About the Grand National Teams, Championship and Flight AThe Grand National Teams is a North American

contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating. In 1985, the event was subdivided into three separate

events: Flights A, B and C. Another change came in 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight (for players with more than 5000 masterpoints) was created. Effective 2014, Flight A changed from being capped at 5000 masterpoints to having an upper limit of 6000.

The winners of the Championship Flight are honored by the Morehead Trophy, donated by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge editor, Albert H. Morehead. The winners of Flight A are honored by the Goldman Trophy, named in honor of the late Bobby Goldman.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909–1966) was born in Flintstone GA and

educated at Baylor and Harvard. Ely Culbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstanding ability as a player and analyst and made him technical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was made general manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25 when he played on the Culbertson team that defeated the British in the second international match for the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The New York Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and a daily column from 1959. He resigned from the Times late in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing and publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses that made him one of the foremost American lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tremendous service to organized bridge. He was an officer of the United States Bridge Association when that organization amalgamated with the American Bridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairman of the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National Laws Commission and was in charge of production of the International Laws of Contract Bridge. He was also the author of the constitution of the World Bridge Federation — the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bobby GoldmanBobby Goldman (1938–1999), who became a member

of the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, enjoyed a stellar career as a player, author and theorist. His tournament record is impressive. He earned four world titles (the Bermuda Bowl in 1970, 1971 and 1979 and the World Mixed Teams in 1972) and 19 North American championships: the Life Master Men’s Pairs (1964); the Life Master Pairs (1968); the Open BAM Teams (1993); the Men’s Teams (1968, 1989 and 1991); the Spingold Knockout Teams (1969, 1978, 1983, 1986 and 1988); the Reisinger BAM Teams (1970, 1976 and 1980); the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1971, 1973, 1978, 1997 and 1998). Goldman also had 13 second-place finishes in NABC events.

At the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Goldman was an ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 25,700 masterpoints, and ranked ninth on the all-time list of masterpoint holders. He was also a WBF World Grand Master.

Goldman authored several books on the game, including “Aces Scientific” and “Winners and Losers at the Bridge Table.” His contributions to bidding theory include Super Gerber, Exclusion Blackwood and Goldman after Stayman. He was one of the principal architects of the Aces Scientific System.

Goldman served as ACBL recorder from 1986–1988 and was a longtime member of the Competitions and Conventions Committee. His views on the game helped shape the modern-day Alert procedure, the ACBL convention chart, ethics and the appeals process.

Goldman was honored by the ACBL by being named

the 1999 Honorary Member, presented for long and meritorious service to bridge.

Goldman’s early career was distinguished by his association with the Aces, the professional, Texas-based team created by businessman Ira Corn for the purpose of winning world bridge championships. Goldman was a member of the successful squad until 1974.

About Grand National Teams, Flights B and CQualifications for teams participating in the Grand

National Teams Flights B and C were earned in local-level events earlier this year. Flight B is 0–2500 masterpoints and Flight C is non-Life Masters up to 500 masterpoints.

Flight B winners are honored by the Sheinwold Trophy while the names of Flight C winners are honored by the Mac Nab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold (1912–1997) was one of the greatest

bridge writers in the history of the game. He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered by many to be the best. He had a knack for getting his point across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and know in an instant that nobody else could have written it,” said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He enlightened and entertained players through seven decades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge World from 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of perhaps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of the appeals committees at NABCs and as chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab (1915–1985) served as

a member of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to 1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a past president of the Western Conference, a member of the

ACBL Laws Commission and a member of the executive council of the World Bridge Federation.

Keep it CleanMost of us are honest and want to play the game properly. When you play against an opponent you suspect is not playing in accordance with the Laws, or violating the Code of Disciplinary Regulations, please file a Player Memo. There is a version streamlined for online play reports available at www.acbl.org/bbomemo/. You may privately text your director as well, but making a public accusation is itself a violation of the CDR, so please report suspicious conduct in an actively ethical way!

“I’ve volunteered to be one of the investigators when there is suspicion of Unauthorized Information during online play. There are a lot of factors to consider, not least of which is the suspected player’s experience level.

Accusations of cheating are a serious matter. Anyone can do something strange on one deal; but when a pattern emerges, there is smoke. Where there is smoke, there is often fire. For charges to be filed, more than one investigator has to come to the same conclusion.

The game will be better and more popular if we all behave ethically.

Big Brother is watching you.” – Larry Cohen

Online Bridge: Different Mechanics, Same LawsBy Robb Gordon, ACBL National Recorder

When we play online, we are still playing bridge. The Laws of Duplicate Bridge and ACBL Regulations still apply. But facing facts, some things are different. Here are a few:

1. Revoking and leading out of turn are impossible.

2. You must self-Alert.

3. Because you are Alerting only the opponents, and asking questions only of one or both opponents, partner does not “hear” your explanations or questions and that avenue of Unauthorized Information has been eliminated. This saves a lot of arguments and bad feelings.

4. Breaks in tempo are awkward. At the table, if somebody takes a lot of time, you can see that they (presumably) are thinking. In online bridge, it could mean that their tea kettle started whistling and they went to turn off the burner. Law 73E2:

If the Director determines that an innocent player has drawn a false inference from a question, remark, manner, tempo or the like, of an opponent who has no demonstrable bridge reason for the action, and who could have been aware, at the time of the action, that it could work to his benefit, the Director shall award an adjusted score.

This rule applies. When you spill coffee or are distracted by a phone call, it is incumbent on you to make sure the opponents know so they are not deceived by your inattention.

5. The ACBL has long had a rule that partnerships have

two identical convention cards with their names on them. The convention card rules apply to BBO as well, except you need have only one card. To make a convention card, log in. Click Account on the right tabbed menu and select the Convention Cards heading. It is pretty easy to recall a saved card or to complete and save a new one. Remember to load your card by completing the Use With Partner blank with your partner’s BBO name.

6. The ACBL Convention Charts apply here. Make sure your convention is permitted in the game you are playing. For example, a 2♦ opening that shows a weak hand with length in one of the majors is an Open+ Chart convention and is not permitted in any event in the online regional.

7. It has come to our attention that some players have more than one BBO user ID. Please only use one ID when playing in ACBL games with human opponents. We are screening for this.

8. Because you are playing in an ACBL game against human opponents, we encourage you to make sure your profile displays your real name.

BBO Help Desk – Convention Cards Convention cards disclose your partnership’s agreements to the opponents in accordance with the rules of bridge. The

ACBL requires that you and your partner make a completed convention card available. Your full names – first and last – should appear at the top. When you sit down to play or register for a tournament with a partner, BBO will see if your partnership has a convention card on file by looking at your list of Personal Cards for your partner’s username. If it is there, you will be notified and the appropriate card is loaded once play starts. If your opponents follow this procedure, you’ll be able to view their cards as well.

After logging in, click on the Account tab along the right edge. Your profile will open as shown at right.

Click on Convention cards. The Convention cards section will open.

To fill out a new card, click on New ACBL Convention Card. If you don’t want to start from a blank card, you can also select one of the Stock Cards.

A blank convention card will appear. Widen the window by dragging the divider to the left. Click each blank line to place your cursor, then enter the appropriate information.

Continue filling in the card until it is complete. When the card is complete, click the “Save changes” button at top left.

To view or edit a card after it is filled out, select it from the list of Personal Cards at the bottom of the Convention cards section.

A prompt will ask you what you want to do with the card. Select view or edit as appropriate. In order for the card to be visible to your opponents, you must designate a partner. Enter your partner’s BBO name as shown and click “Use with partner.”

When you want to view an opponent’s convention card during a game, start by clicking on the three bars.

If the opponents have loaded their convention card, it will appear as a choice in this menu. Select NS Convention Card or EW Convention Card. The card will pop up in another window.
