Activities undertaken in the Human Resource Development Department, British Airways:
Understanding the organizational structure and functions of HRD Department, British Airways.
Understanding the profile of British Airways.
Analyzing the organizational behavior operating in the company.
Assessing the enactments applicable with respect to British Airways.
Conducting a study on welfare facilities provided to the employees and workmen of the company.
Conducting a study on the level of stress and Job Satisfaction and maintaining a balance in life.
The HRD department of British Airways has major role to play as it includes recruitment,
training, welfare, and final-settlement, maintenance of files and time office and industrial
relations of the company. The hierarchy and organizational environment of HRD department
was understood. Various aspects of industrial relations were analyzed, such as, trade unions
operating within the establishment.
We found out all the statutory and non-statutory welfare facilities, which included:
1. Subsidized cafeteria facilities for employees that provide good and hygienic food for the
employees.
2. Free and subsidized air passages for employees: The British Airways employees have
free and concession on domestic and international air passages soon after they
complete six months of permanent tenure in the company.
3. Transport Facilities: Staff Coaches are operating in different routes all over Delhi in order
to pick and drop staff working in different shifts.
4. Uniform: British Airways provides its employees with free uniforms.
5. Medical Benefits: Benefits under this scheme are admissible to all full time British
Airways employees.
An interaction was done with many employees in British Airways to understand the
organizational behavior in the company. The questions were asked about motivation and
motivational needs at work. Various other questions were asked about communication pattern,
group-dynamics, stress and conflict, goal attainment, and the environmental context of the
organization.
After elaborate discussions with the employees, we found that employees are treated fairly,
respecting their individual and collective rights. The direct communication and consultation is
promoted as a means of establishing honesty and respect. The equality of opportunity is
promoted and they encourage diversity in workforce. British Airways aim to achieve the highest
possible degree of employee satisfaction through encouragement, development, training and
recognition. They crave to maintain clear disciplinary and grievance procedures with access to
advice on fair and consistent application. They support the rights of the child and not employing
anyone under the age of 16 years. They are committed to ensuring dignity of work and mutual
respect which are enshrined in working practices as well as the way they behave toward each
other.
The various other assignments were undertaken like compilation of date concerning human
resources such as list of employees doing overtime, absenteeism among employees and
formulating organizational structure of the following departments of British Airways, Delhi:
Ground Services Department
Materials Management Department
In-flight Services Department
Medical Department
HRD Department
Security Department
Finance & Accounts Department
Department of Information & Technology
The structure and functioning of cargo department and British Airways commercial city office
was also understood. Overall, the training at British Airways has been learning, exploring and
experimenting.
