I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) is on the verge of matching the record held by champion sires Danehill (Danzig) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and

the rags-to-riches stallion could also bring up his maiden Group 1 two-year-old winner should one of his juveniles win today’s Inglis’ Sires (registered as Sires’ Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m).

Yarraman Park Stud’s brilliant sire I Am

Should the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Strasbourg ($26) cause an upset, the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale graduate will also see I Am Invincible reach 26 individual stakes winners this season.

That figure is the same as the record held by Danehill (2001-02) and equaled by his Arrowfield Stud-based champion grandson Snitzel 15 years later in 2016-17.

Strasbourg, who won impressively at his first start in the Max Lees Classic (900m) last December at Newcastle, is backing up in the Sires’ after finishing runner-up to the re-opposing Bellevue Hill (Pierro) ($7.50) in last week’s Schweppervescence (registered as T L Bailleu Stakes) (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill.

The potential Group 1 breakthrough for I Am Invincible comes on the eve of next week’s

Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where he has 31 of the 450 lots catalogued for the blue riband auction.

“He has proven to be a very versatile stallion. He gets very good two-year-olds but he also gets horses who train on,” Yarraman Park Stud’s Harry Mitchell said from Inglis’ Riverside Stables yesterday.

“That is his beauty - they are not just two-year-olds. But he is the leading sire of two-year-old winners and two-year-old stakes winners this year.

“To tick that box off on the big ones (would be fantastic). Oohood went very close last year, Loving Gaby didn’t get a lot of luck in the Blue Diamond but you have got to get over the line first.

“We are looking forward to the Sires’ and hoping he can do it.”Even if Strasbourg does not win the $1 million race Mitchell is quietly confident that I Am

Invincible, whose service fee is set to increase from $192,500 (inc GST) this year, can match and even set a new benchmark before the season ends on July 31.

“We have only got one more stakes winner to go and that will equal Snitzel

and Danehill’s record of stakes winners in a year at 26. He has got 25 at the moment,” he said.

“There are a lot of stakes races in Adelaide and Brisbane to come, so in all probability, he is going to break Danehill and Snitzel’s record, which is something we would be incredibly proud about because it is a fair achievement for a horse who started from humble beginnings.”

That’s a success rate of 95%.

I Am Invincible’s current crop of yearlings were conceived on a $55,000 (inc GST) service fee before his racecourse success and sales ring popularity demanded his price be increased in both 2017 and 2018.

Some of the rising 15-year-old stallion’s best yearlings from his 2017-born crop will be on offer at Riverside Stables and Mitchell believes I Am Invincible can continue his remarkable ascension up the leading sires’ table.

“There are some very nice I Am Invincibles here and for a horse who has already thrown 25 stakes winners this year, he is going to be in hot demand,” he said.

“When you are breeding out of outstanding mares, maybe the horses have slightly better actions.

“He is an upgrader, he can throw a great type out of an average mare, but for any stallion I think it helps when you are covering A grade mares which he is now.

“The mares he has got this year is incredible.”As for Mitchell’s confidence about either Loving Gaby or Strasbourg

winning the Sires’ today, a drying surface at Randwick would increase his optimism. It was yesterday rated as a Soft 7 after escaping the majority of the rain that fell around Sydney.

“We are looking forward to Loving Gaby or Strasbourg running well tomorrow. I am a bit worried about the wet track,” he said.

“We just hope the rain stops. I don’t think they are as effective on heavy ground myself.”

Sunlight likely for TJ SmithHaving walked the Randwick track yesterday, Tony McEvoy is leaning towards running three-time Group 1 winner Sunlight (Zoustar) in the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick today. McEvoy walked the Randwick track late on Friday morning and although he was getting a fair soaking, the ground was still firm enough for the filly to take her place in the lucrative sprint. "She'll take her place unless there's a deluge overnight," McEvoy told Racing.com. "Hopefully it will be a (rating of ) seven, with some luck a six, but hopefully a seven at worst. There is a forecast for some rain

in the morning and that might ultimately determine what happens but, at the moment, I think it would be a seven or an eight and if no rain came, it could be a six.”

Snowdens launchthree-pronged Sires’ raidThe Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) has been a happy hunting ground for Peter and Paul Snowden and they are hoping their luck continues when they field three runners in today’s $1 million race. The Snowdens, who have won four of the past eight editions of the two-year-old feature, will be represented by Strasbourg (I Am Invincible), Bullet Fly (Deep Field) and possibly Rome (Pierro), although he is likely to be scratched if the track is heavy.

“He’s quite a gross horse and the back-up will do him the world of good,” Snowden said of Strasbourg, who was second in a Rosehill Group 3 last week. “He’s had a bit of a tag on him all the way through, he just needs to justify that.”

King looking forwardto So Si Bon

Less than two-and-a-half years after having his first race ride, Victorian apprentice Lachlan King has the opportunity at racing's elite level on one of the country's biggest race days. King, 20, has his first ride in a Group 1 race in today’s $3 million Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on the Lindsay Park-trained So Si Bon (So You Think). "Obviously these opportunities don't come around often for apprentices who are still claiming two kilos in the city, certainly not for trainers of the status of Lindsay Park," King said. "But also just to be able to get a ride on a live chance in the race was a good feeling and I'm really looking forward to the challenge.”

El Dorado Dreamingout of DoncasterEl Dorado Dreaming (Ilovethiscity) has been scratched from the Doncaster Mile with the filly reportedly suffering from a respiratory infection. Trainer Kris Lees has been monitoring the 2018 Sires' Produce Stakes winner this week but El Dorado Dreaming will not run on Saturday and will also be withdrawn from the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) a week later on account of veterinary advice. Stablemate Graff (Star Witness) has been withdrawn from the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 12000m) on April 13, while Lees was also forced to withdraw Frankely Awesome (Frankel) from today’s Australian

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) but the trainer expects her to be able to contest the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) next week.

Violate to run in the Doncaster MileDue to El Dorado Dreaming’s defection in today’s Doncaster Mile, the Brent Stanley-trained Violate (Sebring) will now line up in the race. "He got up there this morning," Stanley said. "We took the punt on him getting a run and worst case scenario he was going to run either up there in a couple of weeks or in Queensland. He doesn't mind the soft, he just can't go if it's a bog. Where he's drawn is OK as he doesn't go inside horses, we know that.”

Zahra chasing a second Australian DerbyA year after winning a thrilling Australian Derby on Levendi (Pierro), Mark Zahra believes he has a genuine chance to go back-to-back in the Classic at Randwick aboard the Anthony Freedman-trained Declarationofheart (Declaration of War). Declarationofheart finished second to fellow Derby contender Global Exchange (Dundeel) in the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at The Valley at his last start. “He won really well at Sandown one day last preparation and then just struggled to put another win on the board,” Zahra said. "But I thought his run was good the other day in the blinkers and I got a bit more confidence out of that trial the other day.”

Berry on Madison CountyTommy Berry will keep his association with Madison County (Pins) in today’s Australian Derby at Randwick. Berry was taken by the gelding's first-up fourth behind The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and places the blame on pilot error for his defeat in last weekend's Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m), where he finished

runner-up. "It was a terrific run first-up as he had missed some work due to an aborted sale to Hong Kong, and the track that day was quite testing," Berry said. "He ran some lovely closing sectionals, even slightly faster than The Autumn Sun, so I was delighted as it was my first ride on him and it was great to get a feel for what he is capable of.”

Moroney pair wellfancied in DerbyMike Moroney is in a strong position going into the Australian Derby at Randwick with the two favoured runners in Arrogant (Ocean Park) and Chapada (Bullet Train). Both were impressive last start in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), with Arrogant pushing The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) all the way to the wire, while Chapada ran on for third. “The good thing about both of my horses is that they can run the distance and also handle wet tracks,” Moroney said. "We put earmuffs on Arrogant when he worked with Chapada on Saturday morning and he was quite happy to lob alongside with him, so we just thought he'd do the same on Tuesday but obviously, out on the course proper, there was a bit too much to look at.”

Bowman looking forwardto Godolphin ridesHugh Bowman will ride for Godolphin in three Group 1 races on the opening day of The Championships at Randwick, teaming up with Godolphin warhorse Hartnell (Authorized) in the Doncaster Mile, Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) in the TJ Smith Stakes and Microphone (Exceed And Excel) in the Inglis Sires’. It is an outstanding book of feature race rides and Bowman concedes his four Group 1 mounts all shape as genuine chances. “I’m not expecting to come home with all four but if things go our way, they all could win,” Bowman said. “There’s none that are making the numbers up, they’re all really good rides.”

Maher with two chances in Anniversary Vase

Ciaron Maher has opted to apply gear changes to both his Anniversary Vase (Listed, 1400m) contenders and is hoping the move pays off with improved performances by Naantali (Rip Van Winkle) and Kemono (Kinshasa No Kiseki) in the Caulfield race today. "Naantali has been a really consistent mare," Maher said. "We've put a Norton bit on for Saturday. She just does a bit much mid-race and it probably just takes the shine off her finish. Kemono is a good horse and he's in good order He's up to 1400 (metres) and we've taken the blinkers off. He over-did it in the blinkers last start but was good fresh over 1200 at Flemington. Over 1400 at Caulfield he should improve."

Dee eyeing stakessuccess at RandwickMichael Dee is confident he can win the Anniversary Vase on Heptagon (Jimmy Choux) at Caulfield this afternoon. Heptagon started from gate one, stalked the pace and pounced when winning the $100,000 Echuca Cup (1400m) at his latest start on March 10. "We just sat behind them that day and he sprinted really well to the line," Dee told Racing.com. "Hopefully he is fresh enough to do that on Saturday. Looking at barriers it looks ideal drawing barrier six so hopefully we can end up midfield with a bit of cover and that'd be perfect." Waller trio on trial for OaksChris Waller already has the short-priced ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) favourite Verry Elleegant (Zed) but could strengthen his representation in the fillies’ Classic depending on the performances of Zalatte (Medaglia D’Oro), Romani Girl (Reliable Man) and Welsh

Legend (Camelot) in today’s Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick. "All three of our runners would progress through to the Oaks if they run well, if not we would split them up and send some to Adelaide and some to Brisbane for their Oaks a little later in the season," Waller said.

Dunn hoping forinterstate successMatt Dunn has his eye on feature races in two states today with Sovereign Nation (Encosta De Lago) to run in the Weetwood Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Toowoomba and two stablemates to compete at Randwick. La Scopa (Show A Heart) will tackle the $500,000 Country Championship Final (1400m) while the trainer has a big opinion of Rocknavar (Fastnet Rock), who jumps in class for the Adrian Knox Stakes. "She has drawn barrier 17 and I don't really know what that will mean on a wet track. But I have got Jason Collet to ride her and he is in great form," Dunn said of Rocknavar. "Her trial was very good when second at Rosehill recently. I don't think she will disgrace us."

Magnapal gearing towards Warrnambool CupRising ten-year-old Magnapal (Magnus) runs in today’s Le Pine Funerals Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield en route to either the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) on April 20 or the following day's Stawell Cup (2000m). The Daniel Bowman-trained gelding will then press on to his principal target - the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) on May 2. Bowman said: "He'll need a bit of luck from the barrier but if he can find himself in the first five in the run hopefully he'll be thereabouts."

Rondinella could stillrun in Sydney CupNew Zealand co-trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood have not completely ruled out a Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) start for Rondinella (Ocean Park) after her third in the HE Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at her last start. James said they would wait until after the weekend's racing to make a decision. "It was the intention that she came straight home, but the owners were keen to leave her there for a week to assess the situation and make a decision," James said.

“It is a consideration at this stage (Sydney Cup) and we will make a final decision after the weekend. Two miles (3200m) is a specialist race and you don’t know until you try.”

Another charge fortrainer Ben CurrieBen Currie will now face 42 separate allegations after stewards issued him with a further prohibited substance charge. The charge came yesterday on the eve of the Toowoomba Weetwood meeting where Currie will have up to 20 runners. Stewards will allege Currie brought Eight Over (Lonhro) to race at Toowoomba on February 2 with prohibited substances in its system. The charge will be heard with the other four similar alleged offences. None of the charges have been resolved.

Stewards scratchThompson runnersRacing Victoria stewards yesterday scratched two Jody Thompson-trained horses set to race at Benalla after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) upheld a three-month disqualification handed down last year. Thompson, who had Double Dink (Captain Gerrard) and Saracential (Dangerous) accepted for the Benalla meeting, had failed in her appeal against the disqualification for failing to provide adequate care to a horse. VCAT announced its decision yesterday morning, prompting the stewards’ decision to scratch her runners. Thompson’s penalty starts on April 13 but is not permitted to have a runner before then.

Six-month suspensionfor QuadaraSeymour trainer Michael Quadara has been banned for six months for riding a horse towards an oncoming horse and rider last December. The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RAD) penalised Quadara after finding him guilty of the charge that related to improper and misconduct. Quadara was found to have ridden his horse towards another horse (Deck Of Cards) ridden by Don Dwyer, forcing Dwyer to take evasive action, on December 1. Quadara had pleaded not guilty but the RAD Board imposed the penalty which starts tomorrow. Quadara is not allowed to enter or attend the Seymour racecourse during his suspension.

Smith and Warwick bid for Warrnambool stableProminent Perth trainers Lindsey Smith and Justin Warwick are set to apply for Victorian trainers’ licences so the pair can lease the Warrnambool stable complex previously owned by Darren Weir. The 43-box complex was recently sold to a Victorian investor following Weir’s four-year disqualification with Smith and Warwick signalling their intention to open a Victorian base at Warrnambool should they be granted permission by Racing Victoria. Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean, who is fighting charges including possessing a ‘jigger’, had his application to take over the complex rejected by RV last month.

Racing NSW releasestrategic planRacing NSW have released their strategic plan, taking effect as of April 2019. The challenges that the body are looking to address include the reduction in field sizes in Metropolitan and Provincial sectors, the increasing cost to own a horse, keeping NSW Country Thoroughbred Racing viable and vibrant, trainers’ viability and cashflow, public perception of horse welfare, Improving racecourse infrastructure and continuing racing’s growth – developing new customers and engaging with younger generations. Winkle) was another length and a half away in third. A $43,000 purchase from the Book 2 session of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in 2016, Fiscal Fantasy has won four of her 18 starts for prize-money earnings of NZ$120,265. She joins Pecans as Skilled’s two stakes winners. The stallion stands at Riverbank Farm at Benalla and stood for a fee of $3,300 (inc GST) in 2018.

Gutsy Group 3 winfor Fiscal FantasyFrank Ritchie was apprehensive about the pint-sized mare Fiscal Fantasy’s chances when she drew barrier 12 for the Manawatu Breeders Stakes but the trainer was delighted with the way the mare overcame the obstacle to land an important Group 3 win. “When we got the wide draw I thought ‘not again’, because she has been beaten by wide draws so many times. As the day went on it didn’t look quite so bad,” Ritchie said. “She is a real sweetheart. She has got a heart much bigger than herself, because she’s tiny. She never gives it away.” Fiscal Fantasy could now head to the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa later this month. Vale Trevor McKeeTrevor McKee, best-known as the trainer of champion mare Sunline (Desert Sun), has died aged 81. Tributes flowed yesterday for the former trainer, who died after a battle with illness. He had prepared Sunline to win 32 of her 48 starts including two Cox Plates (Gr 1, 2040m), in partnership with his son Stephen, but was also known as a trader of horses. "Selling horses was just the way it had to be at that stage," McKee told reporters in 2006. "To make a living you had to end up selling them off. Most of them were sold as two-year-olds and therefore you often had very few decent ones coming through. It was a case of how I survived. There wasn't enough

in training fees when you had a wife and three kids." McKee retired from training in 2006, but continued to help Stephen and was a regular fixture at racecourses throughout New Zealand until suffering a stroke last year. McKee is survived by wife Noeleen and children Suzanne, Stephen and Donna.

Gallant Boy in good shapeAge is not against eight-year-old Gallant Boy (Gallant Guru) who is poised to make it back-to-back stakes wins in today’s Easter Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Riccarton. Trainers Brian and Shane Anderton have freshened up Gallant Boy after his White Robe Lodge Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) victory at Wingatui in February. “It was a great run (last start),” Brian Anderton said. “He’s won ten races now, so he is a real honest type of horse. He’s well, he has freshened up nicely and we intend to run him again at Christchurch the following week in the mile and a quarter (Canterbury Gold Cup).”

Perth jockey Azzopardi to ride in SingaporePerth jockey Joe Azzopardi was set to have his first rides in Singapore last night as he starts a three-month contract. Azzopardi, 24, believes the time was right to try his hand competing at Kranji. “I’ve been in the top five in Perth, it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but Perth will never change and will always be there when I get back,” said Azzopardi, who had his last Perth meeting on Saturday. “All the trainers and owners said they would be happy to have me back. They actually told me I would be silly not to have a go. I’ve always wanted to ride overseas and it’s a great opportunity to get a licence in Singapore. I hope to do well here, and regardless of what happens, I will take away a lot from my time here.”

Ryan McEvoy,Widden Stud

The interest has been great. We’ve had really solid inspections for the last couple of days

in particular and I think there is a really good

feeling around the place. There are a lot of positive comments about the general quality on the ground so everything points towards it being another strong Easter Sale. I am extremely confident about the sale. Obviously the number of horses in the catalogue has been condensed and that points towards quality over quantity and that can only be positive for both buyers and vendors. With this in mind you would have to think there will be good competition on the yearlings that are here. Zoustar looks like he’ll make into a phenomenal stallion. Any horse that can sire the trifecta of the Coolmore Stakes with their first crop. If that is not an indication that this is a stallion with huge influence -

be a good one. With the catalogue being slightly smaller this year, you definitely don’t have the hurried trainers and vets running from here to there, wondering what they have missed off. Everyone can get themselves organised before the sale begins on Tuesday. You know the cream of the crop is here at Easter, but I hope that many of those trainers, who get scared away by the average last year, will still show up and look at the medians and realise there are some horses that can be bought for good prices. We sold some lovely horses last year, from $150,000 to $200,000 as well. We have a couple of standouts in the draft. The Sebring colt, who is out of a sister to Brazen Beau (Lot 233) - he is a very nice uncomplicated colt, very straightforward. The Headway - Vancouver (Lot 42) colt has a good bone, good substance and once again is very straightforward - I like him a lot. We have had good feedback on the So You Think - Forever Rafter (Lot 17) filly - she is just so much like her father. She has quality and class and you just want to throw your leg over it right away.

Treen Murphy,Sledmere StudInspections have been very consistent and our numbers have been very good in comparison to last year - we basically haven’t stopped all day and the rain didn’t even seem to make a difference with people looking at our draft. There is such a good vibe around the place - I think it is going to be an exciting sale and we are going to see some very good results. With the smaller catalogue this year, it does feel slightly more relaxed and we are certainly not under that much pressure to get inspections done because they have less horses to look at. We had the same number of people come up to look at the yearlings on the farm, before the sale. While there are less yearlings, I feel like the quality is very, very high this year.

this is a horse who will be a breed-shaper and yearling sale results this year indicate that. We have seen a number of cracking yearlings by him here. He is such an exciting horse and we are privileged to have him. He is currently over in England covering his first book of mares and it’s so exciting to have him. Sebring was a fabulous stallion, he was a consistent stallion and he does an almighty job of giving the buyer a fantastic race success and I think he will make a fantastic broodmare sire. There are some lovely fillies here in particular. We have Lot 59, who is lovely filly out of Intimate Moment - a Group winning daughter of Dubawi and we don’t have many of those in Australia. When you have a filly like that she has enormous potential as both a racehorse and then a broodmare.

Jo Griffin,Lime CountryThey have been as strong as last year and last year was a great sale. I feel like at the moment in Australia, every sale is going to

Randwick SPORTPIX

Three successive Saturdays of racing on significantly rain affected ground, in Sydney, should surely make matters routine as we almost

certainly will be confronted by another today. However the difference between Rosehill

and Randwick is greater than geographic and the evidence of just two years ago, when Sydney’s autumn rains ensured exactly the same circumstance of track conditions, is cautionary.

Then, of the 15 Rosehill mud winners in March who progressed directly to either Championships day at Randwick just four won

again and that tally - of course - includes one lay down misere in Winx. The others were Jon Snow (Derby), Big Duke (Chairmans) and It’s Somewhat (Doncaster).

Two other Rosehill winners (Derryn and The Mission), it should be noted, did win at Randwick on day two after failing on day one but there is certainly enough evidence to say that we cannot blithely expect the Rosehill winning form to necessarily hold up across the board.

Five of the ten winners on Derby day in 2017, just to further complicate matters, had not previously won on heavy ground while another had not raced under such conditions.

Much interest will centre on whether this year’s Golden Slipper form stands up in the

Inglis Sires’ (registered as: Sires’ Produce Stakes) as the winner Kiamichi impressed; the runner-up Microphone was typically honest and fourth placed Loving Gaby an eye-catcher. That form line also demands the inclusion of the maiden Crystal Eyes who was runner-up to Kiamichi in the Magic Night and, probably, Probabeel.

Fifteen Golden Slipper winners, in the past 30 years, have contested the Sires’ and six have completed the double including the fillies Merlene and Burst but it’s not been often attempted of late.

Pierro, in 2012, was the last horse to claim both races. Since then, Overreach is the only other Slipper winner to have competed in the

Sires’ and she finished third. Seventeen Sires’ winners have come through the Slipper, in the past 30 years, and 13 of them had finished first or second in the Rosehill race.

Kiamihci, a $7 chance at last look, looks over the odds for a very good Slipper winner and I’d be happy to play this form with trifectas 2, 10, 11, 12 and 14 (assuming the tack is a Soft 7 or worse).

The Derby looks a race of numerous possibilities but Angel Of Truth and Madison County were both outstanding in last week’s Tulloch Stakes (from which the past two Derby winners have progressed) and represent value at double figure odds. Chapada was a better Derby trial than his stablemate Arrogant in the Rosehill Guineas, has since worked better and is a better price which is somewhat surprising.

The Victorians Global Exchange and Stars Of Carrum, especially the former who is untapped, add interest. Neither has established soft track credentials but, given the evidence of this day in 2017, that’s not necessarily a prerequisite to winning.

Osborne Bulls and Sunlight, contest the T.J. Smith Stakes, coming off exceptional last start performances in Victoria and the line through In Her Time says this is clearly not inferior to the Trapeze Artist, Santa Ana Lane, Pierata and Shoals form. The issue for Sunlight may be the outside draw with high speed inside her. The race should set up for Osborne Bulls and if you had to back one for your life then it would be, more likely, him.

Hartnell and Fundamentalist, at either end of the handicap, looks the value plays in the Doncaster Mile. William Buick hasn’t done much wrong anywhere around the world of late but it was not his finest moment aboard Hartnell in the All-Star Mile. The old boy is “flying” and should have stretched Mystic Journey on that occasion.

Fundamentalist did stretch The Autumn Sun in the Randwick Guineas and she can run a mighty race, with 49 kg, given the prospect of a box seat trail - from gate two - behind likely leaders Brutal and Siege Of Quebec.

If it’s established that drawing wide is no

disadvantage by race ten then I could happily spec the former kiwi My Xpression, now with Chris Waller, at around 20/1. She’s yet to miss a place in seven starts and, critically, ran Avantage to a nose in the Gr 3 Gold Trial (1200m) in New Zealand last September.

Avantage, who’s been beaten once in eight starts, appeared for the first time in Australia and for the first time since that race with My Xpression when an impressive winner of the Group 3 Birthday Card on March 23. There, she beat Resin whose form ties in with Winter Bride and Spright and therefore Sunlight.

How do you feel your 2019 draft compares to your 2018 draft? We are presenting a slightly smaller draft than last year, but certainly

not lacking in quality, with all the hot sires represented - Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and our own exciting first-season sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor).

Of your colts which is / are your standout / standouts?

It’s hard to go past our I Am Invincible colt from Your Life Style (Hussonet) (Lot 339) - he is such a lovely, athletic colt with a great attitude, with such good looks and from the great family of Redoute’s Choice. We expect him to be well inspected. Speaking of Redoute’s Choice, we have a cracking colt out of Group 1 winner Shamal Win (Dubawi) (Lot 225) - he is a neat, short-coupled racy type and we expect he will be on everyone’s list.

Of your fillies which is / are your standout / standouts?

Our Medaglia d’Oro filly out of Flame Of Sydney (Encosta De Lago) (Lot 14) certainly has the pedigree and looks to match. She is a half-sister to the 2016 Co-Champion 2YO Colt in Australia in Invader (Snitzel), and Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas), who we all know did so well in Hong Kong. This filly would be a great addition to anyone’s foundation broodmare band in time. Our Deep Field filly out of Golconda (Snitzel) (Lot 30) is a cracking

type also, the first foal out of a two-year-old Listed winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare, she exudes speed matched with Deep Field, who has had a great start at stud - she shouldn’t be ignored.

Which lot do you think has improved mostsince the beginning of the prep?

Well, to be honest they have all jumped out of the ground. We keep all our yearlings out as much as we can during prep to help grow and develop athletes and we believe that this format has certainly worked for us again this year.

How do you think the sale statistics willcompare to the 2018 renewal?

I think it will be comparable to last year, another great catalogue this year, and I expect there will be plenty of demand for the right types.

Who do you think will be the leading sire at the sale?

Most likely Snitzel or I Am Invincible in my opinion, they are well represented and I expect the results will show accordingly

For anyone visiting Sydney for the first time, which restaurant would you recommend and what should they order?

If you are staying in the Liverpool area, you can't go wrong at “The Iron Chef”- order it all, its great.

Saturday, April 6, 2019 | 16 |Singapore News

Even if the one-way traffic scripted by most did not eventuate, hot favourite Australian-bred Bold Thruster (Turffontein) still oozed

class in the way he got the job done in the S$175,000 JBBA Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint (Listed, 1200m) on Friday night.

Regarded as the best three-year-old in this year’s captivating renewal of the first Leg of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge, the Shane Baertschiger-trained son of Turffontein (Johannesburg) had been ticking all the right boxes heading towards his racing comeback since his last start in the Saas Fee Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in November.

The 12 opponents pitted against him were no slouch, but on the strength of his four crushing wins from last year, he was by far the one punters were throwing their hard-earned on.

At the 200 metres, they probably were looking forward to their next month’s pay. Bold Thruster (John Powell) had kicked clear at the top of the straight after showing the way from barrier one, but softened up by a very sticky Lim’s Dream (Duporth) (Callan Murray) from the start, the $8 hotpot was to fans’ shock falling prey to the staggers.

Smart filly Siam Vipasiri (Bernardini) (Glen Boss), the one touted as his most likely nemesis should he falter, was living up to the tag as she weaved her way through the pack, all poised to deal a sucker punch.

But trainer Michael Clements had another horse, Top Knight (Zoustar) (Vlad Duric), who seemed to have the greater momentum as he was seen steamrolling home at the rate of knots on the outside.

For a second the red, Bold Thruster’s Tivic Stable colours, half of Kranji reached a standstill as they watched their hero clinging on desperately for dear life in a blanket finish, but the winning post came on time as Bold Thruster was semaphored as the winner by a short head from Top Knight.

Siam Vipasiri was game in defeat, finishing third another head away. Juvenile champion Lim’s Lightning (Saifudin Ismail) was not far off either in fourth place another length away while Siam Blue Vanda (Echoes Of Heaven) ran fifth another length and a quarter away.

The winning time was 1:9.65 for the 1200 metres on the Short Course.

Baertschiger was heaving a huge sigh of relief as he headed down to the winner’s stall.

Training the next superstar is always a heavy responsibility that is akin to a hiding to nothing, but on Friday, beads of sweat appeared even before they were sent on their way when the black gelding turned fractious in the gate, even dislodging Powell at the back, but was luckily brought to heel in the end.

“It was a big run. He was first-up, hasn’t raced for five months and had to carry 57kgs for the first time,” said the Australian handler.

“The other horse (Lim’s Dream) took him on and that was why he felt the pinch late. He will strip a lot fitter after this run, and the second Leg, here we come.”

The second Leg of the Challenge is the Singapore Three-Year-Old Classic (Listed, 1400m) which will run in four weeks’ time on May 3.

Powell echoed the same sentiments that the rising star will benefit greatly from that first springboard.

“That Lim’s Dream poured the pressure on him. We couldn’t get away from him,” said the Australian jockey.

“Don’t forget he was running against

@anz_news

Bold Thrusterscrapes home in Sprint

horses who were hard fit from having already had a few runs under the belt. Whereas for him, he had 57kgs on his back and he hasn’t raced for five months.

“He will improve after today. His race fitness wasn’t quite there today, but we will also have to fix his barrier manners.

“We also have to teach him to slow down. He goes too fast in his early sectionals.”

Duric for one wished Top Knight went a touch faster in his closing sectionals, even if with the naked eye, the son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) looked like he was finishing like a mail train.

“I thought I won. We were so far apart,” said the two-time Singapore champion jockey who still pulled in a nice haul of three winners (Vittoria Perfetta, Broadway Success and Clarton Palace) for the night.

“It was still a great run. The 1400 metre and 1600 metre Legs will suit him better.”

Bold Thruster (3 g Turffontein - Aelia Capitolina by Elusive City) has now brought his record to five wins and one second from seven starts for stakes earnings around the S$360,000 mark for the Tivic Stable. A $82,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale purchase from the 2017 renewal, is the only named foal out of the winning Elusive City (Elusive Quality) mare Aelia Capitolina. His second dam is the Listed winner Snaabelle (Snaadee) who produced five winners from seven foals to race.

Analysis: Fiscal Fantasy was rewarded with her maiden stakes win and fourth overall after some consistent recent form. With a circuit to run she sat three wide among the rear group but moved a lane closer to the rail upon entering the back straight. Past the 800m jockey Leith Innes sat patiently next to the fence yet remaining well back before easing out and making a forward move at the 600m. The field compacted near the turn in and she was wide but improving quickly, made a sustained run from the top of the straight, caught the leader at the 50m and was doing best at the line by a neck. Monrecor sat back in midfield at the 800m then accelerated three wide to be in behind the leaders turning in. With a solid run in the middle of the track she ranged up and took over at the 100m but had no answer to the winner. Lubaya was among the last three turning in and finished well but too late for third from Jessiegee, who took over the lead turning in, led to the 100m but was swamped

VERDICT Ballydoyle supply three of the six. BROOME (nap) boasts thebest credentials by virtue of second placings behind Madhmoon

at this venue and behind Royal Marine in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Guaranteedcould pose a significant threat, and the once-raced Tankerville should not be outof place at this level. [Alan Sweetman]
