ♣ — ♠ 2 ♥ 7 ♦ A 10 ♣ —

On the play of the ♣2, East had to discard a diamond or Sanner’s ♠2 would be a winner. Sanner threw the spade and waited for West’s selection. Discarding the ♥10 would make Sanner’s ♥7 good, so West had to pitch a diamond. Sanner then played a diamond to his ace and another to the king as the opponents’ jack and queen fell on the same trick. The ♦7 was trick number 12, good for a 92% score.

people don’t realize, is a lot like golf … the mental attitude, the ability to play well when you’re feeling strong, and cracking up when you’re under pressure … if I spend five minutes with you playing bridge, I’ll know more about you than if I spend six months living with you. Bridge is a very revealing game.”

KlukowskiOpen Swiss teams begin play todayThe Open Swiss Teams begin play today with

the Jacoby Trophy honoring the winners. This is a four-session event with two qualifying sessions and two final sessions.

The trophy is named for Oswald and Jim Jacoby – one of the premier father-son pairs in ACBL history, the first father-son to win a national championship together and the first father-son to be elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame.

The senior Jacoby (1902–1984) won his first major title – the National Team Championship of the American Whist League – in 1929 and his last major title – the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams – in 1983.

In between, he won the McKenney

Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) four times. He was the first player to win 1,000 masterpoints

in a single year and the first player to earn 10,000 masterpoints.

Jacoby won seven Spingolds, seven Vanderbilts, two Reisingers and more than a dozen other major titles. He was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1965.

He and son Jim are the co-authors of Jacoby Transfer Bids, Jacoby 2NT and other bidding ideas. Together, they won the Reisinger in 1955 – when Jim was 22 – and the Vanderbilt in 1965.

Jim Jacoby (1933–1991), elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997, won the Bermuda Bowl in 1970 and 1971, the World Mixed Teams in 1972 and the World Team Olympiad in 1988. He won more than 14 NABC titles and captured the Barry Crane Top 500 in 1988 – the same year he won the Olympiad title.

The history of the event became more complicated in 2015, when it was one by a team including a pair involved in the ongoing cheating scandal. The other members of the team announced they wished to renounce the title. Adjudication on the matter is pending.

losing.” Winning that gold medal, Klukowski became

the youngest world champion in the history of bridge, supplanting Bobby Levin, who won the title at 24 years old.

Could you tell us about the last Bermuda Bowl and how you joined the Polish team after the start of the tournament?

MK: As you know, the WBF withdrew the invitation to play for one of the three Polish pairs. So my partner, Piotr Gawrys, and I got a phone call from the Polish Bridge League. They asked us to immediately leave for Chennai. We just took the plane. I was happy to be able to represent my country.

So, how did you feel about taking your compatriots’ place on the National team?

MK: I was sorry for them, especially because I don’t think they are guilty. I am sure that they don’t blame me for agreeing to take their place.

Did you meet them in Chennai? What did you say each other?

MK: We met for few minutes only. We just looked in each other’s eyes… You know, there are situations in life when you don’t need to speak.

Many players in the Bermuda Bowl didn’t want you and your partner to join the competition because it had already started; some players even tried to exclude you. What do you think about this?

MK: It’s hard for me to evaluate. I would say that I would let a team of four add a pair, given the circumstances, but you know, I am looking at the situation from my point of view. I can’t know what I would have done in their place. At the beginning I did not feel much at ease at the idea, but all the players were very nice and kind with my partner and me and the atmosphere was OK.

Some think that Poland should have withdrawn from the Bermuda Bowl. Does this change the taste of victory for you?

MK: It makes the victory even sweeter. When a pair from your team is accused and left out and you get the title anyway, you are proving that your country is clean and truly strong.

Which is the strongest emotion for you? Winning or losing?

MK (thinks for a while): Yes, true, losing is a bigger emotion. When I lose, I feel burnt inside, and if it is my fault it hurts even more. It takes up to some days to go through the frustration.

After winning world titles do you still have bridge ambitions?

MK: Sure I do. I’ve never been beyond the round of 16 of a NABC. This is my goal now.

Which teams do you fear the most here at the Vanderbilt?

MK: I don’t want to say because then if we play against them they would know. If you ask me which is the favorite team here, I would answer that it is probably Lavazza.

How do you feel about being the youngest world champion and breaking the record?

MK: It is nice setting a record, but to be honest, I don’t really care about age. I care about being a world champion, independent of the age. And it is wonderful.

Did you achieve your dream of being a bridge pro?

MK: I am trying to. I am looking for sponsors and I wish to go on playing and travelling around

Riding the rushJenni Carmichael and Greg Humphreys led the

two-day Rockwell Mixed Pairs from start to finish in spectacular fashion. Humphreys selected these two deals that contributed to their success.

Here’s our first board of the afternoon (first final session) on Wednesday. It’s about the importance of bidding in tempo.

I pick up:♠K Q J 4 2 ♥2 ♦A K Q 9 7 ♣A10

My right-hand opponent opened 3♥ and I bid a pretty heavy 3♠. LHO bid 4♥ and partner bids 4♠. After what felt like about two minutes, my RHO finally decided to compete to 5♥. I take the push to 5♠, and when this passes back around to my RHO, he doubles.

I get a club lead, and see in dummy (hands rotated):

Board 1 ♠ 9 8 5 Dlr: East ♥ A Vul: None ♦ 8 5 4 2 ♣ K J 6 5 2

♠ K Q J 4 2 ♥ 2 ♦ A K Q 9 7 ♣ A 10 West North East South Carmichael Humphreys 3♥ 3♠ 4♥ 4♠ 5♥ 5♠ Pass Pass Double All Pass

Eventually, I decide to win the lead in dummy and run the ♠9. It held the trick! I ended up taking 12 tricks for plus 750, edging out the pairs in 4♠ doubled making five. Here was the layout:

♠ 9 8 5 ♥ A ♦ 8 5 4 2 ♣ K J 6 5 2 ♠ 6 ♠ A 10 7 3 ♥ K J 9 7 ♥ Q 10 8 6 5 4 3 ♦ 10 6 3 ♦ K ♣ Q 8 7 4 3 ♣ 9 ♠ K Q J 4 2 ♥ 2 ♦ A K Q 9 7 ♣ A 10

This was worth only about 80 percent of the matchpoints, however, because a few pairs bid and made 6♦ – probably after a Michaels-ish sequence and a non-spade lead by West.

Here’s another deal where Jenni’s aggressive bidding earned us 100 percent of the matchpoints.

I held:♠A Q 8 5 ♥9 6 4 ♦9 7 3 *C *J 6 4.

My RHO opened 1NT (15–17) and LHO bid 2♥, transferring to spades. Partner doubled 2♥ for the lead (we were red versus white). The opponents quickly bid up to 4♠, and because I trust my partner more than the opponents, I decided to double this. She did take a red versus white call, after all!

West North East South Humphreys Carmichael 1NT Pass 2♥ Dbl 2♠ Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

I led a heart, like a good partner, and dummy is:

♠ J 10 9 6 4 ♥ Q 3 ♦ K 10 4 ♣ A 10 8 ♠ A Q 8 5 ♥ 9 6 4 ♦ 9 7 3 ♣ J 6 4

The heart lead went to partner’s jack and declarer’s ace. I found myself back on lead at trick two with a spade honor, and thinking that because partner can have only 7–8 points, and she doubled for the lead, she must have another suit headed by an honor. I knew I would be in again before declarer could pitch anything, so I shifted to a club, because partner’s hypothetical ♦A couldn’t go away, but her hypothetical ♣K could.

Sure enough, as you can see from the full deal, this is the only defense that defeats 4♠. I might not

love partner’s double of 2♥, but it sure did work on this hand.

(Jenni admits that her double was technically not a call she or anyone might ordinarily make. But it was late in the session and she was intoxicated by the 75 percent game she and Greg had going.)

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and

participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Picking your moment!By Barry Rigal

In third seat, you hold something like ♠5 3 ♥Q 3 2 ♦8 6 5 3 2 ♣8 5 3.

This is the auction:West North East South1♦ Dbl ?

How do you get in your opponents’ way?In the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams round

of 32 , Nick Jacob, playing with Sartaj Hans, experimented with a strength-showing redouble! When he heard 2♥ to his left, passed back to him, he decided he had done enough. These were the North-South hands: ♠ K Q J 2 ♥ J 7 4 ♦ K ♣ K Q 7 6 4

♠ 7 6 4 ♥ A K 10 5 ♦ J 10 4 ♣ A 8 2

If feels like 4♠ and 4♥ are both decent games. The point to remember is that after the redouble, many players (but not South in this case, apparently) play a jump as shapely but not a real invitation.

the world playing bridge in the future.Which are your favourite tournaments?MK: The NABCs. All the strongest players in

the world are here, so they are very challenging. What about your partnership with Piotr

Gawrys? How did you start playing together? Is the age difference a problem for you?

MK: In 2014, Piotr asked me to play with him and I enthusiastically accepted. Age difference is not a problem. I don’t care about my partner’s age.

The next World Bridge Games will be held in Wroclaw, your birthplace. Is this inspirational for you?

MK: For me it is important just like all the other championships, but it is true that, as many of my friends will come and root for us, it will probably be particularly exciting.

Have you ever had a moment of weakness in your bridge life?

MK: When I was 10 years old I was playing at the club with my dad. I had 10 top trumps and 11 top tricks, but I forgot to draw trumps and my father was furious. And I thought: “I don’t want to play bridge anymore, it destroys my family.” But then I overcame that feeling of failure and just tried again.

point, but Lavazza outscored their opponents 58-34 in the third quarter to take a 7-IMP lead then won the final set 30-15 to advance with a 147-125 victory.

Diamond led Rosenthal early but fell behind at the halfway point and never recovered, losing 116-79.

Two other matches were cut short when the losing teams withdrew. The Lian team, winners over the Zimmermann and Bart Bramley squads, lost the first set to Cayne 60-0 and, down 127-49, withdrew after three quarters. Lian was originally seeded 59th.

The Richard Schwartz team struggled from the outset against Bertheau, losing the first set 43-3 and scoring only 24 IMPs in 45 boards. Schwartz, facing a 141-24 deficit, withdrew after three sets.

Runners-up in the Silodor Open Pairs: John Kranyak and Phyllis Fireman.by 92 matchpoints on a 90 top.

Second place in the event went to Phyllis Fireman and John Kranyak.

“It’s good to win again,” said Meckstroth, who earned his 58th North American championship. Rodwell has 59. “We haven’t won a national event since Chicago (last summer) and that’s a long drought for us.”

After the first day of play, the twosome – among the most successful pairs in bridge history – were in sixth place, about 70 matchpoints out of first. In the first final session, they scored 66.11% to take the lead by about two-thirds of a board. They increased the margin with a 58.94% game in the second final session.

Women’s

They were second in the Women’s Pairs: Sheri Winestock and Shannon Cappelletti.

Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs. The top four pairs were bunched within a board when the bell sounded.

Gromova and Ponomareva, both from Moscow, compiled four solid sessions – 65%, 59.50%, 56% and 58% – and needed every point. Nipping at their heels, Shannon Cappelletti and Sheri Winestock were but 4.15 points (25 top) off the pace.

In third, 2.05 points behind the runners-up, were Ellen Kozlove of Boca Raton FL and Anne Brenner of Denver CO.

This is the second NABC title for Gromova and Ponomareva. They won this same event in 2012.

This is the first time Winestock has finished as high as second. She says she and Cappelletti are teaming up with the Russians (and Jan Assini and Joanne Weingold) to play the Machlin Women’s Swiss which starts today.

How to Work Acrostics PuzzlesThe grid of the puzzle below is not a

crossword; it’s a quotation from a bridge book, written by one of America’s finest woman players, who passed away in 2015. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing about acrostic puzzles is that the first

letter of each clue answer, reading down from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author … followed by the title of that book!

You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells the solver which of the clue answers will give you that particular letter.

Working in both directions … from the clues to the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) in solving acrostics. Just keep plugging away, back and forth, and BOTH puzzles … the quote and the clue answers … can be solved eventually.

Enjoy yourselves! Joel Hoersch

Exit hereBy Barry Rigal

This deal came from the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams round-of-16 match between the Bramley and Lian teams. Dlr: South ♠ Q 5 3 2 Vul: None ♥ K 7 4 2 ♦ 9 4 ♣ K J 4 ♠ J 10 9 ♠ K 8 7 6 ♥ A J 10 8 3 ♥ Q 9 6 ♦ Q 7 ♦ K 10 2 ♣ 10 6 5 ♣ Q 3 2 ♠ A 4 ♥ 5 ♦ A J 8 6 5 3 ♣ A 9 8 7 West North East South 1♦ 1♥ Dbl 2♦ 3♦ All Pass

Both tables in the match between the Bart Bramley and Ruo Yang Lian teams played in 3♦, but in one room East had simply raised to 2♥ and declarer misguessed the ♣Q to go down.

On the auction shown, Bramley led the ♠J to the queen, king and ace. The declarer, Poon Hua, led a heart up at trick two. Bramley won the ♥A and cashed the ♠10 and continued with the ♠9. Declarer ruffed and guessed well to lead the ♦A and another diamond. This was the position at that point: ♠ 5 ♥ K 7 4 ♦ — ♣ K J 4 ♠ — ♠ 8 ♥ J 10 8 3 ♥ Q 9 ♦ — ♦ K ♣ 10 6 5 ♣ Q 3 2 ♠ — ♥ — ♦ J 8 6 ♣ A 9 8 7

Bramley won and exited in hearts. Declarer won the ♥K, ruffed a heart, led a club to the king and ruffed dummy’s last heart East pitching his spade, before exiting in diamonds. In the two-card ending, East had to lead a club round to dummy’s jack for declarer’s ninth trick.

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

The Official Record – Part 1

ACBL’s formal disciplinary procedure at tournaments

By Christina Van Leeuwen

Many clubs and tournaments employ the ACBL’s Zero Tolerance Policy to deal with instances of unacceptable behavior. Unfortunately, there are sometimes incidents of a more serious nature or patterns of offensive behavior that must be addressed in a more severe manner.

All ACBL units and districts are required to have a recorder. A recorder’s responsibilities include receiving and investigating both reports of objectionable conduct and allegations of unethical behavior that occur within their jurisdiction. For example, a complaint regarding an incident that occurred during a sectional tournament should be sent to the sponsoring unit’s recorder.

There is also a national recorder, Sam Whitten, who is a full-time employee of the ACBL.

Incidents can be reported using a player memo, also known as a recorder form. You can obtain one of these forms from a tournament director, but any written complaint (including email) that is sent to the recorder will be accepted in lieu of an actual player memo. You may also complete the form online and submit it directly to the ACBL. The complaint should include your name and contact information, the name of your partner, the

name of your opponents (noting if one or both are responsible for the incident in question), a complete description of what occurred and thorough documentation of the hand in question. Reporting any behavioral violation or questionable bridge action during a tournament should always go to a TD first. The TD will ensure that the complaint reaches the appropriate parties, including the recorder.

Once a recorder has received a complaint, he will investigate the complaint by talking to the individuals involved and any witnesses that can be located. Then the recorder will make one of three determinations. If the complaint and subsequent investigation uncovers a violation that the recorder believes is serious enough to bring before a disciplinary committee, he will present the

complaint to the unit or district president, who will become the charging party and will ask the unit or district disciplinary chair to convene a disciplinary committee to hold a hearing. This process and the procedures followed by the disciplinary committee are outlined in the ACBL Code of Disciplinary Regulations (CDR).

If, after completing the investigation, the recorder is unconvinced that the complaint warrants a disciplinary committee but feels the incident is still troubling, he will keep this complaint on file and forward a copy

to the National Recorder’s office. This complaint may then be used in a future disciplinary case as part of a pattern of behavior demonstrated by the subject. This is known as recording the complaint.

Lastly, if the recorder does not feel that a violation has taken place, he can choose not to record the incident and the complaint will go no further. While recorder complaints and investigations are confidential, the recorder will notify the parties involved which of these three actions he has taken with the complaint.

Complaints fall into one of two general categories: behavioral and bridge. Behavioral complaints are fairly self-explanatory, and the recorder must simply decide if the behavior warrants a disciplinary committee or if it should simply be recorded in the event that more such complaints are presented about the same individual in the future.

Bridge complaints should include as much detail about the deal as possible, including the exact hands (hand records are very useful for this purpose). One should also include the bidding, the opening lead and, when relevant, the play of the hand. Recorders use these player memos documenting unusual action taken at the table to build cases against partnerships that are using covert methods to signal information to each other. Prearranged partnership collusion by means of signaling to exchange information is the most serious form of cheating that exists within bridge. While a single complaint is very rarely sufficient to prove such a case, a number of hands demonstrating unusual actions can bring a pattern to light. It will be up to an ethics committee to determine if this pattern proves cheating. It is important to keep in mind that public accusations of cheating are not tolerated. Unfortunately space-saving bids aren’t always as economical as might seem. When a player saves space for herself, she automatically saves it for her opponents too. On some deals the opponents can make more profitable use of this space than you can. Good shutout bidding aims to prevent this.

Answers to puzzle on page 17 Please be on your best behavior.

The ACBL wants you to know that Zero Tolerance is in effect at this tournament.

You are expected to treat your partner and opponents with respect and a friendly demeanor. As the ZT policy dictates, rude behavior will not be tolerated.

If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the director should be called immediately. The director may assess an immediate ¼ board disciplinary penalty (3 IMPs in team games). If both members of a partnership are guilty, the penalties are additive (¼ board per player = ½ board). A second offense in the same event may result in ejection.

The ultimate purpose of the ZT policy is to create a much more pleasant atmosphere in our NABCs and a more enjoyable bridge experience for everyone.

Please be scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.
